This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Geology, 1900, Vol. 8 The introduction of the petrographical microscope and its accessories, bringing as it did quick and delicate methods for determining the mineral constitution of a rock, naturally enough drew away the attention of petrographers from the Slower and less brilliant methods of chemical analysis, which up to that time had been almost the only ones in use. Moreover most of the analyses of the period were, as we now know, inaccurate and failed to show the real chemical differences between individual rocks. The multiplication of the number of analyses and the improvements in the methods of rock analysis which have been made during the last decade, particularly by Hillebrand, have disclosed important differences among rocks formerly classed together, and thus necessitated a considerable elaboration of the systems of classification. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Geology, Vol. 8: July August, 1900 It appears then that in general the diagram of a rock-series will consist of curved lines to indicate the variations in percent age amount of the several bases'. Of these curves we may dis distinguish two kinds: (a) When the constituent in question first increases to a maximum and then decreases, or increases first more rapidly and then less rapidly, or decreases first less rapidly and then more rapidly, the curve will be Eonvex upward; (e) When it decreases to a minimum and then increases, or decreases first more rapidly and then less rapidly, or increases first less rapidly and then more rapidly, the curve will be concave upward. This. Classification is not an exhaustive one, for there may be curves which are in ected, being convex in one part and concave in another, but it will be sufficient to consider the simpler cases. Since the sum of the ordinates for all the bases falls off steadily in linear fashion, its curve of variation 'being the straight line yx, it follows that in any series, other than an ideal linear one, some of the bases must give convex and others concave curves. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Geology, 1900, Vol. 8: A Semi-Quarterly Magazine of Geology and Related Sciences The introduction of the petrographical microscope and its accessories, bringing as it did quick and delicate methods for determining the mineral constitution of a rock, naturally enough drew away the attention of petrographers from the slower and less brilliant methods of chemical analysis, which up to that time had been almost the only ones in use. With this elaboration rock names have been introduced into the science with a rapidity which is little Short of bewildering. The older petrological nomenclature was largely binomial or polynomial (i. E., mica-syenite, quartz-mica-diorite) though the recent names seem planned for a monomial nomenclature (i. E., ciminite). It is therefore not strange that misunderstanding has arisen in some quarters, where it is not realized that the new names proposed are for the most part specific and varietal in their nature and in no way to be correlated with the great family names such as granite or gabbro, and hence a protest has been made against what seems a needless overburdening of the science with names. Without entering upon this question here it may, I think, be stated with all assurance that some reforms are imperatively demanded before the worker will be fully equipped to discover the relationships among rocks because of the incubus of unclassified facts by which the science is now encumbered. Some of the particular reforms which to me seem desirable and practicable will be briefly described. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Geology, 1894, Vol. 1 It may serve a useful purpose at the present time in possibly aiding those who are engaged in the study Of the oldest rocks of North America, if I place before them, as briefly as possible, the main facts which in my Opinion have now been satisfactorily proved regarding the corresponding rocks of Britain, and if I indicate at the same time some of the more probable inferences in those cases where the facts, at present known, do not warrant a definite conclusion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Geological Magazine, or Monthly Journal of Geology, Vol. 4: January December, 1907 Director of the Geological Survey of Scotland, however remote his field of work might be, his ever-active pen and pencil kept him in touch with the world at large. The Story of a Boulder. Gleanings from the Notebook of a Geologist his Memoir of Edward Forbes The Scenery Of Scotland viewed in connection with its Physical Geology (1865, 3rd edition and many other of his writings 1 were read with the keenest enjoyment. We published in February, 1890, a portrait of Sir A. Geikie and a brief summary of his work up to that date, just prior to his election for the first time as President of the Geological Society. The addresses which he gave during the two years that he occupied the chair formed the nucleus Of perhaps his most important work, published in 1897 under the title of The Ancient Volcanoes of Great Britain, two volumes, beautifully printed and illustrated. In the same year he established the Summary of Progress Of the Geological Survey, an annual publication which gives an official record of the work done by this institution. He prefaced the first number with an account of the Origin and History of the Geological Survey and Museum, a subject which he had dealt with more personally in 1895 in his Memoir of Sir Andrew Crombie Ramsay. While still Director General he edited in 1899 a third volume of Hutton's Theory of the Earth, from the ms. That had long been in the possession of the Geological Society. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Geological Magazine, or Monthly Journal of Geology, 1891, Vol. 8: With Which Is Incorporated "the Geologist," Nos. 319 to 330; Decade III In contrast with this the Extra-peninsular area, if we except the Upper Tertiary beds at the top of the sequence and the Archaean gneisses at the base, contains few sedimentary rocks which are not of marine origin. Almost everywhere they are intensely disturbed, and the area is essentially one of structural mountain ranges, that is, of ranges whose general direction is closely connected with, and caused by, the disturbance the beds have undergone. Of this area we are at present concerned with the Himalayas, that system of mountains which rises abruptly from the plains of Upper India, range beyond range, to the snow-clad summits forming the highest Spots on the surface of the Earth. In the contour of the two areas there is a vast difference. The surface of the Peninsular area shows rounded outlying and gentle slopes, except where the outcrop of hard or massive beds has led to the formation of scarps; the gradients of the streams are at, their beds sandy, and seldom do they show signs of active erosion of their channels; in fact, the Peninsular area shows all the features of an ancient land-surface, long exposed to subaerial denudation, in which the streams and hill-lpes have alike gone far towards reaching a condition of equilibrium. The Himalayas, on the contrary, are a region Of deep, steep-sided, valleys and gorges nearly everywhere the streams and rivers alike are torrents owing over a bed of coarse boulders, everywhere, with but local exceptions, they are evidently eroding their channels, while the steep slopes and sharp crests of the ridges, no less than the constant landslips and general instability Of the soil, betoken a country in which the action Of rain and frosts on the hill-sides has not been able to keep pace with the deepening of the stream-beds by erosion.
