Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over millions of years, living creatures have evolved in relation to the Earth's electromagnetic energy. Now, we're surrounded by human-made frequencies that challenge our health and survival. An Electric Silent Spring reports the effects of electrification and wireless devices on people, plants, bee colonies, and frogs around the globe. It presents solutions for people who want to reduce their exposure to electromagnetic radiation. This pioneering book is for anyone concerned about the health of the environment and the people and other creatures that inhabit it.

Download or read book Bio inspired Tactile Sensing written by Moritz Scharf and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2021-01-01 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transfers of natural mechanisms and structures into artificial, technical applications are successful approaches for innovation and become more important nowadays. The concept of Biomechatronics provides a structured framework to do so. Following these ideas, this work analyses a novel tactile sensor inspired by natural vibrissae. The sense of touch is an indispensable part of the sensory system of living beings. In, e.g., rats, the so-called vibrissal system, including long sensory hairs around the muzzle of the animals (vibrissae), is an essential part of tactile perception. Rats can determine the location, shape, and texture of an object by touching it with their vibrissae. Transferring these abilities to an artificial sensor design, the interaction between the hair/sensor shaft and different objects are analyzed. The sensor/hair shaft fulfills different functions in terms of a preprocessing of the captured signals. Therefore, by knowing and controlling these effects, the captured signals can be optimized in a way that particular information inside the captured signals is pronounced.

Download or read book Davidson Black written by Dora Hood and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1964-12-15 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1929 a fossilized skull found in Peking was named Sinanthropus pekinensis, Peking Man. Dr. Davidson Black, a Canadian anatomist and anthropologist, was responsible for finding and identifying this important clue to the nature of the ancestors and development of modern Man. Although he won world renown for this discovery, until now little has been written about the distinguished scientist. In this, the first full account of his life, Mrs. Hood describes Dr. Black's education—at the Toronto Model School, where he was one of the many pupils who distinguished himself in later life; at Harbord Collegiate in Toronto; and at the School of Medicine of the University of Toronto where he first began to show a marked interest in the study of anatomy. She follows his career then to a teaching position at Western Reserve University, and through the usual sequence of opportunities that eventually led him to China. It was while Dr. Black was on the staff of the Peking Union Medical College that he was able to pursue his interest in a promising area of human prehistory, and these investigations culminated in the discovery of Peking Man. Mrs. Hood has succeeded in bringing together with care and perception the story of Dr. Black and his work, which was scattered in many places, and does so with an ease and simplicity of expression which will attract readers. The fascination of Davidson Black's devotion to the exploration of the mysteries of human pre-history has been well rendered.
Download or read book Unbalanced written by Simeon Locke and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2011 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The symptoms of schizophrenia have generated interest for more than two centuries. How are they produced? Where do they come from? In this highly stimulating book, Dr Locke proposes a new basic mechanism to account for many of the findings in schizophrenia. His ideas are based on observations and experiments at a State Psychiatric Hospital where he was the director of a Neurological Unit for ten years. He was struck by an outstanding sign of schizophrenia which had not attracted attention in the classical literature. Schizophrenia patients, he noticed, were too alert, too attentive. If this hyperawareness or widespread unfocussed attention is the result of excessive arousal, Dr Locke reasoned it would make sense to look into the vestibular system which is alleged to be one of the most effective contributions to the ascending reticular activation system. This original view of schizophrenia is attractive because it is creative, supported by a wide range of evidence and above all testable. Unbalanced: A View From the Vestibule will be of interest not only to psychiatrists, neuroscientists and mental health workers, but also to anyone interested in how the human mind works.

Download or read book Emotional Value in the Composition Classroom written by Ryan Crawford and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-08-24 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using the concept of "plasticity," or the brain’s ability to change through growth and reorganization, as a theoretical framework, this book argues that encouraging an exploration of the self better establishes emotional value in the composition classroom. This book explores recent evidence from studies in modern neuroscience to provide biological correlations between current and developing theory and pedagogy in Composition Studies. Starting with the concept of self, each subsequent chapter builds a neurobiological understanding of how emotional value, intrinsic motivation, creativity, and happiness are constructed and felt. This material exploration shows how these factors can maintain motivation, improve long-term memory, encourage creative risk, and initiate complex considerations of being. Recognizing the shift in Composition Studies to posthuman and new materialist methodologies, this modern neuroscience is presented as a useful parallel to—rather than being at odds with—these and other current methodologies, theories, and pedagogies. Outlining the need for a more student-focused, guided-discovery framework for the composition classroom, this interdisciplinary resource will be of interest to scholars and students in the field of Composition Studies, Communication Studies, Education, Psychology, and Philosophy.
