Book excerpt: David Joshua is a computer-hacker-for-hire who specializes in "equalizing" the world for working people. He erases student loans, parking tickets, and unfair tax debts. Despite his notions of being a modern "Robin Hood," David wants to get out of the game and legitimize his life by marrying his girlfriend and making his family proud of his life choices. During one of his final hacking gigs, David stumbles across a series of payments hidden in an IRS database revealing a conspiracy to trigger World War III. Suddenly, his accounts are frozen, his girlfriend hates him, and there's literally no one who will take David at face value. His world shattered, David can only trust two things - his laptop, and a sarcastic FBI agent - while on the run from a spec-ops strike team whose orders are to "kill on sight."

Published in conjunction with his first solo museum exhibition, Joshua Rashaad McFadden: I Believe I'll Run On demonstrates his mastery of a wide range of photographic genres--social documentary, reportage, portraiture, and fine art--and his use of the medium to confront racism and anti-Black violence. Like Black photographers before him, such as Gordon Parks, Roy DeCarava, Carrie Mae Weems, Dawoud Bey, and LaToya Ruby Frazier, McFadden documents the beauty of Black life and illuminates the specificity of Black living in our historical present, including a series of impactful photographs devoted to the Black Lives Matter protests in 2020. Along with a candid conversation between McFadden and artist Lyle Ashton Harris and an essay that traces McFadden's meteoric career, this catalogue offers an overview of and insight into a poignant and deeply personal body of work, asserting McFadden's key role in shaping the art and visual culture of the United States.

Book Elk s Run

Download or read book Elk s Run written by Joshua Hale Fialkov and published by Villard. This book was released on 2009-03-25 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Featuring more than 100 pages of never-before-seen material! The Harvey Award—nominated sensation that rocked the comics world–and left readers hanging in sheer suspense–is now a full-length graphic novel that finally carries the stunning Elk’s Run saga to its shocking conclusion. The town of Elk’s Ridge, West Virginia, was built on a dream: The dream of war-scarred Vietnam veterans to live in peace and harmony, in a place untouched by violence, crime, corruption, or greed. A living Norman Rockwell painting, governed by the most basic values and free of all things considered undesirable by its founders. It was supposed to be paradise. And for a while, it was. Over the years, some in Elk’s Ridge have grown restless. They fear their refuge has become a prison . . . or a tomb. And they yearn to do the forbidden: escape. But when one desperate bid for freedom ends in a tragic accident, a heinous act of mob justice suddenly tears the idyllic mask from this promised land and the evil its residents sought to keep out blooms from within. Now, as a deadly chain reaction of events threatens the future of Elk’s Ridge, its elders gird for battle against the real world. And a group of terrified teens prepare to make their own stand–against the people they once trusted and the only life they’ve ever known. Because there’s nothing left to do but fight or die. A chillingly lyrical tale, rendered in starkly beautiful, visceral artwork, Elk’s Run is an unforgettable and unrelentingly powerful graphic novel event not to be missed. With an introduction by Charlie Houston, author of Already Dead From the Trade Paperback edition.

Book Preserving the White Man s Republic

Download or read book Preserving the White Man s Republic written by Joshua A. Lynn and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2019-04-10 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Preserving the White Man’s Republic, Joshua Lynn reveals how the national Democratic Party rebranded majoritarian democracy and liberal individualism as conservative means for white men in the South and North to preserve their mastery on the eve of the Civil War. Responding to fears of African American and female political agency, Democrats in the late 1840s and 1850s reinvented themselves as "conservatives" and repurposed Jacksonian Democracy as a tool for local majorities of white men to police racial and gender boundaries by democratically withholding rights. With the policy of "popular sovereignty," Democrats left slavery’s expansion to white men’s democratic decision-making. They also promised white men local democracy and individual autonomy regarding temperance, religion, and nativism. Translating white men’s household mastery into political power over all women and Americans of color, Democrats united white men nationwide and made democracy a conservative assertion of white manhood. Democrats thereby turned traditional Jacksonian principles—grassroots democracy, liberal individualism, and anti-statism—into staples of conservatism. As Lynn’s book shows, this movement sent conservatism on a new, populist trajectory, one in which democracy can be called upon to legitimize inequality and hierarchy, a uniquely American conservatism that endures in our republic today.

Book Roadrunner

  • ISBN : 1478021691
  • Pages : 112 pages

Download or read book Roadrunner written by Joshua Clover and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2021-07-13 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers' 1972 song “Roadrunner” captures the freedom and wonder of cruising down the highway late at night with the radio on. Although the song circles Boston's beltway, its significance reaches far beyond Richman's deceptively simple declarations of love for modern moonlight, the made world, and rock & roll. In Roadrunner, cultural theorist and poet Joshua Clover charts both the song's emotional power and its elaborate history, tracing its place in popular music from Chuck Berry to M.I.A. He also locates “Roadrunner” at the intersection of car culture, industrialization, consumption, mobility, and politics. Like the song itself, Clover tells a story about a particular time and place—the American era that rock & roll signifies—that becomes a story about love and the modern world.
