Book Jewish Images in the Christian Church

Download or read book Jewish Images in the Christian Church written by Henry N. Claman and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Beginning in the Third Century with frescoes in the catacombs of Rome, public art began to illustrate the doctrine of supersessionism. This analysis of a millennium of Christian art outlines the path by which Christians reinterpreted the Hebrew Scriptures to prove they foretold the ascendancy of Christianity. Starting with a solid introduction to the origins of Christianity and the beginnings of Christian art in the catacombs of Rome, Henry Claman skillfully demonstrates the development of the anti-Jewish message of Christian art. The study culminates with analyses of the majestic cathedral at Chartres, the public burning of the Talmud in Paris in 1248, and the expulsion of the Jews from France and England."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book The Jewish Christian Church

Download or read book The Jewish Christian Church written by Burke A. Hinsdale and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-05 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Jewish-Christian Church The chapters comprising this little book were originally written as parts of a much more ambitious work. A variety of causes brought that work to a stand-still several years ago, and it is doubtful when it will be completed, if at all. I send them out in this form, believing that they have a center of unity, and also that they will prove serviceable to students of the Bible, and of Church History and Theological Science. There can be no greater errors than these: "The Bible can be understood as an unrelated fact, separate from the general history of the world"; and "the History of the Church can be grasped simply by knowing what is going on in the homes and public meetings of Christians." Both the Scriptures and Church History are parts of the History of the Race, and they must be taken in their historical connections. He has studied the Bible to little purpose (other than a moral one) who has not learned to watch the currents of events and thoughts that move behind the page - that is. has not learned to read between the lines. To get into the minds of men who lived so long ago as the primitive Christians is difficult, but I hope I have not wholly failed in my attempt. Book An Introduction to Jewish Christian Relations

Download or read book An Introduction to Jewish Christian Relations written by Edward Kessler and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-02-18 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relations between Christians and Jews over the past two thousand years have been characterised to a great extent by mutual distrust and by Christian discrimination and violence against Jews. In recent decades, however, a new spirit of dialogue has been emerging, beginning with an awakening among Christians of the Jewish origins of Christianity, and encouraging scholars of both traditions to work together. An Introduction to Jewish-Christian Relations sheds fresh light on this ongoing interfaith encounter, exploring key writings and themes in Jewish-Christian history, from the Jewish context of the New Testament to major events of modern times, including the rise of ecumenism, the horrors of the Holocaust, and the creation of the state of Israel. This accessible theological and historical study also touches on numerous related areas such as Jewish and interfaith studies, philosophy, sociology, cultural studies, international relations and the political sciences.

Book A Theology of the Jewish Christian Reality Discerning the way

Download or read book A Theology of the Jewish Christian Reality Discerning the way written by Paul Matthews Van Buren and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first, and most referred to, Christian systemic theology to make clear for the Church the relevance of the continuing existence of the Jewish people to every aspect of its theolgy. The three volumes set out to correct a major and central deficiency in the field: that the continuing existence of Israel, the people of God and the people of Jesus, whose ancestors produced by far the largest part of the Church's Bible, and who have lived by the covenant of those Scriptures through the ages, has been either ignored or treated negatively. A Theology of the Jewish-Christian Reality continues to stimulate fresh thinking about the foundations for responsible theological reflection. This opening volume explores the implications of the Church's own confession that the God it worships is the God of Israel. Just this truth, it is argued, is expressed in the Church's doctrine of the Trinity, and it grounds the further reflections on the Church's identity, on the Bible, on revelation and on redemption. Originally published in 1983 by Harper and Row Publishers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Jewish Temple and the Christian Church: A Series of Discourses on the Epistle to the Hebrews These Discourses were delivered several years ago in the ordinary course of my ministry. The Notes which I have added to this new Edition are intended, like the Discourses themselves, not for scholars, but for ordinary Christian people to whom learned commentaries are inaccessible or useless. I have not attempted either to correct every word or phrase which seemed to me inaccurately translated in our English Authorised Version, nor to discuss the conflicting interpretations which exegetical scholars have given of difficult passages. Book Jewish Believers in Jesus

Download or read book Jewish Believers in Jesus written by Oskar Skarsaune and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 968 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the role of the Jewish believers in the first five centuries C.E., this important study re-examines some of the most foundational questions for our understanding of the formation of the early church. Who were the Jewish believers, and how did they understand themselves in relation to the Gentile believers and the Jewish community? Was the border area they occupied between Jew and Gentile a hospitable and welcoming one or was it one in which two incompatible identities clashed? The essays in this volume question the traditional paradigm that saw an early "parting of the ways" between Judaism and Christianity and suggests instead that some Jewish believers in Jesus stayed closely integrated with the Jewish community even while their theology differed.

Book Jewish Christianity and the History of Judaism

Download or read book Jewish Christianity and the History of Judaism written by Annette Yoshiko Reed and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2018-07-12 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Jewish-Christianity" is a contested category in current research. But for precisely this reason, it may offer a powerful lens through which to rethink the history of Jewish/Christian relations. Traditionally, Jewish-Christianity has been studied as part of the origins and early diversity of Christianity. Collecting revised versions of previously published articles together with new materials, Annette Yoshiko Reed reconsiders Jewish-Christianity in the context of Late Antiquity and in conversation with Jewish studies. She brings further attention to understudied texts and traditions from Late Antiquity that do not fit neatly into present day notions of Christianity as distinct from Judaism. In the process, she uses these materials to probe the power and limits of our modern assumptions about religion and identity.
