Download or read book Jesus in the Talmud written by Peter Schäfer and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2009-02-09 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scattered throughout the Talmud, the founding document of rabbinic Judaism in late antiquity, can be found quite a few references to Jesus--and they're not flattering. In this lucid, richly detailed, and accessible book, Peter Schäfer examines how the rabbis of the Talmud read, understood, and used the New Testament Jesus narrative to assert, ultimately, Judaism's superiority over Christianity. The Talmudic stories make fun of Jesus' birth from a virgin, fervently contest his claim to be the Messiah and Son of God, and maintain that he was rightfully executed as a blasphemer and idolater. They subvert the Christian idea of Jesus' resurrection and insist he got the punishment he deserved in hell--and that a similar fate awaits his followers. Schäfer contends that these stories betray a remarkable familiarity with the Gospels--especially Matthew and John--and represent a deliberate and sophisticated anti-Christian polemic that parodies the New Testament narratives. He carefully distinguishes between Babylonian and Palestinian sources, arguing that the rabbis' proud and self-confident countermessage to that of the evangelists was possible only in the unique historical setting of Persian Babylonia, in a Jewish community that lived in relative freedom. The same could not be said of Roman and Byzantine Palestine, where the Christians aggressively consolidated their political power and the Jews therefore suffered. A departure from past scholarship, which has played down the stories as unreliable distortions of the historical Jesus, Jesus in the Talmud posits a much more deliberate agenda behind these narratives.

In a culture that emphasizes accomplishment and ever-higher goals, we feel driven to do more, achieve more, be more. And we get caught up in the unforgiving treadmill of self-imposed rules, believing that we should, we need to, we must. The result? Anger, frustration, and anxiety that keep us far away from the life of peace that Jesus promised. For years, Sandra McCollom lived in this trap. Finally worn out from striving for perfection but constantly feeling like a failure, one day she prayed in desperation, begging God for help. God answered Sandra by setting her on a life-changing journey to discover the riches of His grace. In I Tried Until I Almost Died, Sandra shares how she left behind her burden of anxiety and fear and shows you how to experience for yourself the freedom of trusting solely in the perfecting power of God’s grace.

Download or read book Misquoting Jesus written by Bart D. Ehrman and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2009-10-06 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When world-class biblical scholar Bart Ehrman first began to study the texts of the Bible in their original languages he was startled to discover the multitude of mistakes and intentional alterations that had been made by earlier translators. In Misquoting Jesus, Ehrman tells the story behind the mistakes and changes that ancient scribes made to the New Testament and shows the great impact they had upon the Bible we use today. He frames his account with personal reflections on how his study of the Greek manuscripts made him abandon his once ultraconservative views of the Bible. Since the advent of the printing press and the accurate reproduction of texts, most people have assumed that when they read the New Testament they are reading an exact copy of Jesus's words or Saint Paul's writings. And yet, for almost fifteen hundred years these manuscripts were hand copied by scribes who were deeply influenced by the cultural, theological, and political disputes of their day. Both mistakes and intentional changes abound in the surviving manuscripts, making the original words difficult to reconstruct. For the first time, Ehrman reveals where and why these changes were made and how scholars go about reconstructing the original words of the New Testament as closely as possible. Ehrman makes the provocative case that many of our cherished biblical stories and widely held beliefs concerning the divinity of Jesus, the Trinity, and the divine origins of the Bible itself stem from both intentional and accidental alterations by scribes -- alterations that dramatically affected all subsequent versions of the Bible.
Download or read book Holy Gravity written by Laura Jackson and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2023-07-03 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you heard people say, “Fearing God doesn’t mean to be afraid of Him but to be in awe of Him and revere Him?” I have, too. But what if it’s more than that? And what if this fear can change our lives? We are living in dark, chaotic times where sin is raging in the world and our hearts. Even many in churches who say they love God are fighting habitual sins. What if our sin problem is a fear problem? In my grief, I searched Scripture, asking the Lord for a deeper understanding of the fear of God. He revealed a powerful point of clarification—fearing God is not only a mindset but a way of life. It’s not just how we feel or what we think about God but how we respond visibly to His glory. With Scripture as its foundation and authority, Holy Gravity explores the connection between our sanctification and the fear of God. God’s people are to be set apart; our greatest distinction from the world is our fear of God manifested in holy living. Through a relationship with Jesus Christ, God frees us from sin, maturing us by the Holy Spirit in visible ways. In this place of God-focused fear, we can offer the hope of Christ to the world and one another. I pray you will find that God intends our fear of Him to transform our lives and make us holy. “Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.” Ecclesiastes 12:13

Book excerpt: Its Not About You sets before evangelical Christians a threefold challenge: take stock of ones life; assess the depth of commitment to promoting oneself at Gods expense; and follow Jesus Christ completely in faithful obedience. Collins, an experienced teacher and international medical missionary, draws upon background as a physician and an author to diagnose the human condition of idolatry, in which individuals place themselves and their desires ahead of God and his will for their lives. The discussion emerging from this diagnostic work will draw in readers with its reasoned use of Scripture, its inclusive depictions of the human condition, and its passionate appeals for Christians to turn their lives over to Jesus Christ. Spanning three sectionsIts Not About a Lot of Things, Its Not about Your Blessings, and Making It Not About Usthe twenty-five chapters in Its Not About You offers readers a rigorous and comprehensive assessment of their lives, culminating with a call to discipleship. As the last chapter notes, Contrary to what our society would like to believe, theres only one way to follow Jesuscompletely. If you have found your life lacking focus and purpose, if you doubted that endlessly chasing the worlds bright and shiny trinkets was the ultimate point of living, and if you have found Jesus call to follow him beguiling you to respond, then Its Not About You will serve as your guide to replacing your own self with God at the center of your life.

And what if you were tagging along behind eleven men led by Jesus to the Garden of Gethsemane? You'd leave the Upper Room and go deep into the Kidron Valley to the garden. There the temple police and a half-crazed crowd arrive brandishing torches. Jesus is taken to the palace of Annas and then to the High Priest Caiaphas. What insight do we gain from history, archaeology, and most importantly the New Testament about where they lived? In the morning Jesus would be sent to the Chamber of Hewn Stone. What was this place and why is it important to the Passion narratives? On to Pilate's Judgment Hall where new archaeological evidence questions its traditional location. You pick up the trail again on the Via Dolorosa and follow Jesus to Jerusalem's killing field. There you find the Savior dying on a Roman cross. In just a few hours you have followed him from the Upper Room to Joseph's tomb and have gained valuable insight into each stopover to help you on your own journey to Calvary.
