Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lee Mansion: What It Was and What It Is It was in the year 1768 that Col. Jeremiah Lee, a wealthy merchant, then at the height of his prosperity, laid the foundation of his princely hor'ne among' the rocks of the little fishing and commercial port of Marblehead;' Fashioned as it was, after the homes of his ancestors, it needed but the hawthorne and the hedgerows to transport one to old England, and indeed the very timbers of which it was framed were grown in the mother country. Built at a cost of over ten thousand pounds, it could hardly be rivaled through out the whole province of Massachusetts Bay - and overshadowing, with its grandeur, the humble home of the fisher folk, no wonder it became to them the Mansion, and the Lee Mansion it has always been, the pride of the whole town. Book The Buildings of Peter Harrison

Download or read book The Buildings of Peter Harrison written by John Fitzhugh Millar and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-10-02 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps the most important architect ever to have worked in America, Peter Harrison's renown suffers from the destruction of most of his papers when he died in 1775. He was born in Yorkshire, England in 1716 and trained to be an architect as a teenager. He also became a ship captain, and soon sailed to ports in America, where he began designing some of the most iconic buildings of the continent. In a clandestine operation, he procured the plans for the French Canadian fortress of Louisbourg, enabling Massachusetts Governor William Shirley to capture it in 1745. This setback forced the French to halt their operation to capture all of British America and to give up British territory they had captured in India. As a result, he was rewarded with commissions to design important buildings in Britain and in nearly all British colonies around the world, and he became the first person ever to have designed buildings on six continents. He designed mostly in a neo-Palladian style, and invented a way of building wooden structures so as to look like carved stone--"wooden rustication." He also designed some of America's most valuable furniture, including inventing the coveted "block-front," and introducing the bombe motif. In America, he lived in Newport, Rhode Island, and in New Haven, Connecticut, where he died at the beginning of the War of Independence.

Book excerpt: American House tells the story of the development of domestic architecture in the Untied States, from Native American longhouses, pueblos and tipis to the postmodern adventures of Frank Gehry and the new 'planned communities' exemplified by Seaside and Celebration. Architectural style - among the most visible signs of cultural values - is the primary focus of the book and the history of style in American housing is as rich and complex as the history of the country itself. An introduction provides a broad overview of the history of American houses and the forces - cultural, technological, economic and geographic - that shaped them. Subsequent chapters cover early 'folk' architecture; the colonial architecture of New England and the houses built under the influence of the Dutch, French and Spanish; the increasing refinement that came with Palladian and Federalist styles; the revival of European styles in the first half of the 19th century; early workers' housing; High Victorian style, encompassing 'stick' and 'shingle' houses, among many other developments; the eclecticism of the late 19th and early 20th centuries; the Prairie School: the influence of modernism and the international
