Book excerpt: Prussia had sat on the sidelines in 1805 whilst Napoleon hammered the Austrian and Russian armies in a dazzling series of victories culminating at the battle of Austerlitz. As the court of Frederick William III awaited a favourable moment to intervene, they looked on their army with a misplaced confidence based on the deeds of Frederick the Great, his well-drilled infantry and daring cavalry. However, the army had not kept up with the development of the French: their training suffered the constraints of financial cut-backs, their leaders were divided, vain, egocentric, incompetent or just too plain old. Frederick William was determined to cross swords with Napoleon, using a violation of territory by the French the year before as a pretext he started to mobilise his troops. His opponent was at the height of his military power. Although he did not really want to have another war so soon after crushing Austria, Napoleon was not the sort of man to back down from a challenge from the Prussians. As the troops readied themselves for the upcoming war, the Prussian generals vacilitated, abrogated responsibility, argued and split their forces. Napoleon organised his men into three mutually supporting columns as he invaded Prussian territory, unable to divine the intentions of his opponents. He was ready for all situations. Napoleon with his main army faced a sizeable portion of the Prussian forces at Jena, whilst Davout, perhaps his best subordinate, stood outnumbered but unshaken at Auerstädt. The fighting was brutal, short and bloody and would lead to Prussia being humbled for years to come, seething for revenge. This book formed part of the Special Campaigns series, which was written in the early years at the turn of the twentieth century to provide detailed assessments of the historic campaigns of the past for the benefit of the officers of the British Army. They were all written by current or recently retired officers of the Army who shared their wealth of experience and insight to a new generation, each officer having had a specialist area of expertise. Colonel Maude was an authority on the campaigns of Napoleon, and wrote three volumes for the series, the others focussing on the 1805 and 1813 campaigns. He describes the campaign in brilliant vivid detail, using material from the official archives of both France and Prussia as well as numerous eye-witness details. A fascinating book in an excellent series. Author – Colonel Frederic Natusch Maude, C.B., late R.E. (1854–1933) Illustrations – 5 Maps and Diagrams.

Book excerpt: The Prussian army at war against Napoleon The author of this book has chosen as his subject the campaigns of the Prussian army during the Napoleonic Wars, specifically between the humiliating defeat of his countrymen at the Battle of Jena in October of 1806 and the next major conflict at the Battle of Eylau in February of 1807. The author has an understandably partisan motivation, but nevertheless this is an in-depth, serious and thorough historical analysis of a time and conflict that is rarely covered in books available in the English language and it will therefore be a welcome addition to the libraries of those interested in the Napoleonic Wars as they touched the continental European powers. Goltz is clear in his condemnation of the performance of the Prussian Army in 1806, but asserts that it redeemed itself in early 1807 by its performance at Eylau and his books tracks the performance of the Prussian forces from their darkest hour to, perhaps, the first glimmer of light from potential success against the hitherto invincible French under Napoleon. Certainly the consequences of the defeat at Jena were more far reaching for Prussia than could be remedied by the outcome at Eylau. Indeed, whilst L'Estocq's corps acquitted itself well at Eylau within a principally Russian force, that alone was insufficient to claim a victory of Prussian arms in a bloody stalemate of a battle that ultimately benefited none of its protagonists to any degree strategically. So this is the account of an army finding its worth after defeat and gathering itself at the beginning of the long road that would ultimately lead to the rout and vengeance at Waterloo. Available in softback and hardcover with dust jacket for collectors.

Book excerpt: A classic analysis of one of Napoleon's great campaigns in Europe Maude's Jena Campaign examines the famous twin battles of Jena and Auerstadt from the perspectives of both protagonists and explains thoroughly how the French army comprehensively beat the Prussians to effectively neutralise them as an enemy with an Allied coalition. This campaign, fought when the Emperor's star shone brightest, demonstrates a genius for warfare that has seldom appeared on the stage of history-before or since.

Book excerpt: Osprey's examination of the battles of Jena and Auerstadt of the Napoleonic Wars (1799-1815). Forewarned of Prussia's intention to declare war on France, Napoleon decided to strike first with a bold advance from Wurzburg into Saxony. On 14 October the double battle was fought: Napoleon with 96,000 men and 120 guns engaged and heavily defeated Prince Hohenlohe and General Ruchel. The decisive engagement was fought further north where Marshal Davout with 27,000 men and 40 guns routed the main Prussian army under Frederick William IV and the Duke of Brunswick. This title examines these two battles, Jena and Auerstadt in detail, showing clearly the swiftness with which Napoleon dealt Prussia's military machine a severe blow.

Book Napoleon s Conquest of Prussia 1806

Download or read book Napoleon s Conquest of Prussia 1806 written by Francis Loraine Petre O.B.E and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2011-06-14 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the beginning of 1806, Napoleon could feel rather satisfied with his conquests, although the Russian Bear had been brutally beaten and the Austrian Eagle damaged beyond repair after the carnage of Austerlitz. However lurking to the north were the inheritors of Frederick the Great’s legacy of Rossbach and Leuthen, their sullen neutrality during 1805 had been bought by the price of the annexation of Hanover, the Prince-elector of which sat on the British throne. It would only be a matter of time before the Prussian army tested their might against Napoleon’s legions, young Prussians could be found outside the French embassy in Berlin sharpening their swords against its steps, Queen Luise was a vocal focus for the war party. With the most positive expectations for the campaign, the lumbering Prussian army, led by veterans in their sixties, seventies and even eighties, groped to find Napoleon and his much faster moving corps d’armée. Napoleon’s Marshals and generals were mostly, apart from a few notable exceptions, one bordering on treason, at the top of their professional competency. Few if any however would have expected the campaign to unfold as it did, as Napoleon actively searched for the main Prussian army, he found and destroyed a significant portion of the army at Jena, a single of his corps, under Davout, faced and defeated the majority at Auerstädt. What followed thereafter was the most relentless pursuit of the Napoleonic Wars, combined with a number of capitulations which did not honour to Prussian arms. Prussia was defeated completely, with a scant regard to future relations with this state, Napoleon dismembered the state, imposed war reparations that would have made the French at Compiegne, a century, later blush, allowed his soldiers to pillage on an unheard of scale. Not that he himself was immune to the tendency to take what might allowed, he took amongst other trophies, Frederick the Great’s own sword. Reduced to a second rate power Prussia, occupied by French soldiers, would look to the crumbs that Napoleon might hand out and hope that other powers might topple the mighty Napoleon. As with all of Petre’s books on the Napoleonic period, his work is well written, scrupulously researched and balanced. We have taken the liberty as diacritics appear in Petre’s book to change Blucher to Blücher.
