Book Global Japanization

Download or read book Global Japanization written by Tony Elger and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global Japaniziation? Brings together research from North America, Japan, Europe and Latin America to analyse the influence of Japanese manufacturing investment and Japanese working practices across the global economy. The editors present original case studies of work reorganization and workers’ experiences within both Japanese companies and those of their competitors in diverse sectors and national settings. These studies provide a wide-ranging critique of conventional accounts of Japanese models of management and production, and their implications for employees. They offer new evidence and fresh perspectives on the role of "transplants" in disseminating manufacturing innovations, and on the responses of non-Japanese firm in reorganizing production operations and industrial relations.

Book British Politics in the Global Age

Download or read book British Politics in the Global Age written by Joel Krieger and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1999 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In British Politics in the Global Age, Joel Krieger provides an in-depth study of New Labour's model of government and the political challenges it faces. Krieger analyzes the interaction of global processes and domestic politics from the organization of production to the formation of class, ethnic, and gender-based identities. The book considers how these processes compromise sovereignty, complicate national identities, forge new political agendas, create electoral volatility, and complicate the art of politics. Krieger develops an original framework for analyzing New Labour in comparison to three models of social democracy and places the British case firmly in the context of alternative national models and European debates. Employing an approach with potential applications well beyond the UK, the book reconceptualizes globalization and introduces the concept "modular politics" to explain the context-dependent processes of identity formation that shape--and potentially destabilize--contemporary politics. Thoroughly researched and clearly argued, British Politics in the Global Age is essential reading for anyone who wishes to understand the full ramifications of New Labour for both Europe and the United States.--Publisher description.

Book Japanese Management

Download or read book Japanese Management written by Hitoshi Iwashita and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-11-03 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a new understanding of the constellations of logics in Japanese management practices in Asia and the West. Through comparative ethnographic case studies in a Japanese multinational corporation (MNC), the book explores the cultural meanings of family, corporation, market and religion logics at each subsidiary’s site in Thailand, Taiwan, Belgium and the United States. In doing so, the book defines cultural space through an institutional logic approach. It argues that logics are culturally interpreted, which can impose a serious limitation on the institutional logic approach based on the analysis of Western society. It reveals that Japanese ‘family’ logics and Theravada Buddhism in Asia are strengthening each other and this directly supports the presupposition of amplification. It further elaborates on the ongoing constellations of logics that are continuously formed in relation to geographical contexts. The book also explains that the boundaries of organisational communities are not automatically formed by Japanese expatriates but constructed through actors’ profiles, which, in turn, raises their importance. Therefore, this book is a must-read for researchers, managers and anyone interested in Japanese MNCs.

Book The Impact of Japanese Investment on the New Town of Milton Keynes

Download or read book The Impact of Japanese Investment on the New Town of Milton Keynes written by Alexander Roy and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 1998-06 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreign direct investment (FDI) is pivotal to the UK economy, with the UK being both the second largest investor abroad and the second largest host to foreign companies. Although since the Second World War FDI has been dominated by the USA, the more recent rise of Japan as both an international force in global markets and as an investor, has seen increasing amounts of Japanese FDI being directed towards the UK. Further, the perceived innovativeness of Japanese work organisation is held by many to have an even greater qualitative impact than the quantitative significance of Japanese FDI would indicate, providing both a 'demonstration' effect and a competitive spur to indigenous companies that it is believed has the power to transform the UK's competitiveness. However, many aspects of the 'Japanese challenge' have become mythologised, and it is important not to simply take these claims as axiomatic, especially as Government policy - including financial inducements to inward investors - are based upon these assumptions. Therefore, this dissertation uses primary and secondary research to assess the impact Japanese investment has had upon the new town of Milton Keynes (MK), which is the home to a significant cluster of Japanese investors, with a composition that broadly reflects FDI into the UK from Japan as a whole. The conclusion is that although there have been benefits in terms of employment, any positive transformative effect upon either indigenous industry or human capital has been limited. Further, the structural weakness in skills of the UK economy mean that Japanese investment may impose longer-term costs upon UK welfare.
