Download or read book The Atlas of the Later Zulu Wars 1883 1888 written by John Laband and published by University of Kwazulu Natal Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Later Zulu Wars of the 1880s were a last-ditch resistance to colonialism combined with bitter civil war. The consequences proved more devastating for the Zulu people than the famous Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. They took place at a time of changing fighting methods and tactics for both the British and the Zulu; the last time the British Army ever went on campaign still wearing scarlet was in Zululand in 1888. This book explains the nature of the diverse Zulu, British and Boer military forces fighting in Zululand, and the ways in which the British and the Boers fostered and exploited divisions among the Zulu people in order to maintain colonial control. The author's original research (supported by detailed maps in full color) traces the complex series of wars and battles in Zululand during the 1880s. This book places the campaigns in their historical context and assesses their broader significance. The Atlas of the Later Zulu Wars is the sequel to The Illustrated Guide to the Anglo-Zulu War, written by the author and Paul Thompson.

Webb and published by University of Kwazulu Natal Press. This book was released on 1976 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Stuart was an official in the Natal colonial civil service in the 1890s and early years of the 20th century. In meticulously recorded conversations with some 200 interlocutors, the great majority of them Africans, Stuart assembled a vast and unique collection of notes on the history and customs of the Zulu people and other peoples of what is now South Africa's KwaZulu-Natal region. This sixth volume of The James Stuart Archive series presents a further 26 sets of testimonies drawn from material in the James Stuart Collection of the Killie Campbell Africana Library in Durban, South Africa. The testimonies published in the successive volumes of The James Stuart Archive represent edited, annotated, and (where the original appears in Zulu) translated renderings of Stuart's notes and transcriptions. The testimonies that he recorded piecemeal have been arranged by the books' editors under the names of the interlocutors from whom they were obtained, and have been published in alphabetical name-order. This present volume carries the sequence from Socwatsha kaPhaphu to Zwayi kaMbombo, bringing to 185 the number of interlocutors whose testimonies have been published in the series.

Book excerpt: The Kingdom forged by Shaka was once one of the most powerful and sophisticated black states in Africa. It took the British at the height of their imperial power six months and a full military campaign to bring the kingdom down. Thereafter, Zululand was broken up, consigned to bitter civil war, and eventually annexed piecemeal, its land given over to white farmers, in a saga of humiliation and loss. This book gives an account of the dramatic emergence and tragic decline of the Zulu kingdom in the 19th century, based on research fieldwork. It ranges from themes such as Zulu social and political organization, through analysis of the vivid personalities and complex political maneuvrings of leading Zulu and their colonial opponents, to descriptions of military campaigns and battles.
