The Jack Russell has three potential coat types: rough, smooth and broken (which is a combination of the rough and smooth coats). In modern times the breed is still commonly used for working purposes - however it is more commonly used for vermin control purposes rather than sporting/hunting purposes. The Jack Russell is commonly used to trap vermin, such as foxes and groundhogs, in their dens while their owners dig to the vermin. The temperament of dogs is normally affected by the following factors: individual personality, heredity, training and socialization. It is therefore important to make sure that you meet the puppy's mother before purchasing a Jack Russell. It is also important to make sure to thoroughly socialize your Jack Russell with strangers, children and other animals during its puppyhood.
