Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developed in the late 19th century, ClevelandÃ's Little Italy neighborhood, on the cityÃ's east side, was peopled with Italian artisans and craftsmen, many of whom were drawn to jobs carving monuments for the nearby Lake View Cemetery. The compact area relied on the local parish, Holy Rosary; charitable institutions, such as Alta House; and the cohesiveness of the neighborhood to sustain itself. It also produced a number of interesting favorite sons, including Angelo Vitantonio, the inventor of the pasta machine; championship boxer Tony Brush; and Anthony Celebrezze, Cleveland mayor, federal judge, and secretary of health, education, and welfare under Pres. John F. Kennedy and Pres. Lyndon B. Johnson. The area continued to grow until after World War II, when residents graduated from the old neighborhood to ClevelandÃ's eastern suburbs. During the last 20 years, however, Little Italy has experienced a rebirth, and today the area combines Old World charm with a vibrant art scene, new housing, and a host of popular restaurants.

Book excerpt: Literary Nonfiction. Italian American Studies. "Through a fortunate concatenation of events, a collection of letters written by an Italian farmer of the time has recently become available, now archived at the Western Reserve Historical Society in Cleveland, Ohio. Between 1910 and 1913 Antonio Vasquenz, a native of the Abruzzo village of Cerchio, wrote about forty letters totaling 25,000 words to his son Angelo, an immigrant working in the coal mines of western Pennsylvania. Unlike many contadini, Antonio was fully literate. He was also a talented writer and intelligent man. Over a four-year period he described in detail, with vivid and sometimes pungent prose, all the events and trials of his life: family illness and death, agricultural conditions, and always, always the financial burdens..." from the Introduction"

Book Behind the Store

Download or read book Behind the Store written by Vincent Romeo and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-03 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the Romeo family of Cleveland, Ohio, in the 1950s, the kitchen table was the heart of the house. Not only was it the altar on which Mrs. Romeo served simple and healthy Italian food, but it had seen and heard everything. In his memoir, "Behind the Store," author Vincent Romeo narrates the stories of his life, many of which revolved around the family's kitchen table. Romeo shares his childhood experiences that centered on his relationships with his mother, father, and sister; their grocery store; and their Mount Pleasant neighborhood. The memories are at times lively and poignant and at other times painful. While remaining true to the typical Italian American experience, with his mother's food as the family's focal point, Romeo recounts his struggle to become his authentic self, despite an abusive family member. With his mother's favorite Italian recipes included, "Behind the Store" shares the stories of one man's life journey from a boy who longed for his father's love and appreciation to a man who honors his Italian American heritage.

Book Italian Americans of the Greater Mahoning Valley

Download or read book Italian Americans of the Greater Mahoning Valley written by Dr. Donna M. DeBlasio and Dr. Martha I. Pallante and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2015 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1890 and 1924, Italian immigrants flocked to Ohio's Mahoning Valley. The area's burgeoning iron and steel industries beckoned with job prospects for immigrants fleeing southern and eastern Europe--particularly from southern Italy, a region that at the time lacked opportunity and highly taxed its natives. Upon the arrival of these new residents, neighborhoods such as Youngstown's Smoky Hollow and Brier Hill offered accepting communities, and Niles Fire Brick Factory Company and Trumbull Blast Furnace provided employment. Assimilation was not always easy, and discrimination did occur, but Italian Americans ultimately prospered, making a mark not only as steelworkers but also as shopkeepers, grocers, restaurateurs, tradesmen, educators, doctors, lawyers, legislators, and mayors. This book explores the immigration experience, community, workplace dynamics, celebrations, worship, heritage, and lasting impact of the second-largest ethnic group in Ohio's Mahoning Valley.

In the nineteenth century and for long after, the Irish and Italians fought in the Catholic Church, on the waterfront, at construction sites, and in the streets. Then they made peace through romance, marrying each other on a large scale in the years after World War II. An Unlikely Union unfolds the dramatic story of how two of America's largest ethnic groups learned to love and laugh with each other in the wake of decades of animosity. The vibrant cast of characters features saints such as

Book Cleveland Slovaks

  • Pages : 132 pages

Download or read book Cleveland Slovaks written by John T. Sabol and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2009 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cleveland's Slovaks can best be characterized as survivors. Many survived ethnic persecution and poverty so they could have a chance at something better. Beginning with a small core of immigrants seeking work aboveground rather than in the coal mines of neighboring states, Cleveland's Slovak community grew through a giant chain migration. Their neighborhoods flourished close to their jobs and their churches. Many of the ancestors of today's Slovaks came to the United States classified as Hungarians. In their hearts, though, they knew what they were and what language they spoke. They held on to their native language even as they learned English and unwaveringly encouraged their children to strive for the opportunity America offered. According to the 2000 census, 93,500 northeast Ohioans claim Slovak heritage. The photographs in Cleveland Slovaks show their neighborhoods and family life and give readers an appreciation of the community's legacy.
