Download or read book 4 1 2 Years in the Italy Mission written by Everett S. Stackpole and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-23 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from 4 1/2 Years in the Italy Mission: A Criticism of Missionary Methods The time has fully come for the Church Of Christ to rectify two mistakes which she has for some time been making in connection with this work. In the first place, she should resolutely and honestly look failure full in the face, and not for a moment shrink from'it or pretend that she does not know that it exists when it Is In plain sight before her. It is always wise to know the worst, and nothing is ever gained by concealing either from ourselves or others actual facts as they exist in Connection with any work for which we are responsible. It will be said, no doubt, that there is no real failure in the mission field. Some good men affirm that it is impossible for us to say that any Christian work is, or ever has been, a failure and we will be told over again for the thousandth time that we have nothing to do with the results, that it is our duty to work on and let God choose his own time for rewarding the labors of his Servants; and that success may be so near at hand that what seems defeat to-day will change into victory to-morrow. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Italy's Civilizing Mission in Africa Italy's occupation of the North Eastern Coast of Africa, so called Tripolitania and Cyrenaica, has opened up again that Oriental question which has been for centuries the unsolved problem of diplo macy, which has been also the field of the most terrible wars, massacres and exterminations that history could register in its fatal books. Such an event has been foreseen for years, and it is only due to the urgent reforms needed at home, more than to the ineptitude of the Government, that the occupation did not take place earlier. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Italy: With Maps 3. Theodoric, Lieutenant of the Emperor, 493-526. Like Odoacer, Theodoric conquered and ruled by a com. Mission from the Emperor, but the splendour and prosperity of his reign weakened the tie which bound Italy to the Emperor. Unlike Odoacer, he aimed at setting up a dynasty. He recognized his own people as the conquerors, and at the same time he impartially administered their own laws to the conquered Italians. Religious jealousy marred the happiness of his reign and the success of his plans. The Gothic rule was short-lived: the northern race was unsuited to a life of inactivity, and the scandals of the Court after the death of Theodoric greatly weakened the power of the East - Goths. Book Old Italian Masters Classic Reprint

Download or read book Old Italian Masters Classic Reprint written by Timothy Cole and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-17 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Italian Masters Like all revolutions, this became proscriptive - the Old Mas ters became the derision of every aspirant, and naturalism the only art. This also was excess, and is followed by reaction. Na ture will not teach art, and the exclusive pursuit of her indications can only lead to a simulacrum of art, in which the vital spirit of it can by no chance enter. Art is the expression of all the spiritual faculties of man, passion for beauty, aspiration of the imagination, the manifestation of the individual in his inmost nature. For this nature can only furnish an alphabet, types whose meaning only sympathy can unfold, and which become the language of art. The sense of the insufficiency of the so-called naturalistic art has brought those who craved the real art-influence to look back to the earlier schools, and the result has been that we have found again the springs of art and the true meaning of the desecrated word Ideal, the ivisible expression of which is the mission of art, z'. E., the individual conception of beauty taken in its largest sense, as what is most desirable and attractive in conceivable form - not to be confounded with the actual, and probably-never existing in nature. The Italian Renaissance was in no wise a re turn to nature as model, but a reawakening of the spiritual activity of the race after a torpor of ages, and which demanded the means of expression of itself. As the religious passion was dominant in that phase of Italian development, the religious motive was that which caught the inspiration; but this was incidental - the essen tial fact was that the art was not an appeal to nature but a form of poetic speech, the telling of a spiritual truth, not the rela tion of a natural phenomenon or fact. It was the poet, not the scientist, that appeared. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Voice From Italy: Being Notices of Evangelical Work in That Country; August, 1880 MY dear s1r, - I am thankful to God, who in His good Provi dence having sent me to America for the interest of our mission in Italy, has permitted me to see so many excellent Christian friends, who have given us their pecuniary help and their earnest prayers. When I returned to my ock in Milan, my friends were so kind as to give me a hearty reception. The first Sabbath I found owers in my pulpit, an excellent choir organised for my reception, a silver communion service as a gift to me for the use of the church, and the congregation addressed me by the mouth of my friend, Rev. Longo. It is precisely the kind of reception I saw the congregation of Dr Gibson giving to him when he returned back from Europe to Chicago in September last.
