Book The Neurospora Compendium

Download or read book The Neurospora Compendium written by David D. Perkins and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2000-10-11 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fungi have been major players in the molecular revolution that has transformed biology. Because they can be manipulated as microorganisms, yeast and Neurospora provide information that is difficult to acquire with plants and animals, and experimental findings with fungi often throw light on corresponding processes in plants and animals. The filamentous fungus Neurospora crassa has become a valuable model organism because of its favorable features for genetic analysis and because of the vast store of information that has been acquired during 75 years of research. This compendium provides researchers and students with a concise account of current knowledge about the genes and genome of Neurospora, setting the stage for research that will follow completion of the genome sequence. This book, which is fully documented and abundantly illustrated, will be an indispensable tool in any laboratory that uses fungi for research in molecular genetics, classical genetics, developmental genetics, or cell biology. - Molecular, genetic, and phenotypic information for over 1000 nuclear genes - Genetic maps - Linkage group assignments for 1000 loci - 2300 references, 68 figures - Guide to electronic and other sources of information - Summary information on the mitochondrial genome - cDNAs identified from different stages of life - Classical, cytogenetic, and molecular data, anticipating completion of the genome sequence

  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2000-08-17
  • ISBN : 9780198028574
  • Pages : 352 pages

Download or read book Neurospora written by Rowland H. Davis and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2000-08-17 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will serve as the definitive reference work on the basic physiology, biochemistry, development, genetics, and molecular biology of Neurospora, together with a description of basic laboratory methods. Among the filamentous fungi, Neurospora is a basic model organism, used initially in the establishment of the one-gene, one-enzyme principle, and it has become a favored research organism in a variety of biological problems since that time. Until now, there has been no standard guide to the organism. The book reviews early research since 1927 and describes the current state of the major research programs now being pursued. Each chapter includes detailed literature references for the scholar and experimentalist. Both researchers in the filamentous fungi and biologists requiring information about Neurospora will find this an invaluable resource because it gathers 75 years of scattered research literature into a coherent account.

Book DNA Repair and Mutagenesis in Eukaryotes

Download or read book DNA Repair and Mutagenesis in Eukaryotes written by W. Generoso and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not many years ago most discussion of mutation induction by physical and chemical agents concentrated on the initial lesions induced in the DNA with the implicit assumption that once the lesions were made they were converted almost automatically to mutations by relatively simple processes associated with DNA replication. The discovery of a variety of enzymatic processes that can repair these lesions, the great increase in our understanding of the molecular steps involved in repair, replication, and recombination, and the increasing availability of cells with genetic defects in these pro cesses have led to the realization that mutation induction is a far more complex process than we originally thought. Repair systems can remove lesions before they can be converted to mutation, they can also convert initial lesions to secondary ones that are them selves mutagenic, and they can remove potentially lethal lesions at the expense of making mutations. The error-avoiding systems asso ciated with replication are themselves complex and may be caused to make mistakes in various ways. These different pathways for mutation production and mutation avoidance are still being worked out in prokaryotes and are less well understood in eukaryotes. This symposium shows, however, that very encouraging progress has been made in the last several years, and the progress is now accelerating.

Book Algae Abstracts

  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-11-11
  • ISBN : 1475704208
  • Pages : 698 pages

Download or read book Algae Abstracts written by Office of Water Resources Research Staff and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 698 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aigae Abstracts is the first in aseries of bibliographies on water re sources and pollution published by IFI/Plenum Data Corporation in cooperation with the Water Resources Scientific Information Center (WRSIC). It is produced wholly from the information base compris ing material abstracted and indexed for Selected Water Resources Abstracts. The bibliography is divided into volumes according to the publication dates of the source documents. Volume 1 contains 569 abstracts cov ering publication dates up to and including 1969; Volume 2 contains 730 abstracts covering the years 1970 to 1972. The material included in this bibliography represents computer selections based on the presence of a form of the word "alga" somewhere in the referenced citation. Substantively, the material typifies WRSIC's "centers of com petence" approach to information support of the Office of Water Re sources Research (OWRR) of the Department of the Interior. Most of the references in this bibliography are the work of the center of competence on eutrophication at the University of Wisconsin. The indexes refer to the WRSIC accession number, which follows each abstract. The Significant Descriptor Index is made up of a fraction of the total descriptors and identifiers by which each paper has been indexed. It represents weighted terms that best describe the informa tion content; this status is indicated by the asterisks which precede them. The General Index includes all the remaining descriptors and identifiers by which each paper in this bibliography has been indexed.
