Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Isle of Dreams But to write of Iona, there are many ways of approach. N 0 place that has a spiritual history can, to those who know nothing of it, be revealed by facts and descriptions. The approach may be through the obscure glens of another's mind and so out by the moonlit way, as well as by the track that thousands travel. I have nothing to say here of Iona's acreage, or fisheries, or pastures: nothing of how the islanders live. These things are the accidental. There is small difference in simple life anywhere. Moreover, there are many to tell all that need be known. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Book of Cambridge Verse Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Book of Cambridge Verse Classic Reprint written by Ernest Edward Kellett and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2016-11-23 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. In this day and generation, when military dramas of every description are welcomed by the applause of eager and enthusiastic audiences, it would seem as though an increasing demand had sprung up for tales of military life, and none are more popular than those which deal with our own Blue Coats upon the Border, - the guardians of our Indian frontier. Download or read book The Isle of Unrest Classic Reprint written by Henry Seton Merriman and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Isle of Unrest "The Moving Finger writes; and, having writ, Moves on: nor all thy piety nor wit Shall lure it back to cancel half a line, Nor all thy tears wash out a word of it." The afternoon sun was lowering toward a heavy bank of clouds hanging still and sullen, over the Mediterranean. A mistral was blowing. The last yellow rays shone fiercely upon the towering coast of Corsica, and the windows of the village of Olmeta glittered like gold. There are two Olmetas in Corsica, both in the north, both on the west coast, both perched high like an eagles nest, both looking down upon those lashed waters of the Mediterranean, which are not the waters that poets sing of, for they are as often white as they are blue; they are seldom glassy except in the height of summer, and sailors tell that they are as treacherous as any waters of the earth. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Queen of the Isle: A Novel Sometimes during the summer, pleasure parties were held here, but in the winter all was silent and dreary on the lonely, isolated little spot. This island had been, from time immemorial, in the possession of a family named Campbell, handed down from father to son. The people of the surrounding coun try had learned to look upon them as the rightful lords of the soil, to the manner born. The means by which it had first come into their possession were seldom thought of, or if thought of, only added to their reputa tion as a bold and daring race. The legend ran, that long before Calvert came over, a certain Sir Guy Camp bell, a celebrated freebooter and scion of the noble Scot tish clan of that name, who for some reckless crime had been outlawed and banished, and in revenge had hoisted the black flag and become a rover on the high seas, had, in his wanderings, discovered this solitary island, which he made the place of his rendezvous. Here, with his band of dare-devils - all outlaws like himself - he held many a jolly carousal that made the old woods ring. In one of his adventures he had taken captive a young Spanish girl, whose wondrous beauty at once conquered a heart all unused to the tender passion. He bore 03 his prize in triumph, and without asking her consent, made her his wife at the first port he touched. Soon, however, tiring of her company on shipboard, he brought her to his island home, and their left her to occupy his castle, while he sailed merrily away. One year afterward, Sir Guy the Fearless, as he was called, was conquered by an English sloop-oi-war; and, true to his daring character, he blew up the vessel, and, together with his crew and captors, perished in the explosion.
