Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Irish Ecclesiastical Record, Vol. 11: A Monthly Journal, Under Episcopal Sanction; January to June, 1902 The materials for the following article are derived largely, though not exclusively, from the two books just mentioned. Both are well worth reading; but the palm must be given to Lord St. Cyres for his knowledge of his subject and for the truly Catholic spirit in which be generally writes. Miss Sanders is frankly Protestant, and has no pretension to any familiarity with Catholic doctrines and practices.' Nevertheless she writes with an ease and grace which are decidedly lacking in Lord St. Cyres' learned volume. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Irish Ecclesiastical Record, Vol. 6: October, 1869 In our next number we shall consider whether the educa tion imparted by these Protestant teachers, and under the direction of these Protestant authorities, even as shown by Rev. Mr. Mahaffy, is fit for Catholic youth, and whether the modifications he and his friends suggest, or, indeed, any modifications of such an institution, as a place of education, can make it satisfactory to Catholics, or establish within its halls the great principle of educational equality. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Irish Ecclesiastical Record, Vol. 15: January, 1894 Now here is practically the same statement given by our two most ancient and perfectly independent authorities one written in Latin, and the other in Gaelic; and the substance of that statement is: first, that St. Patrick, feeling his end approaching, wished to return to Armagh, the city of his love, that he might die there; secondly, that, instead, he was commanded to return to Saul, which shows that he was already on the road for Armagh; thirdly, that he died at Saul; and, fourthly, that he was buried not there, but some two miles distant at Dun-da-leth-glaisse, or Downpatrick. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Irish Ecclesiastical Record, Vol. 6: A Monthly Journal, Under Episcopal Sanction; July to December, 1899 It is unnecessary to insist upon the importance of the devotion to the Sacred Heart, or upon the advantages to be derived from it. These are topics familiar to the readers of the I. E, Record, topics upon which they have to address their congregations not infrequently. But, I believe, it is not too much to say, that the Sacred Heart of Jesus occupies, perhaps, the most important place among recent devotional and doctrinal developments in the Church of God. The question naturally presents itself. How far is this modern devotion foreshadowed in the writings of an earlier period, or founded in the Christian sentiment of past ages? And, above all, we are naturally moved to ask, How far is this devotion supported by the language of Scripture? The first of these questions is too wide to admit of discussion at present; but a few observations may at least be made as to the mode of conducting such an inquiry.
