Book The Inverse Problem of the Linearized Theory of Fully cavitating Hydrofoils

Download or read book The Inverse Problem of the Linearized Theory of Fully cavitating Hydrofoils written by Blaine Raphael Parkin and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the basic theory and some numerical results on the inverse problem for fullycavitating hydrofoils. The problem is treated by the twodimensional linearized theory of steady cavity flows. The problem of optimum hydrodynamic design of cavitating blades or foils is explored and the conditions required to insure realistic cavity flows are examined. As a result of these considerations three methods for profile design are put forward. Two of these methods are treated numerically. It is found that once the pressure distribution has been prescribed, the shape of the profile depends upon the design cavitation number. The camber decreases as the cavitation number increases. This report does not discuss the numerical methods used in the study. They are given separate documentation in AD-606 062. (Author).

Book A Nonlinear Theory for Fully Cavitating Flows Past an Inclined Flat Plate

Download or read book A Nonlinear Theory for Fully Cavitating Flows Past an Inclined Flat Plate written by Stanford University. Department of Civil Engineering and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work considers a three-part sequence of problems in fully-cavitating flow theory which have practical applications in the design of hydrofoil vessels. In each problem a two-dimensional, inviscid, incompressible, irrotational flow is assumed. Results in each case include expressions for the physical-plane configuration and the lift and drag coefficients; they are developed by using conformal mapping and the solution to a Riemann-Hilbert mixed-boundary-value problem in an auxiliary half plane. The first part develops a nonlinear solution for a flat plate in an infinite flow field with gravity neglected. The remaining two parts are extensions of part one to consider in one case the effect of a free surface above the hydrofoil, and in the other case, the effect of a transverse gravity field on the initial problem. The use of a digital computer to perform numerical integrations is a feature common to the solution of all three problems. The solution to the gravity-affected case was found from the nongravity solution via a rapidly convergent iteration process. The results in each case agree well with other nonlinear and linear solutions. (Author).

Book Cambered Bodies in Cavitating Flow a Nonlinear Analysis and Design Procedure

Download or read book Cambered Bodies in Cavitating Flow a Nonlinear Analysis and Design Procedure written by Stanford University. Department of Civil Engineering and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A nonlinear method is given for the description, in terms of nonphysical parameters, of fully cavitating cambered bodies in two-dimensional flow. The method, based on complex function theory and the spiral-vortex cavity model, permits a quasi-optimum design of certain classes of hydrofoils. Details of the procedure and means for its extension to other cambered bodies are described. (Author).

Book Numerical Methods and Program Description for the Inverse Problem of Lineearized Fullycavitatattating Hydrofoil Theory

Download or read book Numerical Methods and Program Description for the Inverse Problem of Lineearized Fullycavitatattating Hydrofoil Theory written by R. S. Grote and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Memorandum documents the numerical methods used in and the computer program written for a recent study of fully-cavitating hydrofoils, as reported in a companion Memorandum (RM-3566-PR). The computer routines have been devised to calculate the profile shapes for two design methods and an off-design consideration of the problem. The present report briefly discusses each of the three methods, and proceeds to detailed presentations of the corresponding subroutines. The three methods encompass the cases of shockless-entry, nose-singularity, and the off-design calculations; their respective subroutines are entitled SECT3, SECT4, and SECT5. Various subsidiary subprograms are presented, together with a complete program listing. The program is written in FORTRAN II for the IBM 7090. An index to the subroutines and subprograms as discussed in the text and as presented in the listing (which is contained in the appendix) is provided. (Author).

Book A Third Procedure for Linearized Fully Cavitating Hydrofoil Section Design

Download or read book A Third Procedure for Linearized Fully Cavitating Hydrofoil Section Design written by B. R. Parkin and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third design procedure for fully cavitating hydrofoils is based upon a linearized inverse theory of two-dimensional cavity flows at arbitrary cavitation number. The cavity surfaces are assumed to originate at the leading and trailing edges of the wetted surface. This report reviews and completes the basic theory and gives detailed examples obtained from the resulting parametric design technique. In the third design procedure, one specifies the design lift coefficient, the cavitation number and the upper cavity thickness at two points along the profile chord. A prescribed pressure distribution shape is also selected. The method also includes off-design calculations in accordance with the direct linearized theory of cavity flows which determines the flow states for which interference can occur between the upper surface of the cavity and the upper nonwetted surface of the profile. The hydrodynamic performance of specific point designs is also given by these direct calculations. The chief new feature of the third design procedure is the ability of the designer to prescribe two points on the cavity surface instead of one as heretofore.
