Book The Secret History of Home Economics How Trailblazing Women Harnessed the Power of Home and Changed the Way We Live

Download or read book The Secret History of Home Economics How Trailblazing Women Harnessed the Power of Home and Changed the Way We Live written by Danielle Dreilinger and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2021-05-04 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The surprising, often fiercely feminist, always fascinating, yet barely known, history of home economics. The term “home economics” may conjure traumatic memories of lopsided hand-sewn pillows or sunken muffins. But common conception obscures the story of the revolutionary science of better living. The field exploded opportunities for women in the twentieth century by reducing domestic work and providing jobs as professors, engineers, chemists, and businesspeople. And it has something to teach us today. In the surprising, often fiercely feminist and always fascinating The Secret History of Home Economics, Danielle Dreilinger traces the field’s history from Black colleges to Eleanor Roosevelt to Okinawa, from a Betty Crocker brigade to DIY techies. These women—and they were mostly women—became chemists and marketers, studied nutrition, health, and exercise, tested parachutes, created astronaut food, and took bold steps in childhood development and education. Home economics followed the currents of American culture even as it shaped them. Dreilinger brings forward the racism within the movement along with the strides taken by women of color who were influential leaders and innovators. She also looks at the personal lives of home economics’ women, as they chose to be single, share lives with other women, or try for egalitarian marriages. This groundbreaking and engaging history restores a denigrated subject to its rightful importance, as it reminds us that everyone should learn how to cook a meal, balance their account, and fight for a better world.

Book Suggestions for Introducing a Course of Study in Home Economics Into the Rural and Village Highschools of Ohio

Download or read book Suggestions for Introducing a Course of Study in Home Economics Into the Rural and Village Highschools of Ohio written by Ohio; Dept; Of Education and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-12 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Suggestions for Introducing a Course of Study in Home Economics Into the Rural and Village Highschools of Ohio The Purpose of Home Economics in the Curriculum The introducing of home economics into the curriculum of a small high school is a problem which is requiring special consideration on the part of superintendents, teachers, and the community. It is the purpose of this bulletin to set forth briefly some helpful suggestions for the carrying out of such a course of study. Before considering the details of this problem, it is well to have in mind the meaning of home economics, or a definite ideal to be reached by introducing such teaching into the school. Home economics has been defined by the American Home Economics Association as follows: home economics, as a distinctive subject of instruction, is a study of the economic, sanitary, and aesthetic aspects of food, clothing, and shelter as connected with their selection, preparation, and use by the family in the home or by other groups of people. It becomes a complicated problem, because it is made up of many composite occupations, such as the feeding, clothing and housing of the family, with relation to the social, hygienic, economical and aesthetic aspects oi life. Since it is known that 90% of all women enter the vocation of homemaking or become directors of homes, and the remaining lo A are responsible for some duties in the home, therefore the ideal to be reached by introducing such training is to train homemakers and to improve living conditions in the community. If this training is to function in the community and is given with the idea in mind to train girls for the vocation of homemaking, it should then be on the same plane as any other subject given in the curriculum, and the course of study and the placing of equipment should demonstrate this. The Teacher of Home Economics In order to carry out the ideals of this course, it will be necessary to have a teacher with training in the subject matter of home economics, related science and art, and non-related work, as well as practical experience in the management of a house. Unless the teacher has a broad vision of the field of homemaking, and its relation to the community, the course will not function. Four years of college training with 30-40%. home economics subjects, 20-25% related technical subjects, 12-15% professional subjects, 15-25% academic subjects is desirable. Book Rethinking Home Economics

Download or read book Rethinking Home Economics written by Sarah Stage and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-07-05 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until recently, historians tended to dismiss home economics as little more than a conspiracy to keep women in the kitchen. This landmark volume initiates collaboration among home economists, family and consumer science professionals, and women's historians. What knits the essays together is a willingness to revisit the subject of home economics with neither indictment nor apology. The volume includes significant new work that places home economics in the twentieth century within the context of the development of women's professions. Rethinking Home Economics documents the evolution of a profession from the home economics movement launched by Ellen Richards in the early twentieth century to the modern field renamed Family and Consumer Sciences in 1994. The essays in this volume show the range of activities pursued under the rubric of home economics, from dietetics and parenting, teaching and cooperative extension work, to test kitchen and product development. Exploration of the ways in which gender, race, and class influenced women's options in colleges and universities, hospitals, business, and industry, as well as government has provided a greater understanding of the obstacles women encountered and the strategies they used to gain legitimacy as the field developed.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Home Economics in Rural Schools Some rural districts have employed an itinerant teacher of home economics who gives instruction in five or more schools. In certain sections of the coun try, the county agents of the extension service have articulated their work with that of the rural schools and have thus been able to teach some home economics and some agriculture. The most satisfactory method of introducing home economics into the rural school curriculum has been by the maintenance of a hot supplemental lunch prepared and served by groups of the children. Book Rurality and Education

Download or read book Rurality and Education written by Barbara Pini and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-04-30 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book broadens the scope of the subject of rural education and enlivens the ways in which the subject may be studied. Through textual and visual analysis of a range of sources – including young adult novels, the farming simulation game ‘Hay Day’ and reality television programs – the contributors investigate how the lives of young people in rural spaces are mediated by a range of social locations including class, ethnicity and sexuality. Additionally, through rich and detailed ethnographic work, the book explores the complicated and multifaceted meanings of rural places and examines how these meanings shape experiences of schooling for teachers and students. In doing so, the book embeds the study of rural education in explorations of patrilineal inheritance on family farms, international migration, globalisation and economic restructuring. It aims to start a conversation about the robust and complex ways in which the confluence between ‘rural’ and ‘education’ may be imagined, experienced and researched. This book was originally published as a special issue of Discourse: Studies in the Cultural Politics of Education.

Book Rebuilding the Rural Southern Community

Download or read book Rebuilding the Rural Southern Community written by Mary S. Hoffschwelle and published by Univ. of Tennessee Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Mary Hoffschwelle shines a much-needed light on the efforts of rural reformers. She focuses on Tennessee because its varied geography and the large number of rural reform programs it hosted make it a particularly rich subject for study. Also, the state typified the burdens of poverty and racial division that characterized the South as a whole, and, as the author shows, such problems attracted considerable attention from reformers.
