Download or read book Meaning in History written by Karl Löwith and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2011-03-31 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern man sees with one eye of faith and one eye of reason. Consequently, his view of history is confused. For centuries, the history of the Western world has been viewed from the Christian or classical standpoint—from a deep faith in the Kingdom of God or a belief in recurrent and eternal life-cycles. The modern mind, however, is neither Christian nor pagan—and its interpretations of history are Christian in derivation and anti-Christian in result. To develop this theory, Karl Löwith—beginning with the more accessible philosophies of history in the nineteenth and eighteenth centuries and working back to the Bible—analyzes the writings of outstanding historians both in antiquity and in Christian times. "A book of distinction and great importance. . . . The author is a master of philosophical interpretation, and each of his terse and substantial chapters has the balance of a work of art."—Helmut Kuhn, Journal of Philosophy

Book Intention and Interpretation A Short History

Download or read book Intention and Interpretation A Short History written by Ralf Grüttemeier and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-02-07 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intention plays a complex role in human utterances. The interpretation of literary texts is a strong case in point: for about two hundred years there have been conflicting views about whether, and how much, authorial intention should matter when professional readers interpret literature. These debates grew increasingly fierce during the post-World War II period, the landmarks of which were the notions of intentional fallacy and the death of the author. Seventy-odd years later, there is still no consensus in sight. What has always been neglected in the debates around authorial intention, however, is a reflection on the historical dimension of the debate and how historically bound each of the theoretical positions in the debate were. This book focusses precisely on the historical dimension of authorial intention, providing a systematic historical reconstruction of the importance ascribed to it in literary texts from Classical Greece to the present day, and including a chapter on authorial intention in jurisdiction and legal interpretation from a historical perspective. The book reconstructs a typology of the most important concepts of intention in interpretation for diachronic and synchronic use. At the same time it offers insights from a field-theoretical perspective into how literary studies as a discipline works over time and how notions of intention and interpretation help create forms of literary knowledge.

Book Meaning and Representation in History

Download or read book Meaning and Representation in History written by Jörn Rüsen and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2006-08-01 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History has always been more than just the past. It involves a relationship between past and present, perceived, on the one hand, as a temporal chain of events and, on the other, symbolically as an interpretation that gives meaning to these events through varying cultural orientations, charging it with norms and values, hopes and fears. And it is memory that links the present to the past and therefore has to be seen as the most fundamental procedure of the human mind that constitutes history: memory and historical thinking are the door of the human mind to experience. At the same time, it transforms the past into a meaningful and sense bearing part of the present and beyond. It is these complex interrelationships that are the focus of the contributors to this volume, among them such distinguished scholars as Paul Ricoeur, Johan Galtung, Eberhard Lämmert, and James E. Young. Full of profound insights into human society pat and present it is a book that not only historians but also philosophers and social scientists should engage with.

Book New Insights in the History of Interpreting

Download or read book New Insights in the History of Interpreting written by Kayoko Takeda and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2016-03-10 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who mediated intercultural exchanges in 9th-century East Asia or in early voyages to the Americas? Did the Soviets or the Americans invent simultaneous interpreting equipment? How did the US government train its first Chinese interpreters? Why is it that Taiwanese interpreters were executed for Japanese war crimes? Bringing together papers from an international symposium held at Rikkyo University in 2014 along with two select pieces, this volume pursues such questions in an eclectic exploration of the practice of interpreting, the recruitment of interpreters, and the challenges interpreters have faced in diplomacy, colonization, religion, war, and occupation. It also introduces innovative use of photography, artifacts, personal journals, and fiction as tools for the historical study of interpreters and interpreting. Targeted at practitioners, scholars, and students of interpreting, translation, and history, the new insights presented in the ten original articles aim to spark discussion and research on the vital roles interpreters have played in intercultural communication through history. Book The Interpretation of History Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Interpretation of History Classic Reprint written by Max Nordau and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Interpretation of History The confusion almost everywhere prevalent between history and the writing of history will be firmly avoided in the course of the subsequent inquiry. The philosophy of history, even in the hands of its most distinguished exponents, has tended far too much to identify the object of description and the description itself. There is something almost ludicrous in the unconscious arrogance of this. The lordly declaration of the historian, "History is that portion of the world's story which is established by tradition and recorded in written history," is prompted by the confident self-importance of the bureaucrat, who cries, "quod non est in actis, non est in mundo!" It includes various examples of difficult knowledge, detailed examples of specific interpretation methods, and will give readers an in-depth explanation of the psychoanalytic educational theories behind the methodologies.
