Book excerpt: A study was conducted to design an experimental flight test program for the Total In-Flight Simulator CTIFS) directed toward the interface between flying qualities requirements and flight control system design criteria. The eventual goal is to provide an interpretation or translation of flying qualities requirements for use by the flight control system designer. Specifically, an angle of attack and pitch rate command system matrix involving both short term and long term dynamics are specified for evaluation. A major objective of the research was to demonstrate that flying qualities criteria and flight control system configuration or architecture can be independent. Finally, additional configurations are proposed to evaluate the efficacy of dynamic decoupling.

Book excerpt: Revisitation and extension of classical sampled data approaches for the analysis of discretely controlled continuous systems is the focus of this report. A review of basic linear analysis topics required to support later developments is given. These topics include Laplace, z- and advanced z-transform facts; partial fraction expansion; data holds and the switch decomposition technique. Extension of switch decomposition for the vector signal case is given. A new direct transform domain approach for analyzing two-rate sampled systems is developed. This approach also applies for multi-rate sampled systems in restricted circumstances. Utility of this approach resides in its operator notation and conventions for manipulation in connection with vector block diagram algebra. This, in turn, expedites development of pulse transfer functions and of response recursion relations for multivariable, closed-loop systems. This is accomplished without resorting to the more complicated switch decomposition method. Multi-rate sampling analysis procedures are used to sharpen the concept of 'frequency response' for discretely excited, continuous systems. All methods of analysis presented in this report are closed-form and exact in that no approximation is required in the mathematical development of any result.

Increasingly these aircraft are designed with performance considerations only and sophisticated flight control systems are required to correct a host of handling qualities deficiencies. Today's complex control systems are comprised of various elements, washout filters, prefilters, sensors, electronic compensators and structural filters, in full authority fly-by-wire systems. The purpose of this course is to provide a fundamental understanding of the basic types of aircraft control strategies. Simple mechanical systems are presented including the effect of control system elements, such as actuators, artificial feel systems, and mechanical elements. Stability and control augmentation systems are then discussed, stressing the advantages and disadvantages of each type of feedback commonly used. Electronic compensators are studied as further refinements to the augmented system. Modern analog and digital electronic flight control systems are then analyzed to gain an appreciation for their operation and potential handling qualities deficiencies. In addition, automatic flight control systems are discussed including both autopilots and the more sophisticated integrated systems for automated maneuvering. Aircraft sensors used in most of these flight control systems are also analyzed. Finally, flight control system test techniques are presented.

Central to such judgement, and to the design of suitable aircraft plus flight control systems, is an understanding of what the pilot can do with ease and comfort or conversely what bothers him. The Lectures are designed to impart such understanding to both novice and seasoned practioners in flying qualities and flight control and thereby to provide the bridge required to extend flying qualities requirements from simple classic response aircraft, to the responses attending the use of full-time active control. It also provides a unifying connection among the empirically derived flying qualities requirements of different aircraft types, e.g. fixed and rotary wing. Mathematical models of pilot control behavior are explained. For purposes of ready and universal characterization, the aircraft plus flight control system (plus displays if applicable), is approximately matched by a lower order equivalent system of sufficient bandwidth to be indicative of the pilot's concerns. Some of the pitfalls and benefits of using flight simulators for flight control system development and flying qualities research are exposed and clarified. Book excerpt: The effects of control system dynamics on the longitudinal flying qualities of fighter airplanes were investigated in flight, using the USAF/CAL variable stability T-33 airplane. Two pilots evaluated a total of 57 different combinations of control system and short-period dynamics at two flight conditions, while performing tasks representative of the 'combat' phase of a fighter's mission. The pilot rating and comment data from this investigation indicate that the dynamic modes of the flight control system can cause serious flying qualities problems, even if the short-period mode is well behaved. The data do not correlate with the control system requirements of MIL-F-8785B. In addition, the data demonstrate that the C* criterion does not adequately account for the effects of control system dynamics. Pilot-in-the-loop analysis of the data is shown to describe effectively the pilot's difficulties in control of pitch attitude, providing insight into how the pilot flies the airplane. A design criterion, based on this analysis, is shown to be applicable to a wide range of short-period and control system dynamics. A simplified version is also presented to provide the designer with preliminary estimates of flying qualities.
