Book AMERICA People Policy and College Life As an International Student

Download or read book AMERICA People Policy and College Life As an International Student written by Manish Khadka and published by . This book was released on 2018-07-07 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I came to the United States as an international student in 2010 and graduated with a bachelor's in Accounting and Business. With the help of people and resources around me, I understood the essence of the professional experience, networking, good academics and communication skills early on during college and landed a job at a leading professional services firm, PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) LLP, consistently ranked as the top accounting company globally. More importantly, this understanding of the various dimensions of college life allowed me to gain a holistic experience and build a foundation for a long-term personal, social and professional success. During college, I had many domestic and international students as mentors who assisted me along the way and answered questions on the various aspects of college life including: Which campus organizations to participate?  How to invest as an international student? What is an OPT, H-1b work-visa?  What is a credit score?  What skills can improve my chances to land an internship as an International student? However, there were numerous times when I examined countless forums, articles, and websites to get information on any one topic pertinent to foreign students. At these instances, I wished for a single source tailored towards international students that assembled info on the various aspects of college stretching from academics and personal finance to professional and social life. Most of us will agree that the lack of relevant information should be the last thing limiting any (international or domestic) student from reaching their full potential. Thus, my major objective for writing this book is to assure that international students are well informed about the different facets of college-life ranging from finding an internship, acknowledging the importance of networking, communication and writing skills to the significance of credit scores and the overall personal financial management. Moreover, this book also discusses the government policies relating to international students in the US, including the OPT extension and the H-1B work-visa process. Universities and colleges will inform students on such policies during orientation or through a website, but it is also useful to have the pertinent information readily available for any future reference. Furthermore, I have included a brief chapter to share some of my personal anecdotes of living in the American community and why America is among the best places for anyone seeking an overall educational journey. For some young adults, it is easy to be influenced by few cynical stories on the news about immigration and other related policies. So, in order to give a broader and a fairer perspective of an international student's experience in the American community, I have shared few personal narratives that directly touches the core values of the American society- diversity, generosity, and compassion- that many of you will experience firsthand. In conclusion, the book is structured into two sections: first, where I provide you my observation of America as an international student and the information on policies relating to college students on an F-1 student visa. Then, we will cover the different aspects of college life, where we will talk in detail about the social, academic, professional and personal finance outlooks as an international student. So, let's begin this journey!

This book was released on 2014-01-01 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coming to the United States for the first time, as an international student, can be quite exciting. Yet, the journey from the country of origin often has significant perils. They often range from the mundane: a missed flight, a plane that needs minor - or major - repairs, going to the wrong gate, needing an airport transit visa and not having one. They stretch into getting delayed at Passport Control to lost luggage, having no quarters to make a phone call to the student's pick-up person who is waiting at the Cell Phone lot outside, to major issues such as weather delays which can strand a student at the airport for days, or to the seemingly innocous decision to leave the country of origin on a Thursday, getting to the US on Friday after 5 p.m. and finding that the campus is closed. This is the first comprehensive guide that lists the step-by-step planning process - including those things that an international student often does not consider - as they make the perilous journey into the United States. The Guide walks a student from their home airport, through Passport Control, Customs and Border Protection entry procedures, ground transportation, private and public transportation, to the destination. It guides a student through the reporting and registration process, finding accommodation, getting integrated into the school and local community and finally, to returning to the country of origin. International Students coming to the United States - and going to many other countries - will find this guide quite helpful in assisting them plan for their difficult journey into the United States.
