Book excerpt: Why is one person a believer and another an atheist? Why does one person demand facts for verification, while another trusts feelings? Why are some who hear voices declared psychotic while others are called saints? The answers to these questions are not mere speculation or amusing distraction; rather they are the essential components in developing curiosity, open-mindedness and tolerance for differences. Meaning in Myth speaks to the various ways in which we all construct our myth, or life story, from our very personal ways of thinking, evaluating , judging, and ignoring. It is nothing less than an invitation to encounter other viewpoints, other faiths and disbeliefs, and ultimately ourselves.

Book Developments in Australian Buddhism

Download or read book Developments in Australian Buddhism written by Michelle Spuler and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-04 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the adaptation of Buddhism to the Australian sociocultural context. To gain insight into this process of cross-cultural adaptation, issues arising in the development of Diamond Sangha Zen Buddhist groups (one of the largest Zen lineages in the West) in Australia are contextualised within the broader framework of the adaptations of Buddhist teachings and practices in other Westernised countries. The book also examines the methodological approaches currently used for studying this process and suggests a synthesis of the approaches used for studying convert and ethnic Buddhist groups.

Book The American Encounter with Buddhism 1844 1912

Download or read book The American Encounter with Buddhism 1844 1912 written by Thomas A. Tweed and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2005-10-12 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this landmark work, Thomas Tweed examines nineteenth-century America's encounter with one of the world's major religions. Exploring the debates about Buddhism that followed upon its introduction in this country, Tweed shows what happened when the transplanted religious movement came into contact with America's established culture and fundamentally different Protestant tradition. The book, first published in 1992, traces the efforts of various American interpreters to make sense of Buddhism in Western terms. Tweed demonstrates that while many of those interested in Buddhism considered themselves dissenters from American culture, they did not abandon some of the basic values they shared with their fellow Victorians. In the end, the Victorian understanding of Buddhism, even for its most enthusiastic proponents, was significantly shaped by the prevailing culture. Although Buddhism attracted much attention, it ultimately failed to build enduring institutions or gain significant numbers of adherents in the nineteenth century. Not until the following century did a cultural environment more conducive to Buddhism's taking root in America develop. In a new preface, Tweed addresses Buddhism's growing influence in contemporary American culture.

Book Global Visioning

Download or read book Global Visioning written by Ahmed Abaddi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume makes the case for global visioning: the collective process of looking at a larger picture and building common ground for the future. The contributors agree that only by such a process will people be able to address mounting problems like global warming, war, terrorism, and poverty, which threaten the Earth's population. This latest volume in the Peace & Policy series addresses three main themes. "On Spirituality and Ethics" advocates an international culture of nonviolence. "International and Transnational Relations" makes a case for global fellowship. "On Education and Culture" argues that educating children is the first step in reforming the world. The contributors seek solutions to the question of how people can start seeing issues from a global point of view, rather than from narrow national perspectives. In keeping with the global nature and scope of the world's problems, the contributions come from very diverse countries, including Japan, Morocco, South Africa, Germany, Italy, Belgium, and the United States. This work will inspire participation in this much-needed exercise of collective global problem solving.

Book Living Buddhism

    Book Details:
  • Author : Julia Cassaniti
  • Publisher : Cornell University Press
  • Release : 2015-12-18
  • ISBN : 1501700979
  • Pages : 232 pages

Download or read book Living Buddhism written by Julia Cassaniti and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-18 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Living Buddhism, Julia Cassaniti explores Buddhist ideas of impermanence, nonattachment, and intention as they are translated into everyday practice in contemporary Thailand. Although most lay people find these philosophical concepts difficult to grasp, Cassaniti shows that people do in fact make an effort to comprehend them and integrate them as guides for their everyday lives. In doing so, she makes a convincing case that complex philosophical concepts are not the sole property of religious specialists and that ordinary lay Buddhists find in them a means for dealing with life's difficulties. More broadly, the book speaks to the ways that culturally informed ideas are part of the psychological processes that we all use to make sense of the world around us.In an approachable first-person narrative style that combines interview and participant-observation material gathered over the course of two years in the community, Cassaniti shows how Buddhist ideas are understood, interrelated, and reinforced through secular and religious practices in everyday life. She compares the emotional experiences of Buddhist villagers with religious and cultural practices in a nearby Christian village. Living Buddhism highlights the importance of change, calmness (as captured in the Thai phrase jai yen, or a cool heart), and karma; Cassaniti's narrative untangles the Thai villagers' feelings and problems and the solutions they seek.
