Book Saracens and Franks in 12th 15th Century European and Near Eastern Literature

Download or read book Saracens and Franks in 12th 15th Century European and Near Eastern Literature written by Aman Y. Nadhiri and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-06-10 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Saracens and Franks in 12th - 15th Century European and Near Eastern Literature examines the tension between two competing discourses in the medieval Muslim Mediterranean and medieval Christian Europe: one rooted in the desire to understand the world and one's place in it, and another promoting an ethnocentric narrative. To this end, it examines the construction of an image of the Other for Muslims in the Eastern Mediterranean and for Christians in Western Europe in works of literature, particularly in the works produced in the centuries preceding the Crusades; and it explores the ways in which both Muslim and Christian writers depicted the Enemy in historical accounts of the Crusades. The author focuses on medieval works of ethnography and geography, travel literature, Muslim and Christian accounts of the Crusades, and the romances of Western Europe to trace the evolution of the image of the Eastern Mediterranean Muslim in medieval Western Europe and the Western European Christian in the medieval Muslim world, first to understand the construct in the respective scholarly communities, and then to analyze the ways in which this conception informs subsequent works of non-fiction and fiction (in the Western European context) in which this Muslim or Christian Other plays a prominent role. In its analysis of the medieval Mediterranean Muslim and European Christian approaches to difference, this book interrogates the premises underlying the concept of the Other, challenging formulations of binary opposition such as the West versus Islam/Muslims.

Book Democratic Transition and Human Rights

Download or read book Democratic Transition and Human Rights written by Sara Steinmetz and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1994-05-24 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes U.S. foreign policy in relation to human rights and democratic development abroad. Its purpose is to determine if, and how, human rights policies, or their neglect, have led to Realpolitik successes for the United States. In addition, it addresses the issue of how Washington might best respond to challenges in which a choice apparently must be made between support for democracy and preservation of U.S. national interests. Through a comparative analysis of Iran under the Shah, Nicaragua under the Somozas, and the Philippines under Marcos, Steinmetz evaluates the effectiveness of American priorities in authoritarian states that were perceived to protect U.S. interests. Rejecting the policy prescriptions of the neoconservative and neorealist schools, she concludes that protection of human rights abroad is desirable, not because of its moral implications per se, but because of its positive contributions to the preservation of U.S. national interests.

Against the backdrop of a changing society, the story focuses on the power of personal reconciliation between Northerners and Southerners in the early 1900s. The novel provides an in-depth look at the process of healing and the importance of understanding between different groups, rather than political posturing. The conversations between a Northerner and several Southerners provide insight into the challenges of rebuilding a fractured society, and offer a glimpse into the human spirit's ability to overcome even the most daunting of obstacles.
