It is divided into the three parts Speech coding and Segmentation, Word Recognition, and Linguistic Processing. Although this can only be a rough organization showing some overlap, the editors felt that it most naturally represents the bottom-up strategy of speech understanding and, therefore, should be useful for the reader. Part 1, SPEECH CODING AND SEGMENTATION, contains 4 invited and 14 contributed papers. The first invited paper summarizes basic properties of speech signals, reviews coding schemes, and describes a particular solution which guarantees high speech quality at low data rates. The second and third invited papers are concerned with acoustic-phonetic decoding. Techniques to integrate knowledge sources into speech recognition systems are presented and demonstrated by experimental systems. The fourth invited paper gives an overview of approaches for using prosodic knowledge in automatic speech recogni tion systems, and a method for assigning a stress score to every syllable in an utterance of German speech is reported in a contributed paper. A set of contributed papers treats the problem of automatic segmentation, and several authors successfully apply knowledge-based methods for interpreting speech signals and spectrograms. The last three papers investigate phonetic models, Markov models and fuzzy quantization techniques and provide a transi tion to Part 2 .

It is obvious that the computer can be a great help for this, especially when equipped with methods for automatically assessing the learner's pronunciation. While assessment of segmental pronunciation quality (i.,e. whether phones and words are pronounced correctly or not) is already available in commercial software packages, prosody (i.e. rhythm, word accent, etc.) is largely ignored--although it highly impacts intelligibility and listening effort. The present thesis contributes to closing this gap by developing and analyzing methods for automatically assessing the prosody of non-native speakers. We study the detection of word accent errors and the general assessment of the appropriateness of a speaker's rhythm. We propose a flexible, generic approach that is (a) very successful on these tasks, (b) competitive to other state-of-the-art result, and at the same time (c) flexible and easily adapted to new tasks.

Through four experiments on both production and perception of both melodic and temporal detail in Neapolitan Italian, we show that prosodic detail is not incompatible with abstractionist approaches either. Specifically, we suggest that the exploration of prosodic detail leads to a refined understanding of the relationships between the richly specified and continuous varying phonetic information on one side, and coarse phonologically structured contrasts on the other, thus offering insights on how pragmatic information is conveyed by prosody.

Book excerpt: This thesis studies the integration of phonetic landmarks into standard statistical large vocabulary continuous speech recognition (LVCSR). Landmarks are discrete time instances that indicate the presence of phonetic events in the speech signal. The goal is to develop landmark detectors that are motivated by phonetic knowledge in order to model selected phonetic classes more precisely than it is possible with standard acoustic models. The thesis presents two landmark detection approaches, which make use of segment-based information and studies two different methods to integrate landmarks into the decoding, which are landmark-based pruning and a weighted combination approach. While both approaches improve speech recognition performance compared to the baseline using weighted combination of landmarks and acoustic scores during decoding, they do not outperform standard frame-based phonetic predictions. Since these results indicate that landmark-driven LVCSR requires the integration of very heterogeneous information, the thesis presents a third integration framework that is designed to integrate an arbitrary number of heterogeneous and asynchronous landmark streams into LVCSR. The results indicate that this framework is indeed ale to improve the baseline system, as soon as landmarks provide complementary information to the regular acoustic models.
