Excerpt: ...which eliminate features that were deceptive, yet the Association is able to report that it closed the year 1897 with more paid for business than ever before in its history and with a larger premium income than ever before in its history. These are two of the essentials in the successful administration of a life insurance company. The results of last year's operations, as disclosed in the above figures, leave no doubt of the efficiency of those who are getting business for the Association, or who are managing its affairs. President Burnham's annual address is a very able discussion of the system of life insurance which the Mutual Reserve represents. His words should' carry conviction to the members of the Association that the permanency of the Association must depend upon exact justice between all the members. The price paid for insurance by each member must be measured by the exact cost to each member. That some of the older members have had their insurance for less than cost both friends and enemies of the Mutual Reserve are forced to admit. Mr. Burnham takes the stand that new members must not be compelled to pay the excess of cost on old members' policies. That is right and justice. Mr. Burnham sees clearly, and as clearly expresses it, the evil consequences of a contrary policy. The fact that new members are not taxed for the benefit of old members will make it possible to increase the membership and keep down the mortality rate, thus benefiting new and old members alike. But those members who contribute to the Association more than the immediate cost of their insurance, Mr. I'urnham declares, must not have their extra contributions diverted from the single object of taking care of their policies when the cost of insurance has...

Book People Power and Profits Progressive Capitalism for an Age of Discontent

Download or read book People Power and Profits Progressive Capitalism for an Age of Discontent written by Joseph E. Stiglitz and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2019-04-23 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Nobel prize winner challenges us to throw off the free market fundamentalists and reclaim our economy. We all have the sense that the American economy—and its government—tilts toward big business, but as Joseph E. Stiglitz explains in his new book, People, Power, and Profits, the situation is dire. A few corporations have come to dominate entire sectors of the economy, contributing to skyrocketing inequality and slow growth. This is how the financial industry has managed to write its own regulations, tech companies have accumulated reams of personal data with little oversight, and our government has negotiated trade deals that fail to represent the best interests of workers. Too many have made their wealth through exploitation of others rather than through wealth creation. If something isn’t done, new technologies may make matters worse, increasing inequality and unemployment. Stiglitz identifies the true sources of wealth and of increases in standards of living, based on learning, advances in science and technology, and the rule of law. He shows that the assault on the judiciary, universities, and the media undermines the very institutions that have long been the foundation of America’s economic might and its democracy. Helpless though we may feel today, we are far from powerless. In fact, the economic solutions are often quite clear. We need to exploit the benefits of markets while taming their excesses, making sure that markets work for us—the U.S. citizens—and not the other way around. If enough citizens rally behind the agenda for change outlined in this book, it may not be too late to create a progressive capitalism that will recreate a shared prosperity. Stiglitz shows how a middle-class life can once again be attainable by all. An authoritative account of the predictable dangers of free market fundamentalism and the foundations of progressive capitalism, People, Power, and Profits shows us an America in crisis, but also lights a path through this challenging time.

Book Guide to Financial Markets

Download or read book Guide to Financial Markets written by Marc Levinson and published by The Economist. This book was released on 2018-07-24 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The revised and updated 7th edition of this highly regarded book brings the reader right up to speed with the latest financial market developments, and provides a clear and incisive guide to a complex world that even those who work in it often find hard to understand. In chapters on the markets that deal with money, foreign exchange, equities, bonds, commodities, financial futures, options and other derivatives, the book examines why these markets exist, how they work, and who trades in them, and gives a run-down of the factors that affect prices and rates. Business history is littered with disasters that occurred because people involved their firms with financial instruments they didn't properly understand. If they had had this book they might have avoided their mistakes. For anyone wishing to understand financial markets, there is no better guide.

Book The Dismal Science

Download or read book The Dismal Science written by Stephen A. Marglin and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: See "Stephen Marglin on the Future of Capitalism" at FORA.tv. Economists celebrate the market as a device for regulating human interaction without acknowledging that their enthusiasm depends on a set of half-truths: that individuals are autonomous, self-interested, and rational calculators with unlimited wants and that the only community that matters is the nation-state. However, as Stephen Marglin argues, market relationships erode community. In the past, for example, when a farm family experienced a setback--say the barn burned down--neighbors pitched in. Now a farmer whose barn burns down turns, not to his neighbors, but to his insurance company. Insurance may be a more efficient way to organize resources than a community barn raising, but the deep social and human ties that are constitutive of community are weakened by the shift from reciprocity to market relations. Marglin dissects the ways in which the foundational assumptions of economics justify a world in which individuals are isolated from one another and social connections are impoverished as people define themselves in terms of how much they can afford to consume. Over the last four centuries, this economic ideology has become the dominant ideology in much of the world. Marglin presents an account of how this happened and an argument for righting the imbalance in our lives that this ideology has fostered.
