Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The True History of the Emma Mine I am a man of but moderate means, am in the employ of a large public company, and I am certainly not a speculator in the ordinary sense of the term; for, until I made this Emma investment, I had never touched a share either in a mining or any other joint stock speculation. In November, 1871, I had a little money to spare; and seeing a notice of the Emma Company in the press, I obtained a Prospectus, and became strongly impressed with the statements in it, vouched for as they were by the names of such men of high standing, and especially with that of General Schenck, the United States Minister. Being desirous of adding to my income in a legitimate way, I took such shares as were within my means, as a bond fidc investor. Book Comstock Mining and Miners Classic Reprint

Download or read book Comstock Mining and Miners Classic Reprint written by ELIOT. LORD and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Comstock Mining and Miners The monograph which I was instructed to prepare upon Comstock Mining and Miners is not a memoir of merely local importance and inter est, but the record of a struggle which has materially affected the mining interests Of the world. It is the story of the birth Of the silver-mining industry in this country, and it portrays as well the most Vigorous growth Of that industry. The simple narrative is, in truth, not less marvelous than an Arabian tale, recounting, as it does, how a handful of earth tossed away carelessly by a poor immigrant became the loadstone which drew a swarm of men to a desert avoided even by beasts, and how from this clue a thread Of gold was traced to its hidden source, and treasures rivaling the fancied store Of the young Aladdin were unveiled. Its scenes present the toil Of placer miners in an isolated canon, the search of prospectors for gold and silver, the discovery Of aworld-famous lode, the extraordinary migration called tersely the rush to Washoe, the life of a turbulent mining camp, and its ultimate crystallization into a thriving city. We shall follow him to the field of his labours, observe him in his subterranean life, and describe his habits in various countries; and as we would not only amuse, but instruct, we shall speak of the countries he inhabits, and of the substances he digs from the earth: in short, we shall endeavour to explain the social position of this pioneer of civilization. We our selves have long sojourned with him both in Europe and in America, and have made ourselves acquainted with the manly qualities which so eminently distinguish him. The first part of the present work is devoted to Coal, a substance indispensable to all civilized nations; the second to Metals, the origin of all progress; the last to the Precious Stones, which play so important a part in the decorative arts. Book Mining Schools in the United States Classic Reprint

Download or read book Mining Schools in the United States Classic Reprint written by John A. Church and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mining Schools in the United States Our own country presents to-day an example of the dependence of industry upon knowledge which is quite as remarkable as that given above. Commissioner Ross Browne, in his report on our Western mines, says that experienced investors in mining property will not pay for a mine more than two and a half times its yearly profit. That is to say, they do not consider it a safe investment unless it returns forty per cent. Upon its cost.* The reason of this is plain. With no means of educating miners to their work, the conduct of mines in this country is a lamentable story of mismanagement, energy wrongly directed, and consequent great losses. The thousand millions of gold dollars that have been won from the ground in California are but an inadequate representation of the real wealth that existed there.1' Observers have estimated the losses which were at first caused by ignorant and hasty methods of working at two thirds of the gold really at hand, and none have put them at less than one half. A better state of affairs has gradually grown up, but the losses to this day are very much larger than they should be. In California, however. Download or read book The Business of Mining Classic Reprint written by Walter Renton Ingalls and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Business of Mining The mistake that is most Often made in business is to suppose that we grow rich by taking riches from other men, or that nations prosper by depriving other nations of their prosperity. That would be true if Iiches consisted only Of money, and if there were just so much money and no more in the world. But that is not so. Nations grow rich, that is to say, get comfort, ease and luxury, only when other nations are growing rich too, only because other nations are growing rich. And so it is with individuals. Book Miners the Eight Hours Movement Classic Reprint

Download or read book Miners the Eight Hours Movement Classic Reprint written by Cornelius Macleod Percy and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-14 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Miners the Eight Hours Movement It is seldom that a Conference is held on which so much of really national importance hinges, as the representative assembly of Colliery Proprietors and Miners' Agents who met in London Jan. 21, to consider the proposal made by the men for an eight hours working day in mines. The proceedings were private, and the only knowledge furnished through the press is that the Conference was adjourned till February 11th. The question being one which affects the welfare of the public, it will be well to state not only what the proposal is, but to shew what the effect will be if it becomes law, and also to present the arguments for and against. It must be remembered that the proposal does not mean forty-eight working hours each week, but simply a maximum of eight hours in any one day. I venture to write upon the measure having been directly associated with mining operations an my daily life, and having been identified with large numbers of the more intelligent of the working miners during a 23 years evening lectureship at our School of Mines in the Mining County of Lancashire. Book Mining in the Pacific States of North America Classic Reprint

Download or read book Mining in the Pacific States of North America Classic Reprint written by John S. Hittell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-08 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mining in the Pacific States of North America This book is intended for the general reader, not for the special ist. I do not undertake to teach the quartz miner or the hydraulic miner anything new about his special branch of business, but I may tell something about the occupation of each to the other. My object has been to collect, arrange in a lucid manner, condense and set forth in a clear style, all the attainable information about the main points of our mining and mineral resources, so that the reader, who has never been in the mines, can easily form an intelligible idea of the chief industry of this coast. Specialists might desire more elab orate treatment of their various branches, but a thorough technical handling of geology, chemistry, metallurgy, mechanics, law, history and trade, in so far as they are connected with mining in California, would have required an encyclopedia. Besides, accurate informa tion on many points is not to be had, or can be obtained only by great expense. Book The Mine Vol 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Mine Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Charles Howard Shinn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-09 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mine, Vol. 2 There is a very strong reason in the nature of mines and miners for many of the delays in properly defin ing a claim. Every part of a ledge is not equally rich. Ore occurs in seams, chimneys, or chutes, and as soon as a man struck it rich his first thought was usually to explore it until he could select and stake out the best three hundred feet. Nearly all of the early locators on the Comstock were trying to get the richest slice in the lode, and they kept away from the recorder's office; or if they entered a claim, they took care to leave it in such shape that it could be altered, like some of the Spanish land grants of California that were floated ten or fifteen miles, much to the subsequent profit of attorneys. Even when the metes and bounds were well defined the guileless miners could not always be de pended upon to leave them so. One of the pioneers mentions a mining suit in which the matter hinged upon the location of a stump that marked the corner. Judge and jury adjourned and went to look at the stump. It had been dug up bodily during the night and carried off, and the ground was so levelled that not the slightest clew remained. Each side accused the other, and the case was never decided. All the American mining camps have maintained in the case of quartz ledges the right to an inclined location - that is, the right to take a claim of definite size and follow it downward at any angle or angles, taking all the ore in the vein and in its legitimate branches. A miner, according to this idea, takes up a piece of ground simply for the lode, and goes wherever it goes. Spanish mining law, on the contrary, recog nises only the square location. According to the Span ish plan, as soon as a ledge passes beyond the boundary of a square piece of ground of given size it belongs to the man in whose tract it lies. One can easily see that the Spanish system must prevent much trouble and render the single-vein problem immaterial. In fact, it rules out of court nine tenths of all the cases that lead to lawsuits. Matters rapidly went from bad to worse on the Comstock until the most casual oh server would have seen a wild Walpurgis-night revel of conflicting claims of every Size, shape, and age tum bling over each other three and four deep. It is hardly surprising, for the Comstock was not the only vein on the side of Mount Davidson, nor even the most prominent one. The Virginia lode was nearly parallel, and other veins, too' many to name and hardly worth while digging up from the dust of forgotten records.
