Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Chicago Housing Authority s Plan for Transformation repudiated the city s large-scale housing projects and the paradigm that produced them. The Plan seeks to normalize public housing and its tenants, eliminating physical, social, and economic barriers among populations that have long been segregated from one another. But is the Plan an ambitious example of urban regeneration or a not-so-veiled effort at gentrification? Is it resulting in integration or displacement? What kinds of communities are emerging from it? Chaskin and Joseph s book is the most thorough examination of the Plan to date. Drawing on five years of field research, in-depth interviews, and data, Chaskin and Joseph examine the actors, strategies, and processes involved in the Plan. Most important, they illuminate the Plan s limitations which has implications for urban regeneration strategies nationwide."

Book excerpt: There is only one of you, and everything about your appearance, your desires and your purpose is intentional. Before we were born, we each made a promise as to whom and what we would become on this earth. Encapsulated in your soul and hinted at during childhood, this Promise becomes more urgent as you age. Children express passionate emotions in every waking moment, but this passion is gradually buried under layers of expectations. You begin to call that passion a dream and create a life separate from your dream. Many of life's occurrences shine light into the soul's purpose: some are mystical; some part of everyday life; and some are traumatic. Your soul is revealed through telling your truth and recognizing when you are out of step with your real purpose. The difficulties we face as people on this planet have accelerated the urgency of recognizing our Promise.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Utilizing resources from Martin Luther and the Lutheran tradition, this study offers an understanding of the gospel as promise as key to addressing the challenge of relating the missio Dei to a generous, constructive approach toward the religious other. In its construction of a Lutheran missiology, it retrieves and reappropriates four resources from the Lutheran tradition: the gospel as promise, the law/gospel distinction, a theology of grace as promise of mercy fulfilled, and a theology of the cross utilizing the hiddenness of God. The law of God as accusing yet webbing humanity to its Creator; the gospel as the comforting promise of mercy; and the hiddenness of God as mystifying form the overarching framework within which the Lutheran missiology presented here seeks to engage the religious other by dialectically relating gospel proclamation and dialogue. Such a view of "mission shaped by promise" offers the paradox of God being both revealed and hidden in the cross as a distinctive contribution to an interreligious dialogue centered on the ambiguity and hiddenness of God.

Book The Promise of Artificial Intelligence

Download or read book The Promise of Artificial Intelligence written by Brian Cantwell Smith and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2019-10-08 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An argument that—despite dramatic advances in the field—artificial intelligence is nowhere near developing systems that are genuinely intelligent. In this provocative book, Brian Cantwell Smith argues that artificial intelligence is nowhere near developing systems that are genuinely intelligent. Second wave AI, machine learning, even visions of third-wave AI: none will lead to human-level intelligence and judgment, which have been honed over millennia. Recent advances in AI may be of epochal significance, but human intelligence is of a different order than even the most powerful calculative ability enabled by new computational capacities. Smith calls this AI ability “reckoning,” and argues that it does not lead to full human judgment—dispassionate, deliberative thought grounded in ethical commitment and responsible action. Taking judgment as the ultimate goal of intelligence, Smith examines the history of AI from its first-wave origins (“good old-fashioned AI,” or GOFAI) to such celebrated second-wave approaches as machine learning, paying particular attention to recent advances that have led to excitement, anxiety, and debate. He considers each AI technology's underlying assumptions, the conceptions of intelligence targeted at each stage, and the successes achieved so far. Smith unpacks the notion of intelligence itself—what sort humans have, and what sort AI aims at. Smith worries that, impressed by AI's reckoning prowess, we will shift our expectations of human intelligence. What we should do, he argues, is learn to use AI for the reckoning tasks at which it excels while we strengthen our commitment to judgment, ethics, and the world.

Simpson uses two Old Testament examples in The Land of Promise to show the Christian that the path to sanctification is invariably full of pitfalls and that the final journey is our worth the struggle to claim the inheritance. The Land of Promise both guides and gives hope for that which is yet to come for the Christian as A.B. Simpson helps us to understand the blueprint for our life of faith. A.B. Simpson uses The Land of Promise as an attempt to open the eyes of the follower to see that God has a whole plan for them for them already laid out. The church needs to understand that its eyes need opened. And that the Lord is to be asked for our full rights to redemption in Christ. Each chapter in the book The Land of Promise describes a phrase in the process of claiming our Christian heritage using Moses and Joshua as examples from their looking over to their entering into and taking possession of the land of Canaan. A.B. Simpson, once again uses metaphor and example of biblical imagery to take us into a heavenly discussion of sanctification.
