M. Méridier has studied the influence of the Second Sophistic upon St. Gregory of Nyssa; Guignet has studied St. Gregory of Nazianzus in his contacts with the contemporary rhetoric; Father Ameringer, out of the vast bulk of St. John Chrysostom, has traced the sophistic influence on the style of the panegyrical sermons of that orator. The following study aims to furnish such a paragraph in answer to M. Puech’s question as will result from a careful study of the style of the 46 sermons of St. Basil that are found in the Benedictine edition.

Book excerpt: The series seeks to contribute to the understanding of the variation and transmission of the New Testament by analyzing quotations of and allusions to passages of it in the work of Christian writers of Late Antiquity, many of which can be more precisely located both temporally and geographically than the earliest New Testament manuscripts. Racine (Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley) finds Basil (ca. 330-379) a valuable witness in that regard because he quotes abundantly and at length, apparently coping from a written text. A similar study has been conducted on his brother, Gregory of Nyssa (ca. 335-394), so the combination adds much to the knowledge of the New Testament text in use in Cappadocia during the fourth century. The study is slightly revised from his October 2000 Ph. D. dissertation for the University of St. Michael's College. Distributed by Aspen.
