Book The influence of surface films on mechanical properties

Download or read book The influence of surface films on mechanical properties written by Heinz G. F. Wilsdorf and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The variables that influence the mechanical behavior of metals covered with thin films have been enumerated. In particular, factors affecting dislocation glide in the surface region have been characterized in terms of image stresses taking into account both the free surface and the accommodation dislocation network at the substrate-film interface. A reduction of yield stress of 50% or more was measured on copper crystals electro-plated with 600 A films of nickel, gold or alpha-brass, all of which are epitaxial overgrowths. The complexity of the microstructure in the substrate-thin film composite has been described and the consequences on dislocation glide explored. An example of a system which exhibits an increase of the critical resolved yield stress, tau sub y, is given. Here, diffusion layers less than 1 micrometer thick caused tau sub y to increase by a factor of two, a consequence of the hindering of glide dislocations by accommodation dislocation networks.

Book Surfaces and Interfaces II

Download or read book Surfaces and Interfaces II written by John Burke and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center has conducted the Sagamore Army Materials Research Conferences, in cooperation with the Metallurgical Research Laboratories of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Metallurgy of Syracuse University, since 1954. The purpose of the conferences has been to gather together scientists and engineers from academic institutions, industry, and government who are uniquely qualified to explore in depth a subject of importance to the Army, the Department of Defense and the scientific corr.munity. This volume, Surfaces and Interfaces ll: Physical and Mechanical Properties, can be considered a continuation, or perhaps an extension, of the information contained in Surfaces and Interfaces I: Chemical and Physical Characteristics. The emphasis in this volume is focused on: the technological significance of surfaces and interfaces; surface sensitive mechanical properties; environment-sensitive properties; control of grain structure; and composite materials. It is felt that the rather ambitious undertaking of the program committee to place the role of "surfaces and interfaces" in its proper context has been achieved. The balance between basic research findings and more applied research allows the reader a certain degree of latitude in the use of the two volumes. The continued active interest and support of these conferences by Col. C. T. Riordan, Commanding Officer, Dr. E. Scala, Technical Di rector, and J. F. Sullivan, Deputy Technical Director, of the Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center is appreciated.

Book The Influence of Surface Phenomena on the Mechanical Properties of Structural Materials fatigue of Aluminum in Vacuum

Download or read book The Influence of Surface Phenomena on the Mechanical Properties of Structural Materials fatigue of Aluminum in Vacuum written by John L. Ham and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Techniques were developed for evaluating the fatigue life of metals by reverse bending in con trolled gaseous environments including high vacuum, and bombardment. These techniques were applied to electropolished specimens of commercia lly pure, half hard rolled aluminum sheet. The fatigue life of aluminum in reverse bending at 125 to 140 cycles per second was found to be about seven times longer in vacuum than in wet air and about four times longer in vacuum than in dry air. The cyclic strain causes more surface roughening in vacuum than in air. A hypothesis based on adsorption equilibrium and immunization to cracking by work hardening is proposed to explain the step change in life with pressure. The effectiveness of bombardment is ascribed to prevention of crack contamination by migration of mobile surface gas films. (Author).

Book Surface Properties And Engineering Of Complex Intermetallics

Download or read book Surface Properties And Engineering Of Complex Intermetallics written by Esther Belin-ferre and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2010-02-25 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the third in a series of 4 books issued yearly as a deliverable of the research school established within the European Network of Excellence CMA (for Complex Metallic Alloys). It is written by reputed experts in the fields of surface physics and chemistry, metallurgy and process engineering, combining expertise found inside as well as outside the network. The CMA network focuses on the huge group of largely unknown multinary alloys and compounds formed with crystal structures based on giant unit cells containing clusters, with many tens or up to more than thousand atoms per unit cell. In these phases, for many phenomena, the physical length scales are substantially smaller than the unit-cell dimension. Hence, these materials offer unique combinations of properties, which are mutually excluded in conventional materials: metallic electric conductivity combined with low thermal conductivity, combination of good light absorption with high-temperature stability, combination of high metallic hardness with reduced wetting by liquids, electrical and thermal resistance tuneable by composition variation, excellent resistance to corrosion, reduced cold-welding and adhesion, enhanced hydrogen storage capacity and light absorption, etc.The series of books will concentrate on: development of fundamental knowledge with the aim of understanding materials phenomena, technologies associated with the production, transformation and processing of knowledge-based multifunctional materials, surface engineering, support for new materials development and new knowledge-based higher performance materials for macro-scale applications.

Book Concepts and Design of Materials Nanoarchitectonics

Download or read book Concepts and Design of Materials Nanoarchitectonics written by Omar Azzaroni and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2022-02-09 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of nanoarchitechtonics was introduced to describe the correct manipulation of nanoscale materials in the creation of nano-devices and applications. Nanoarchitectonics has begun to spread into many fields including nanostructured materials synthesis, supramolecular assembly, nanoscale structural fabrications, materials hybridizations, materials and structures for energy and environmental sciences, device and physical application, and bio- and medical applications.
