Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research supports that many studies conducted across the country and internationally, acknowledge the positive effects of parental interest in learner academic achievement. The research findings reveals that no study about the role of SMTs and parents in enhancing learner academic achievement has been conducted in rural secondary schools of Sekhukhune Limpopo Province. Further inquiry discovered that studies conducted nationally and internationally focused only on parent participation in elementary schools to improve reading, composition, and cognitive powers of primary school children. Epstein (2011) posits that parental involvement diminishes as the child moves on to secondary school level. The intent of this study through qualitative case-study research explored and analysed the role SMTs and parents play in Sekhukhune District Limpopo Province in enhancing learners’ academic achievement. Five parents of Grade 8-12 learners and 3 SMT members participated from each of the six public secondary schools of Sekhukhune Limpopo province in the inquiry procedure. Principals regards parental engagement in education as interfering with school programmes. This work explored and examined how SMTs and parents collaborate and interact to improve learner academic achievement in rural public secondary schools of the Sekhukhune Limpopo Province. Knowledge of the concept parent involvement; encouraging positive parenting skills; enhancing communication with families; increasing volunteerism at school encouraging learning at home; increasing the number of parents in leadership and decision-making roles; improving community collaboration; capacitating parents and teachers with legislation and laws and dealing with barriers prohibiting effective involvement were some of the themes that evolved from the findings of this study. The implications point to the urgent need for proper training of the school management team for the efficient involvement of parents of children in rural areas, as this will enhance learner achievement. This research highlights the importance of collaboration between all stakeholders to establish a shared vision in order to improve learner academic achievement.

Book A Comparative Analysis of SMTs School Management Teams and Teachers Perceived Preferred Leadership Style

Download or read book A Comparative Analysis of SMTs School Management Teams and Teachers Perceived Preferred Leadership Style written by Gabatshwane Tsayang and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study compared the SMTs (School Management Teams) and teachers' perceptions of preferred leadership styles in some selected schools in Botswana. SMTs and teachers completed a questionnaire adopted from the leadership styles questionnaires. The findings of the study pointed to an overwhelming view that the preferred style of leadership is the collaborative type. It was also found that SMTs overrated themselves as displaying the collaborative behaviors than they were rated by teachers. It could be a result of superiority bias on the part of SMTs or could be a challenge of comparative research which attempts to compare objects of different contexts (SMTs and teachers). The recommendation made was that continuous comparisons of perceived leadership styles should be made from self-reflections by SMTs and evaluations of SMTs leadership behaviors by teachers who are the mirrors of the SMTs. The results could be used as a basis for school-based management interventions as well as input into the university-based management programmes reviews for fitness of purpose. It is also recommended that a study to assess whether or not there is a correlation between the preferred leadership and performance by these selected schools conducted.

Book A Review of the Implementation of the Better Behaviour Better Learning Report

Download or read book A Review of the Implementation of the Better Behaviour Better Learning Report written by Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Education (HMIe) (Scotland) and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The promotion of pupils' self-discipline has been clearly highlighted as one of the National Priorities for Scottish education. This reflects the key role that establishing positive working relationships between pupils and staff is known to play in ensuring effective learning. Equally, this relationship also works in reverse. The quality of teaching and learning has a major and direct influence on pupils' behaviour and motivation. Given the close links between pupil learning and behaviour, promoting positive behaviour in schools must be a key element in ensuring the best possible educational outcomes for children. Expressions of concern about standards of discipline in schools, in the media and elsewhere, have been a recurrent theme within the Scottish education system in recent times. In December 2000 the then Minister for Education, Europe and External Affairs, Jack McConnell, established a national task group on discipline in schools under his own chairmanship. The report of this Task Group, "Better Behaviour-Better Learning," was published in July 2001. Following the publication of the report, Scottish Executive Education Department (SEED) agreed a Joint Action Plan with The Convention of Local Authorities (COSLA), The Association of Directors of Education in Scotland (ADES) and the Association of Directors of Social Work (ADSW). The plan was launched in December 2001 and set out the path for implementation of the Task Group's Report. In April 2002 Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Education (HMIE) initiated a two-year review to monitor the implementation of the recommendations in the BB-BL report as reflected in the joint SEED/COSLA/ADES/ADSW action plan. The joint action plan provided a clear agenda for authorities and schools as they worked towards addressing the wide range of recommendations of the BB-BL report itself. Overall, after just over two years, HM Inspectors found that authorities and schools were making some good progress in taking this agenda forward. All authorities were committed to following the action plan through, and most had worked well with other appropriate agencies to do so. A few authorities with good practice had begun to make significant progress in improving trends on some key indicators, such as levels of pupil absence and exclusion, although many had yet to do this. In a number of other ways, there was evidence of how actions taken by schools and authorities were contributing towards ensuring a positive climate in schools and classrooms, whilst also ensuring the more effective inclusion of all pupils in the life and work of schools. Appended are: (1) "Better Behaviour-Better Learning," a Joint Action Plan; and (2) List of sample local authorities.

Book Parental Absence and its Impact to Behaviour and academic Performance

Download or read book Parental Absence and its Impact to Behaviour and academic Performance written by Noralyn Suce and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2021-01-27 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2019 in the subject Pedagogy - School Pedagogics, , language: English, abstract: This study was focused on the impact of parental absence on the behavior and academic performance of pupils in Polillo Central Elementary School. It utilized descriptive and cor relational types of research. The respondents comprised of 248 pupils in PCES from different grade levels. To gather data the researcher used a checklist questionnaire consisting of four dimensions, viz., behavior in the family, in the school, in the society and one for the data of the students. The data gathered were computed through percentage, weighted mean, Mann-Whitney U and Spearman rank. Based from the result of the study, it has been found out that majority of the respondents are 10-11 years old, mostly females and are in grade 6 level. It also revealed that majority of the respondents having parental absence are living with their grandparents and the reason of parental absence is because their parents are overseas Filipino Workers or working at other places. Results show that the behavior of pupils who live without one or both parents and their academic performance are not statistically related. The teacher needs to be aware of the background of her students to figure out why they behave positively or negatively. Moreover, parents or guardians of the pupils should put more effort in developing their child’s behavior and motivate them to perform well in school by praising them over little achievements that they get.
