Book The Inter Generational Transmission of Cognitive Abilities in Guatemala

Download or read book The Inter Generational Transmission of Cognitive Abilities in Guatemala written by Maria Cecilia Calderon and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines Early Childhood Development (ECD) outcomes and their association with family characteristics, investments and environmental factors. We are particularly interested in the inter-generational transmission of cognitive abilities. Given the strong causal links between cognitive abilities and economic productivity in adulthood, the inter-generational transmission of these abilities represents an important pathway by which economic advantage or poverty is perpetuated over time, an issue of especial salience in Latin America with its long history of inequality. While there are many associational studies on this topic, these cannot be considered causal given that the cognitive abilities of different generations reflect, in part, unobservable factors such as the genetic heritability of such abilities which are common across generations. We examine the causal relationship between parental cognitive abilities and ECD outcomes of their offspring using a rich data set from rural Guatemala that can account for such unobservable factors. We find that a 10 percent increase in maternal Raven's scores increases children's Raven's scores by 7.8 percent. A 10 percent increase in maternal reading and vocabulary skills increases children's score on a standard vocabulary test by five percent. Effects are larger for older children and the impact of maternal cognitive skills is larger than for paternal skills. Failing to account for unobservable factors substantially underestimates the impact of parental, especially maternal, cognitive skills on those of their children.

Book The Effect of Maternal Employment and Child Care on Children s Cognitive Development

Download or read book The Effect of Maternal Employment and Child Care on Children s Cognitive Development written by Raquel Bernal and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This article develops and estimates a dynamic model of employment and child care decisions of women after childbirth to evaluate the effects of these choices on children's cognitive ability. We use data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth to estimate it. Results indicate that the effects of maternal employment and child care on children's ability are negative and sizable. Having a mother that works full-time and uses child care during one year is associated with a reduction in ability test scores of approximately 1.8% (0.13 standard deviations). We assess the impact of policies related to parental leave and child care on children's outcomes.

Book Early Supplementary Feeding and Cognition

Download or read book Early Supplementary Feeding and Cognition written by Ernesto Pollitt and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 730 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of good nutrition on cognitive development are demonstrated in this longitudinal study conducted in four rural villages in Guatemala. Particular attention is given to subjects who were exposed to a dietary supplement prenatally and during the first two years of life. These subjects scored significantly higher on tests of knowledge, reading, vocabulary, and numeracy. The contrasts among tests scores were more pronounced in young adulthood than in early childhood.

Book Nutrition and Behavior 2nd Edition

Download or read book Nutrition and Behavior 2nd Edition written by John Worobey and published by CABI. This book was released on 2015-08-14 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship between nutrition and behaviour is bi-directional in nature, with nutritional factors able to affect activity and disposition, and behavior impacting diet and food intake. This book reviews these links, starting with their complex neurobiological basis, such as in the case of folate deficiency and cognitive decline. It also illustrates how behaviour may determine nutritional choices or status through peer modelling and poor dietary habits. Micronutrients and eating disorders are then critically addressed, with a review of current research methods and results, before extra-nutritional influencers on behaviour such as caffeine, herbal supplements and alcohol are discussed in the final section.

Book Maternal Education Parental Investment and Non Cognitive Skills in Rural China

Download or read book Maternal Education Parental Investment and Non Cognitive Skills in Rural China written by Jessica Leight and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of non-cognitive skills in determining long-term human capital and labor market outcomes is widely acknowledged, but relatively little is known about how educational investments by parents may respond to non-cognitive skills early in life. This paper evaluates the parental response to variation in non-cognitive skills among their children in rural Gansu province, China, employing a household fixed effects specification; non-cognitive skills are defined as the inverse of both externalizing challenges (behavioral problems and aggression) and internalizing challenges (anxiety and withdrawal). The results suggest that on average, parents invest no more in terms of educational expenditure in children who have better non-cognitive skills relative to their siblings. However, there is significant heterogeneity with respect to maternal education; less educated mothers appear to reinforce differences in non-cognitive skills between their children, while more educated mothers compensate for these differences. Most importantly, there is evidence that these compensatory investments lead to catch-up in non-cognitive skills over time for children of more educated mothers.

Book Maternal Employment and Children s Development

Download or read book Maternal Employment and Children s Development written by Adele Eskeles Gottfried and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a review written in 1979, I noted that there was a paucity of research examining the effects of maternal employment on the infant and young child and also that longitudinal studies of the effects of maternal em ployment were needed (Hoffman, 1979). In the last 10 years, there has been a flurry of research activity focused on the mother's employment during the child's early years, and much of this work has been longi tudinal. All of the studies reported in this volume are at least short-term longitudinal studies, and most of them examine the effects of maternal employment during the early years. The increased focus on maternal employment during infancy is not a response to the mandate of that review but rather reflects the new employment patterns in the United States. In March 1985, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that 49.4% of married women with children less than a year old were employed outside the home (Hayghe, 1986). This figure is up from 39% in 1980 and more than double the rate in 1970. By now, most mothers of children under 3 are in the labor force.

Book Maternal Education Home Environments and the Development of Children and Adolescents

Download or read book Maternal Education Home Environments and the Development of Children and Adolescents written by Pedro Carneiro and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "We study the intergenerational effects of maternal education on children's cognitive achievement, behavioral problems, grade repetition and obesity. We address endogeneity of maternal schooling by instrumenting with variation in schooling costs when the mother grew up. Using matched data from the female participants of the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979 (NLSY79) and their children, we can control for mother's ability and family background factors. Our results show substantial intergenerational returns to education. For children aged 7-8, for example, our IV results indicate that an additional year of mother's schooling increases the child's performance on a standardized math test by almost 0.1 of a standard deviation, and reduces the incidence of behavioral problems. Our data set allows us to study a large array of channels which may transmit the effect of maternal education to the child, including family environment and parental investments at different ages of the child. We find that income effects, delayed childbearing, and assortative mating are likely to be important, and we show that maternal education leads to substantial differences in maternal labor supply. We investigate heterogeneity in returns, and we present results focusing both on very early stages in the child's life as well as adolescent outcomes. We present a falsification exercise to support the validity of our instruments, and our results are found to be robust in a sensitivity analysis. We discuss policy implications and relate our findings to intergenerational mobility"--Forschungsinstitut zur Zukunft der Arbeit web site.
