Book International Conference on Residual Stresses

Download or read book International Conference on Residual Stresses written by G. Beck and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 1043 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Residual stresses are always introduced in materials when they are produced, or when they undergo non-uniform plastic deformation during use. The circumstances that can cause residual stresses are therefore numerous. Residual stresses exist in all materials and, depending on their distribution, can playa beneficial role (for example, compressive surface stress) or have a catastrophic effect, especially on fatigue behaviour and corrosion properties. The subject of residual stresses took form around 1970 with the development of methods to measure macroscopic deformations during the machining of materials or on an atomic scale by X-ray diffraction. These techniques have made considerable progress in the last 20 years. The meetings organized in several countries (Germany, France, Japan, etc. ) have largely contributed to this progress, aided by the numerous exchanges of information and knowledge to which they have given rise. Studies of the formation of residual stresses began more slowly, but have progressed with the emergence of increasingly realistic models of materials behaviour and with access to ever more powerful codes for numerical calculations. Two successive meetings for discussing this topic have been held in Europe. The first, held in 1982 in Nancy (France), consisted of 30 participants from 5 countries. The second was held in Linkoping (Sweden) in 1984, with 80 participants of 16 nationalities. It was decided to hold a first International Conference, ICRS, to address all aspects of the problem. Held in 1986 in Garmisch-Partenkirschen (FRG), it was an assembly of neady 300 participants from 21 countries.

Book Circular Cylinders and Pressure Vessels

Download or read book Circular Cylinders and Pressure Vessels written by Vincenzo Vullo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-29 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides comprehensive coverage of stress and strain analysis of circular cylinders and pressure vessels, one of the classic topics of machine design theory and methodology. Whereas other books offer only a partial treatment of the subject and frequently consider stress analysis solely in the elastic field, Circular Cylinders and Pressure Vessels broadens the design horizons, analyzing theoretically what happens at pressures that stress the material beyond its yield point and at thermal loads that give rise to creep. The consideration of both traditional and advanced topics ensures that the book will be of value for a broad spectrum of readers, including students in postgraduate, and doctoral programs and established researchers and design engineers. The relations provided will serve as a sound basis for the design of products that are safe, technologically sophisticated, and compliant with standards and codes and for the development of innovative applications.

Book Applied Stress Analysis

Download or read book Applied Stress Analysis written by T.H. Hyde and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 744 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume records the proceedings of an international conference organised as a tribute to the contribution made by Professor H. Fessler over the whole of his pro fessionallife, in the field of applied stress analysis. The conference, held at the Univer sity of Nottingham on 30 and 31 August 1990, was timed to coincide with the date of his formal retirement from the post of Professor of Experimental Stress Analysis in the University. The idea grew from discussions between some of Professor Fessler's academic associates from Nottingham and elsewhere. An organising committee was set up, and it was decided to invite contributions to the conference in the form of review papers and original research papers in the field of experimental, theoretical and computational stress analysis. The size of the response, both in papers submitted and in attendance at the conference, indicates that the idea proved attractive to many of his peers, former associates and research students. A bound copy of the volume is to be presented to Professor Fessler at the conference dinner on 30 August 1990.

Book Influence of the Bauschinger Effect on Residual Stress and Fatigue Lifetimes in Autofrettaged Thick Walled Cylinders

Download or read book Influence of the Bauschinger Effect on Residual Stress and Fatigue Lifetimes in Autofrettaged Thick Walled Cylinders written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work addresses the influence of Bauschinger effect upon residual stresses and associated fatigue lifetimes for pressurized, autofrettaged thick cylinders. The model employed allows for the variation with radius of Bauschinger Effect Factor (REF) throughout the autofrettaged tube since the percentage plastic strain, which determines BEF, will vary from a maximum value at the bore to zero at the elastic plastic interface. Accounting for BEF variability, it is demonstrated that the residual compressive hoop stress at the inner radius of the tube reaches a maximum value at the percentage overstrain level below which reversed yielding does not occur. Existing experimental residual stress measurements from a variety of sources are shown to support this thesis. This value of overstrain may serve to maximize crack initiation lifetime in autofrettaged thick cylinders. For a tube with significant heat checking and associated initial crack like defects, it is necessary to consider fatigue crack growth rates governed by a crack growth law such as Paris's Law. For a tube of radius ratio 2.0 and at a value of approximately 40 percent overstrain, slightly in excess of that for the onset of reversed yielding, the fatigue lifetime exhibits a maximum value. Fatigue lifetimes achieve a maximum value at overstrain levels in which yielding reaches 1.4 times bore radius and are almost constant thereafter. Furthermore, such extended overstrain leads to a small increase in residual stress at the outside diameter (OD), thus increasing R ratio at that location and reducing fatigue lifetime for crack growth originating at the OD. Existing experimental lifetime measurements are shown to require the inclusion of BEF to properly account for these observed lifetimes.

Book excerpt: Residual Stresses presents a collection of articles that provides information regarding the use of surface treatment systems. It discusses the developments in the technology and application of surface treatment. It addresses the influence of minor stresses on the performance of materials. Some of the topics covered in the book are the introduction to self-equilibrating stresses existing in materials, the stresses that form as a consequence of welding, the stresses made by machining, and the mechanical generation of self-stresses. The analysis of the stresses caused by thermal and thermochemical surface treatments is covered. The minor stresses in composite materials are discussed. The text describes the stresses in uranium and uranium alloys. The Trepan or ring core method, centre-hole method, and Sach's method are presented. A chapter of the volume is devoted to the measurement of residual stresses. Another section of the book focuses on the application of shot peened plates to residual stress distribution. The book will provide useful information to mechanics, engineers, students, and researchers.

Book Residual Stresses in Thick walled Cylinders Resulting from Mechancially Induced Overstrain

Download or read book Residual Stresses in Thick walled Cylinders Resulting from Mechancially Induced Overstrain written by T. E. Davidson and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Autofrettage is a process for inducing elastic response in thick-walled cylinders subjected tointernal pressures which otherwise cause plastic strains. To extend the use of autofrettage to higher pressure applications and to eliminate many of the problems encountered in the use of the conventional process based on the use of direct internal hydrostatic pressure, a new technique has been developed which utilizes the mechanical advantage of a silding wedge to produce the desired bore enlargement. Since the use of a sliding wedge or mandrel will induce shearing forces at the mandrel-cylinder interface, the resultant residual stress distribution will differ from that theoretically predicted as characteristic of the direct hydrostatic process. It is the purpose of this work to determine the residual stress distribution as a function of magnitude of overstrain and diameter ratio, and how it affects the reyielding characteristics of cylinders autofrettaged by this technique. Book Prediction of Residual Stresses in an Autofrettaged Thick Walled Cylinder

Download or read book Prediction of Residual Stresses in an Autofrettaged Thick Walled Cylinder written by P. C. T. Chen and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the earlier results for residual stresses are based on the assumption of elastic unloading. In this report, the prediction of residual stresses for the case of reverse yielding including the combined Baushinger and hardening effect will be reported for an autofrettaged thick-walled cylinder. The Bauschinger effect factor is varying as a function of overstrain. The strain-hardening effect is considered with different parameters used for loading and unloading process. The new results indicate that the influence of the combined Bauschinger and hardening effect on residual stress distribution is significant. (Author).

Book Stress Intensity Factors for Internally Pressurized Thick Wall Cylinders

Download or read book Stress Intensity Factors for Internally Pressurized Thick Wall Cylinders written by John H. Underwood and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selected stress intensity factor solutions from the literature are related to the problem of internally pressurized thick-wall cylinders with straight-front and curved-front cracks. The recent K solutions of Bowie + Freese and Rice + Levy are combined in an estimate of the K solution for a pressurized cylinder with a semielliptical crack originating along the inner wall. The estimate of K is compared with the available experimental and analytical K data for shallow cracks. The estimated K solution is modified to account for various complex loadings in pressurized cylinders. Included are modifications to describe lack of pressure on the crack surfaces in pressurized cylinders, residual stress in the wall of pressurized cylinders, a combination of an unpressurized crack and residual stress in the wall. The effect of cylic pressure loading on K is also discussed in relation to Throop's work on fatigue of pressurized cylinders. (Author).

Book Residual Stresses in Swage autofrettaged Thick walled Cylinders

Download or read book Residual Stresses in Swage autofrettaged Thick walled Cylinders written by Graham Clark and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Autofrettage of thick-walled pressure vessels involves permanent expansion of the cylinder bores using hydraulic pressure or an oversize swage, and is used to increase the elastic strength of the cylinder. The beneficial residual stresses which produce this effect also retard the growth of fatigue cracks which may form at the bore surface on cyclic pressurization, and are therefore of major importance in determining the life of the cylinders which are fatigue-limited in operation., This report describes predictions of residual stress distributions and cylinder expansions for swage autogrettage of a large-calibre gun barrel forging, and evaluates these predictions by comparison with experimental residual stress determinations.
