Book excerpt: It is widely documented that African Americans consistently underutilize mental health services (Hu, Snowden, Jerrell, & Nguyen, 1991; Snowden & Cheung, 1990; Takeuchi, Sue, & Yeh, 1995; Woodward, Taylor, Bullard, Neighbors, Chatters, & Jackson, 2008). The purpose of the current study was to investigate the influence of different cultural factors that may influence the help seeking attitudes of members of the African American community. Specifically, religious commitment, racial identity, and cultural mistrust were examined to determine the extent to which these factors predicted African American study participants attitudes towards seeking professional psychological help. The Religious Commitment Inventory 10 (RCI 10; Worthington, Wade, Hight, Ripley, McCollough, Berry, Schmitt, Berry, Bursley, & O' Connor, 2003), Cross Racial Identity Scale (CRIS; Vandiver, Cross, Fhagen Smith, & Worrell, 2002; Worrell, Cross, & Vandiver, 2001), Cultural Mistrust Inventory (CMI; Terrell & Terrell, 1981), and Attitudes Towards Seeking Professional Psychological Help (ATSPPH 10; Fischer & Farina, 1995) were used to measure study variables. A personal data form also helped obtain demographic information about the study participants. Participants comprised of a community based sample of 138 African Americans. The results of multiple regression analysis indicated that scores lower on Internalized Multiculturalist Inclusive Subscale and higher on Cultural Mistrust Inventory and Pre Encounter Miseducation Subscale significantly predicted higher scores on Attitudes Towards Seeking Professional Psychological Help Scale. Scores on Internalized Multiculturalist Inclusive explained the highest percentage of professional psychological help seeking attitudes followed by Cultural Mistrust and Pre Encounter Miseducation, respectively. These findings indicated that individuals who have a less multiculturally integrated sense of self, are more mistrusting of Whites, and hold more negative stereotypes about the Black community are less likely to perceive professional psychological services as beneficial. Implications of the study findings and directions for future research are discussed.

This response, known as cultural mistrust, significantly contributes to negative help-seeking attitudes and underutilization of mental health services because the majority of practitioners are white (Grier and Cobbs, 1968; Whaley, 2001). This report will use multiple regression statistical analysis to explore racial identity, perceived racism, and religious orientation as predictors of cultural mistrust to propose ways practitioners can increase African-American utilization of mental health services. Gender differences in cultural mistrust will also be explored.

Book excerpt: The results of a multiple regression analysis indicated that participants with higher scores on the Cultural Mistrust Inventory, lower scores on the Preencounter Assimilation subscale, and higher scores on the Internalization Afrocentricity subscale showed a greater preference for a Black counselor. Black participants might have preferred a Black counselor due to their strong feelings of mistrust of Whites, attitudes that reject assimilation into the dominant, White culture and attitudes that emphasized positive connections to Black people and African culture. A finding that may have significantly influenced Black participants' preference for a Black counselor was the significant relationship found between scores on the Cultural Mistrust Inventory and the Immersion - Emersion Anti-White subscale. Strong feelings of mistrust of Whites were significantly related to strong feelings of hatred and disdain for White people.

Book excerpt: This study explored interpersonal trust, racial identity, perceived racism, and religious orientation as predictors of preference for a Black counselor and cultural mistrust. The unique variance of interpersonal trust and cultural mistrust in predicting preference for a Black counselor was also explored. The relationship between cultural mistrust and interpersonal trust was tested to determine whether or not they are independent constructs. This study also examined the relationship between racial identity and religious orientation. Gender differences in religious orientation, cultural mistrust and preference for a Black counselor were examined. Previous studies provide support that cultural mistrust contributes to negative help-seeking attitudes and underutilization of mental health services. Researchers have identified racial identity and perceived racism as correlates to and/or predictors of cultural mistrust and preference for a Black counselor (Whaley, 2001). This study involved participants recruited in part from the Educational Psychology (EDP) Subject Pool at The University of Texas at Austin (UT). Participants were also recruited from five student organizations at UT. Participants completed the survey using an online survey tool or a paper copy of the survey. One stratum was used for selection of participants: students who racially identify as African-American or Black. Results of the study revealed interpersonal trust as a significant predictor of preference for a Black counselor. However, exploratory analyses indicated that cultural mistrust served as the sole predictor of Black counselor preference when seeking a counselor for dealing with racial concerns. Interpersonal trust, immersion-emersion anti-white racial identity attitudes (IEAW) and extrinsic religious orientation were significant predictors of cultural mistrust. Results also indicated a positive relationship between Internalization Multiculturalist (IMCI) racial identity attitudes and intrinsic religious orientation. A negative correlation was found to exist between intrinsic religious orientation and IEAW. High cultural mistrust levels were also positively associated with high IEAW attitudes. Additionally, a small, yet statistically significant negative relationship was found to exist between cultural mistrust and interpersonal trust. Cultural mistrust did not account for a significant amount of variance above that of interpersonal trust in predicting preference for a Black counselor. Finally, no mean sex differences were found among levels of Black counselor preference, cultural mistrust, and intrinsic or extrinsic religious orientation. Exploratory analyses also revealed a positive relationship between cultural mistrust and seven out of ten scenarios for Black counselor preference. Individuals with a preference for a Black counselor reported higher levels of cultural mistrust related to issues concerning: excessive worry/anxiety, drinking too much alcohol/using drugs, relationship problems, feelings of harassment/feeling threatened, sexual issues, racial issues, and difficulty controlling anger. Results of the study bear implications for understanding cultural mistrust and interpersonal trust as it relates to counselor preference. Implications for counselors are also discussed regarding the intersection of racial and religious identities. Limitations and future directions for research are also discussed.

Book excerpt: Suicide among African Americans occurs at about half the rate with which it occurs among white Americans. Why is the black rate of suicide so much lower, particularly when one considers the effects of racism and other socio-economic factors on African Americans? One answer that has been offered is that churches within the African-American community have a greater influence than among white Americans and that they provide amelioration of social forces that would otherwise lead to suicide. To date no other book has provided an in-depth ethnographic study of the buffering effect of the black church against suicide. Findings from Early's study indicate that there is a consensus within the black community in terms of its attitudes and beliefs toward suicide. Early concludes that suicide is alien to underlying African-American belief systems and a complete denial of what it means to be black. This important study will be invaluable to sociologists and others studying contemporary race relations and social problems.

They insisted that so-called Negroes are, in reality, Ethiopian Hebrews, Asiatic Muslims, or raceless children of God. Rejecting conventional American racial classification, many black southern migrants and immigrants from the Caribbean embraced these alternative visions of black history, racial identity, and collective future, thereby reshaping the black religious and racial landscape. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between racial identity, attitudes toward utilizing counseling services, and religious commitment (the independent variables) as predictors of intention to utilize counseling services and self-disclosure (the dependent variables) among Black adults ages 25 to 50. Data were collected from 100 participants with women comprising 75% of the sample. Results showed that pre-encounter and religious commitment were negatively associated with intention to utilize counseling services and self-disclosure. Second, internalization and attitudes were predictors of intention to utilize counseling services and self-disclosure in counseling. These results make an important contribution to research with an emphasis on psychological help-seeking behavior within the Black community. When designing interventions for the Black population, the demographic variables, previous experience, overall satisfaction with professional providers, attitudes toward seeking professional counseling help, and an individual's level of religious commitment should be carefully evaluated. Further, a collaboration between religious organizations within the Black community and professional counseling centers can assist with referrals potentially increasing utilization rates.

Drawing together 18th- and 19th-century accomodationism and its assimilationist heirs with the movements of Black Power and Afrocentrism, Anderson shows that all exhibit a similar structure of racial identity. He suggests that it is time to move beyond the confines of "the cult of black heroic genius" to what Bell Hooks has termed "postmodern blackness": a racial discourse that leaves room to negotiate African American identities along lines of class, gender, sexuality, and age as well as race.

Further the relationship between racial pride, stigma, and attitudes toward Black media figures and characters who have mental illness was investigated. Manuscript One Abstract Introduction: The first manuscript is entitled Mental Illness Knowledge, Stigma and Help Seeking Behaviors: The Role of Spirituality and The African American Church, and answers two research questions. These are: a) What relationship exists between mental illness knowledge, perceived stigma, spirituality, and reported help seeking behaviors? b) Are there demographical differences between African Americans who are supportive of the Black church playing a role in addressing mental illness versus those who are not? c) What role should the African-American church play in addressing mental illness? Method: To answer the research questions, a convenience sample of 409 African American church going participants was recruited to complete an anonymous survey. Results: Mental illness knowledge correlated with several items, such as help seeking, stigma and the role of the church. In this study, most participants stated they would receive mental health services if justified. Participants who had high levels of knowledge had lower stigma levels. The majority of participants stated that they would participate in help seeking programs if the church provided those opportunities. Most of the participants were very spiritual and attended a faith-based service weekly. Manuscript Two Abstract Introduction: The second manuscript is entitled An Empire State of Mind: Racial Pride, Stigma and Perceptions of Black Mental Illness in the Media, and answers 3 specific research questions. These are: a) What relationship exists between Racial Pride, Stigma and Perceptions of Black mental illness portrayal in the media? b) Do African Americans think that the media plays a role in addressing mental illness stigma in the Black culture? c) What attitudes and perceptions exist about media portrayal of African Americans who have mental illness? Method: A convenience sample of 409 African Americans (same sample for study 1) who were members of a Black church was recruited to respond to an anonymous survey. Results: Participants were generally aware of Black mental illness among figures in the media and in television shows. Participants felt that portrayals in the media influence how the Black community perceives mental illness in their community and are aware of stigma toward it. Participants had high levels of racial pride and a moderate level of stigma against mental illness. However, they saw a need for continued discussion of mental illness in the media to decrease stigma. Participants with high levels of racial pride were more likely to be aware of Black media figures and characters with mental illness, feel that mental illness in Blacks should be discussed in the media and see the media as having a role in reducing said stigma. Participants with higher stigma about mental illness were less likely to perceive mental illness stigma in the media.

Those disparities are caused not only by fundamental differences in health status across segments of the population, but also because of inequities in factors that impact health status, so-called determinants of health. Only part of an individual's health status depends on his or her behavior and choice; community-wide problems like poverty, unemployment, poor education, inadequate housing, poor public transportation, interpersonal violence, and decaying neighborhoods also contribute to health inequities, as well as the historic and ongoing interplay of structures, policies, and norms that shape lives. When these factors are not optimal in a community, it does not mean they are intractable: such inequities can be mitigated by social policies that can shape health in powerful ways. Communities in Action: Pathways to Health Equity seeks to delineate the causes of and the solutions to health inequities in the United States. This report focuses on what communities can do to promote health equity, what actions are needed by the many and varied stakeholders that are part of communities or support them, as well as the root causes and structural barriers that need to be overcome.

Book excerpt: The present study examined the strength of certain help-seeking barriers and predictor variables in predicting the help-seeking intentions of African American churchgoers. Research suggests numerous barriers impede mental health use among African Americans; however, the present study focused on help-seeking attitudes, cultural mistrust, psychological distress, self-stigma, public stigma, and perceived behavioral control. The theory of planned behavior served as a theoretical underpinning, guiding the integration of theory based and culture specific variables in one model. The present sample included 159 Black American churchgoers and attendees. The studys variables were each hypothesized to predict help-seeking intentions among the sample. A bivariate correlation and multivariate analysis of variance provided support in constructing and testing three path models. While the path models demonstrated an overall poor fit of the data, findings from the other statistical tests partially supported the proposed hypotheses. Considering the present study is one of few to investigate the help-seeking intentions of Black American churchgoers, further exploration is warranted, and implications for research and practice are extensive.

Book excerpt: The overall results of the study confirm the earlier findings that a positive relationship exists between the ethnicity of the students and their preference for a counselor. The above findings are consistent with previous research studies conducted by Porce and Banikiotes (1992) and Thompson, Worthington and Atkinson (1998). These researchers also found that African Americans students preferred the services of African American counselors rather than the services of Caucasian counselors. The unexpected finding is that the Black American students were more likely than nonAmerican Black students to prefer a Black counselor.
