Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Industrial and Artistic Technology of Paint and Varnish IN the twelve years which have passed since the first publica tion of this work, certain changes have come about which seem to make a new edition desirable. The most important is the use of tung-oil in varnish-making, which has entirely changed the character of cheap and medium-priced products. Varnishes con taining it dry with a rapidity and hardness unknown before, which lessens the time needed for finishing work; and its remarkable water-resisting quality makes rosin-varnishes more durable and better in every way. But surfaces thus finished become hard and crack, the general appearance of furniture and of railway passenger coaches and medium-priced carriages of every sor't throughout the country has grown worse rather than better during the last ten years. Book German Varnish Making Classic Reprint

Download or read book German Varnish Making Classic Reprint written by Max Bottler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from German Varnish-Making For several years information as to progress in varnish manufacture in Germany has been Obtained only through the German journals, which are not generally accessible in America; so the publication Of a new book on the subject by Professor Bottler, who has made a scientific and practical study Of the same, calls for an English translation. It is perhaps too concise and brief, being written for those who are somewhat familiar with German methods, but it is at any rate authoritative and full Of interest. The translator thought best to add to it various notes, which in the end amounted to additions so considerable that it seemed well to call attention to the fact in the title of the book. The translation is printed in such a manner as 'to be distinct from these additions and easily recognized; in these addi tions it has been the aim to avoid repeating anything to be found in the translator's former book (technology of Point and Varnish), but to make this supplementary to that earlier treatise, acquaintance with which is presumed on the part of the reader of the present work. This necessarily gives the matter thus added a fragmentary character which it is hoped may be excused on the ground that the collection and publication of facts is the aim, rather than literary effect. Much of this added matter has to do with paints, and it may be questioned whether it is in place in a book on varnish. But in reality the two are inseparably connected. Book Analysis of Paint Vehicles Japans and Varnishes Classic Reprint

Download or read book Analysis of Paint Vehicles Japans and Varnishes Classic Reprint written by Clifford Dyer Holley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-03-24 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Analysis of Paint Vehicles, Japans and Varnishes The great progress in the development of the Paint, Enamel and Varnish Industries which has marked the past decade has brought with it an urgent necessity for systematic methods of analysis, particularly with reference to the vehicles used. Due to the increased number of technical men working in these industries, great advances have been made in the discovery, processing and utilization of a number of oils, and other vehicles which have not heretofore found extended use in the paint and varnish trade. The methods of analysis here presented are essentially those used by the author in his laboratory work. Many of them are the results of extended investigation conducted by him and his associates, others represent the best thought of representative technologists, and have been adopted as standard methods by the American Society For Testing Materials. In the arrangement and presentation of the subject matter, the needs of the analyst have been kept constantly in view, and it is the hope of the author that this book will prove of material value to all those engaged in the manufacture and examination of paint, enamel and varnish products. The quantity required for the former purpose bears a positive relation to general manufacturing activity. For the latter purpose, where the need may be deferred, the current financial con dition of the owner of the property has considerable bearing upon the quantity of paint used. For this latter purpose also the cost of the paint is a factor of considerable importance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-11-04 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Painter and Varnisher's Guide, or a Treatise, Both in Theory and Practice, on the Art of Making and Applying Varnishes: On the Different Kinds of Painting, and on the Method of Preparing Colours Both Simple and Compound The Thebaid, the most remote par t of Egypt, -which is now a desert, notwithstanding the ravage of time, still attests the influence of the fine arts of Greece on the people of that country. It would appear, from the recent observa tions of some travellers who Visited the ruins of Thebes, that the antient inhabitants of this country were well versed in all the branches of design and of painting. If the fresh ness which still characterizes some fragments discovered in antient galleries buried amidst ruins, seems to prove that the painters were then acquainted with the'same means, or others equivalent to them, which the modern painters employ to preserve their works for posterity, -this circumstance 'must alford new motives for applauding the wonderful discovery of the art of printing, which becomes the most certain safeguard to the productions of the human mind against that spirit of devastation by which all conquering nations are animated.
