Book The Indo European Syllable

Download or read book The Indo European Syllable written by Andrew Byrd and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Indo-European Syllable Andrew Miles Byrd investigates the process of syllabification within Proto-Indo-European (PIE), revealing connections to a number of seemingly unrelated phonological processes in the proto-language. Drawing from insights in linguistic typology and synchronic theory, he makes two significant advances in our understanding of PIE phonology. First, by analyzing securely reconstructable consonant clusters at word’s edge, he devises a methodology which allows us to predict which types of consonant clusters could occur word-medially in PIE. Thus, a number of previously disconnected phonological rules can now be understood as being part of a conspiracy motivated by violations in syllable structure. Second, he uncovers evidence of morphological influence within the syllable, created by processes such as quantitative ablaut. These advances allow us to view PIE as a synchronic grammar, one which can be described by -- and contribute to -- modern linguistic theory.

Book Indo European Accent and Ablaut

Download or read book Indo European Accent and Ablaut written by Thomas Olander and published by Museum Tusculanum Press. This book was released on 2013-05-31 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt:

Ablaut, the grammatically conditioned vowel alternations found in e.g. English sing vs. sang vs. sung, is one of the most characteristic features of the Indo-European languages. The different ablaut grades seem to be related to the position of the accent in Proto-Indo-European. A good understanding of the relationship between accent and ablaut in Proto-Indo-European requires thorough analyses of the role played by the two phenomena in the Indo-European daughter languages.

The aim of the volume is to present the state of the art in current work on accent and ablaut in Proto-Indo-European and its daughter languages. The contributors analyze the interplay between accent and ablaut with attention both to theoretical aspects and to the specific linguistic material. Presenting up-to-date overviews of the models developed by various schools of thought, the contributors discuss a wide array of empirical as well as methodological problems, thus opening up vistas for further research.

Book Origins of the Greek Verb

Download or read book Origins of the Greek Verb written by Andreas Willi and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 748 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Situated at the crossroads of comparative philology, classics and general historical linguistics, this study is the first ever attempt to outline in full the developments which led from the remotest recoverable stages of the Indo-European proto-language to the complex verbal system encountered in Homer and other early Greek texts. By combining the methods of comparative and internal reconstruction with a careful examination of large collections of primary data and insights gained from the study of language change and linguistic typology, Andreas Willi uncovers the deeper reasons behind many surface irregularities and offers a new understanding of how categories such as aspect, tense and voice interact. Drawing upon evidence from all major branches of Indo-European, and providing exhaustive critical coverage of scholarly debate on the most controversial issues, this book will be an essential reference tool for anyone seeking orientation in this burgeoning but increasingly fragmented area of linguistic research.

Book Variation with intrusive t in ancient Greek

Download or read book Variation with intrusive t in ancient Greek written by Catalin Anghelina and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Nominal stems ending in t are very rare in Proto-Indo-European. Despite this fact Ancient Greek displays a series of nominal stems that end in t. Their presence in Ancient Greek suggests that the insertion of t in words of PIE origin must be a process which occurred in Greek itself. From a diachronic perspective these stems fall into two categories. The first is represented by words which display the t in their stems in all the historical records we have, both in epigraphical evidence-including Mycenaean-and in literary sources. For this category we cannot trace the moment and the place when this "older" t entered the paradigms. The second category, however, contains words that show an allomorphic variation between t-ful stems and t-less stems. Given the fact that Homer uses in the majority of cases the t-less stems one can see, in post-Homeric dialects, how the stems with this "intrusive" t coexist with the t-less stems and win eventually over. The main goal of the dissertation is to see how this allomorphic variation evolved through historical Greek. Its second purpose is to see what this allomorphic variation can tell us about the origin of the intrusive t. The perfect active participle shows up in historical Greek as a t-stem. Nevertheless, scanty evidence from Mycenaean suggested that in this dialect of Greek the participle may have been t-less. The work addresses this problem again and comes up with the hypothesis that the forms Mycenaean displays might be only adjectives derived from former t-less participles, but not t-less participles. Consequently, the t-ful participle may still be a creation of Common Greek. A last issue regards the -ti adverbs in Greek, which have been often considered to be former locatives of t-stems. The study shows that this hypothesis does not seem to be true and that they are more likely to be the result of an analogical process, which occurred in Greek and not in PIE.

Book Indo European Word Formation

Download or read book Indo European Word Formation written by James Clackson and published by Museum Tusculanum Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains twenty articles on the subject of derivational morphology in Indo-European languages, and is the result of the conference "Indo-European Word Formation", held in Copenhagen, October 20th - 22nd 2000. The papers, covering all areas of Indo-European, make substantial contributions to the current intensive research on word formation, and many of them break new ground or shed new light on old problems. While some contributions are particularly concerned with the construction of theoretical models of Indo-European, others continue the traditional philological research into corpus languages. Finally, such issues as the borderland between morphology and syntax and the potential connection between Indo-European and other language families are brought up for discussion. Contributions by: Fabrice Cavoto, Paul S. Cohen, George Dunkel, Adam Hyllested, Britta Irslinger, Folke Josephson, Konstantin Krasukhin, Martin Kûmmel, Jenny Larsson, Rosemarie Lühr, Michael Meier-Brügger, Benedicte Nielsen, Alan Nussbaum, Birgit Olsen, Natalia Pimenova, Jens Elmegård Rasmussen, Elisabeth Rieken, Velizar Sadovski, Woiciech Smoczynski, Brent Vine og Gordon Whittaker.

Book Comparative Indo European Linguistics

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives a comprehensive introduction to Comparative Indo-European Linguistics. It starts with a presentation of the languages of the family (from English and the other Germanic languages, the Celtic and Slavic languages, Latin, Greek and Sanskrit through Armenian and Albanian) and a discussion of the culture and origin of the Indo-Europeans, the speakers of the Indo-European proto-language.The reader is introduced into the nature of language change and the methods of reconstruction of older language stages, with many examples (from the Indo-European languages). A full description is given of the sound changes, which makes it possible to follow the origin of the different Indo-European languages step by step. This is followed by a discussion of the development of all the morphological categories of Proto-Indo-European. The book presents the latest in scholarly insights, like the laryngeal and glottalic theory, the accentuation, the ablaut patterns, and these are systematically integrated into the treatment. The text of this second edition has been corrected and updated by Michiel de Vaan. Sixty-six new exercises enable the student to practice the reconstruction of PIE phonology and morphology.
