If so, it has not been intentional. But it results from the fact, that in many instances, it was impossible for me to tell Whether the thought, or mode of expression, was my own, growing out of the inspiration of the sub ject, or received from some Author, read years ago, whose sentiments and language, I had made my own. This must serve as my apology, as it has been my inten tion, always, to give honor where honor was due. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pulpit and American Life In this time of social rebuilding, it is well to turn the thought to the forces that are really creative and constructive. The popular thought is too apt to be superficial. Men talk of stabilizing the world when they mean only return to normal production. They forget that the world has been shaken by the clash of great ideals - and that peace is a spiritual attain ment - only through justice and mercy and humility. Christianity has to do with the contests of our age and is involved in their outcome. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Princeton Pulpit Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Princeton Pulpit Classic Reprint written by John T. Duffield and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Princeton Pulpit The sermon of Dr. Archibald Alexander is probably the last complete discourse he ever prepared, and was delivered by him in the City of New York, at the instal lation of his son, the Rev. James W. Alexander, D.D. The friends of Prof. Dod have selected from his manu scripts a sermon, which from its subject, was one of his favourite discourses. Its devout and elevating sentiments, in regard to those things that are not seen, will doubt less be read with peculiar interest, now that he who uttered them, is no longer looking at those things, as through a glass, darkly, but face to face beholds them, with the Open vision of one of the Spirits of the just made perfect. Book The Fruit of the Spirit and Other Sermons from a Greylock Pulpit Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Fruit of the Spirit and Other Sermons from a Greylock Pulpit Classic Reprint written by Alford Brown Penniman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-22 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fruit of the Spirit and Other Sermons From a Greylock Pulpit Most of these sermons were delivered between january and June of eighteen hundred and ninety-seven. They first appeared in a weekly publication called A Greylock Pulpit. It seems fitting to give a few reasons which led to their publication. Surrounded with machinery for what is known as Institutional church work, I desired to make emphatic the inspiration which belongs to the living Word. Having already in use a sufficiently elaborate order of worship, multiplied organizations, a parish house with gymnasium and amusement rooms, a young men's literary society, all splendid channels for energy; the pulpit as a herald may speak to the indifferent life of the community and induce interest by means of the impersonal page. In the half-hour or more given to the sermon, there is much condensation, which is not in vain. If opportunity for review be given the people from week to week. I saw a further reason in the good chance to revive old friendships. One who has changed his residence, the old homestead for the college, the college for the world, one church, town or country for another, what ever his gain, must keenly feel the loss of separation. Perhaps my ser mons may prove a long, rough pole, by which I shall still save drowning friendships. Please note that the series was not christened The, but A Grey lock Pulpit. The title was given me by Greylock Mountain itself. The base begins beneath my study and the mountain rises to a height of four thousand feet of beauty and strength. On a clear day at least four states, New York, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts and perhaps Connecticut can be seen from this summit. Greylock is Berkshire's Mount Zion. If mountaineers are always freemen, mountain preach ers ought to be free preachers. This Taconic mountain has been the object of much contention among geologists. However, their polemic was of the last decade. Theological strife is happily passing, and the church of today has earnestly begun to study sociology. Greylock has lately been made a type by geologists. The churches of our valley are slowly conforming to a higher ideal. Again Greylock is a deposit, not the result of volcanic action like the lower and opposite Hoosac range. The Greylock message therefore is that our social changes ought to be educational and gradual rather than fierce and revolutionary. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pulpit Studies: Or Aids to Preaching and Meditation If to mark the origin of nations, the rise and fall of empires, the events which agitate states and overthrow kingdoms, be a pleasant study, must it not yield equal gratification to mark the commencement of time, and to trace all the families of the earth back to their first progenitor, since his life is so intimately connected with the state of the world around us, with our intellectual, moral, and social nature, our eternal destiny, and more especially with that plan of redemption on which all our hopes are founded ? His life is full of interest, in comparison of which the achievements of the most illustrious persons, and the events of the most remarkable epochs in history, dwindle into insignificance. This book was released on 2017-12-15 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Southern Methodist Pulpit, 1850, Vol. 3 Dr. W. Reserves his principal strength for the close of his dis course. His peroration consists sometimes of a summing up of his arguments; though it is generally a concentration of the whole subject upon the conscience. He gives you no long string of inferences, suggesting new lines of thought, and opening up new fields of investigation, to spoil the unity and effect of the sermon. But a few earnest appeals, warnings, encouragements, as the case might be - not unfrequently mingled with fervent ejaculations - complete the hour, beyond which the discourse is seldom extended.
