Download or read book The Indiana College Mathematics Competition 2001 2023 written by Adam Coffman and published by Springer. This book was released on 2024-09-04 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gathers problems based on over twenty years of the Indiana College Mathematics Competition, a regional problem-solving contest for teams of undergraduates. Its problems and solutions are accessible to students in a standard college curriculum, not necessarily with Olympiad-level training. Problem sets form the core of Part I, covering myriad aspects of algebra, calculus, number theory, probability, and geometry. Chapters are organized by year, and an index allows easy navigation through specific topics. In Part II, the reader finds detailed solutions to the exercises. With revised solutions designed for a didactical approach, this book can be especially useful as a resource for problem-solving courses in college mathematics or as practice problems for graduate entrance exams. This volume is a sequel to Rick Gillman's "A Friendly Competition," which documented the first 35 years of the competition.

Book A Friendly Mathematics Competition

Download or read book A Friendly Mathematics Competition written by Rick Gillman and published by American Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2023-05-30 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Friendly Mathematics Competition tells the story of the Indiana College Mathematics Competition (ICMC) by presenting the problems, solutions, and results of the first 35 years of the ICMC. The ICMC was organized in reaction to the Putnam Exam—its problems were to be more representative of the undergraduate curriculum, and students could work on them in teams. Participation was originally restricted to the small, private colleges and universities of the state, but was later opened up to students from all of the schools in Indiana. The competition was quickly nicknamed the "Friendly" Competition because of its focus on solving mathematical problems, which brought faculty and students together, rather than on the competitive nature of winning. Organized by year, the problems and solutions in this volume present an excellent archive of information about what has been expected of an undergraduate mathematics major over the past 35 years. With more than 245 problems and solutions, the book is also a must buy for faculty and students interested in problem-solving. The index of problems lists problems in: Algebraic Structures; Analytic Geometry, Arclength, Binomial Coefficients, Derangements, Differentiation, Differential Equations, Diophantine Equations, Enumeration, Field and Ring Theory, Fibonacci Sequences, Finite Sums, Fundamental Theorem of Calculus Geometry, Group Theory, Inequalities, Infinite Series, Integration, Limit Evaluation, Logic, Matrix Algebra, Maxima and Minima Problems, Multivariable Calculus, Number Theory, Permutations, Probability, Polar Coordinates, Polynomials, Real Valued Functions, Riemann Sums, Sequences, Systems of Equations, Statistics, Synthetic Geometry, Taylor Series, Trigonometry, and Volumes.

Book Democracy and Education

Download or read book Democracy and Education written by John Dewey and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1916 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

Book The Stair Step Approach in Mathematics

Download or read book The Stair Step Approach in Mathematics written by Hayk Sedrakyan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-01-23 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended as a teacher’s manual and as an independent-study handbook for students and mathematical competitors. Based on a traditional teaching philosophy and a non-traditional writing approach (the stair-step method), this book consists of new problems with solutions created by the authors. The main idea of this approach is to start from relatively easy problems and “step-by-step” increase the level of difficulty toward effectively maximizing students' learning potential. In addition to providing solutions, a separate table of answers is also given at the end of the book. A broad view of mathematics is covered, well beyond the typical elementary level, by providing more in depth treatment of Geometry and Trigonometry, Number Theory, Algebra, Calculus, and Combinatorics.

Book Almost Impossible Integrals Sums and Series

Download or read book Almost Impossible Integrals Sums and Series written by Cornel Ioan Vălean and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-05-10 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains a multitude of challenging problems and solutions that are not commonly found in classical textbooks. The book begins with a lively foreword by renowned author Paul Nahin and is accessible to those with a good knowledge of calculus from undergraduate students to researchers, and will appeal to all mathematical puzzlers who love a good integral or series.

Book Applied Mathematics A Very Short Introduction

Download or read book Applied Mathematics A Very Short Introduction written by Alain Goriely and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-02-13 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematics is playing an increasing important role in society and the sciences, enhancing our ability to use models and handle data. While pure mathematics is mostly interested in abstract structures, applied mathematics sits at the interface between this abstract world and the world in which we live. This area of mathematics takes its nourishment from society and science and, in turn, provides a unified way to understand problems arising in diverse fields. This Very Short Introduction presents a compact yet comprehensive view of the field of applied mathematics, and explores its relationships with (pure) mathematics, science, and engineering. Explaining the nature of applied mathematics, Alain Goriely discusses its early achievements in physics and engineering, and its development as a separate field after World War II. Using historical examples, current applications, and challenges, Goriely illustrates the particular role that mathematics plays in the modern sciences today and its far-reaching potential. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.
