Narrating, then, the movements of the several columns of Walpole and Seaton, and of the main body under Sir Colin, in the North-West; the action of the NipKanhpurl troops under Jang Bahadur; and of the columns under Rowcroft and Franks in the Azamgarh district and in eastern Oudh; it proceeds to describe the four months' defence of the Alambagh by the illustrious Outram;then, the last movements which preceded Sir Colin's attack on Lakhnao; then, the storming of that city. From this point the narrative returns to the Bengal Presidency proper, and describes the outbreaks in eastern Bengal, in eastern Bihar, in Chutia Nagpur, and their repression; deals then with the difficulties caused mainly by the suicidal action of the Government in western Bihar; gives in full detail the splendid action of Lord Mark Kerr the relief of Azamgarh, one of the two instances on record in which a surprised army defeated the surprisers; proceeds then to the campaign of Lugard, Douglas, and their lieutenants, against Kunwar Singh and his brother Amar Singh, in western Bihar; describes the gallantry of Middleton, and the fertility of resource of, and striking success achieved by, Sir Henry Havelock. On the other hand, a mutiny is on a more limited scale than a rebellion although, like the latter, it is always put down; and it Is in this respect that a revolt differs from both. With a revolt we generally asso ciate the idea of a successful issue to the hostile rising. In very ancient times, ten tribes of Israel revolted from allegiance to the royal house of David; and certain colonies in America revolted last century from Great Britain, under the rule of the regal house of Brunswick. A mutiny is commonly spoken of as an unsuccessful insurrection in the army or navy. Mutineers are usually soldiers or sailors; but a mutiny may arise wherever bodies of men are under. Special disciplinary restraint. Restrictive regulations fret the mutinous spirit. Slaves have mutinied; so have con victs and it would not be difficult to imagine a mutiny of monks. In the ordinary sense of the term, however, there is always a suggestion of sadness associated with mutiny. It implies oppression, daring, defeat, with ever a gleam of benefit secured in the remote issues of despair. Macmillan agreed, at my request, to take over the publication of this history; and it appeared to me that the time had come for thoroughly revising the whole book. In June, 1896, before the revision had proceeded far, the fourth edition was exhausted: but, although it was certain that a considerable time must elapse before the work could be finished, the publishers thought that it would be unwise to print any more copies from the old plates; and indeed it would have been hardly fair to offer intending purchasers a reprint while I was trying to make the book better worth buying. The structure of the work remains unchanged; and only such alterations have been made as appeared necessary. Wherever I could detect an inaccuracy, I have corrected it: wherever the narrative of military operations was deficient in lucidity, I have tried to amend it. I have struck out a few superfluous sentences, have added what, to my apprehension, was wanting, and have modified judgements which, on reconsideration, appeared misleading or unfair. Among the more important alterations and additions are those which relate to the Afghan war, the battle of Sacheta and the events which led up to it, the battle of Chinhat, the defence of the Lucknow Residency, Havelock's campaign, Lord Canning's Oudh proclamation and the vexed question of Sir Colin Campbell's responsibility for the protraction of the war.
