Book Boards That Excel

Download or read book Boards That Excel written by B. Joseph White and published by Berrett-Koehler Publishers. This book was released on 2014-08-18 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a different kind of corporate governance book. With its vivid stories and conversational tone, Boards That Excel is like sitting down with an astute and experienced friend—one who’s passionate about what corporate and nonprofit boards can contribute to their organizations’ success when they set high aspirations, are clear on purpose, and do the right things in the right way. B. Joseph White, an experienced corporate and nonprofit director and a distinguished academic, argues that boards can enable organizations to do great things, but only when directors go well beyond their duty to oversee and monitor management. White offers a road map for governance success based on his experience with two of America’s most successful companies, one public and one private. He knows governance research and distills it to a handful of truly useful insights for boards and directors. He provides clear guidance on the essential work boards must do, and, drawing on behavioral research, he describes how they can ensure the boardroom is a place of good information, thoughtful evaluation, and wise decision making. The book reports on interviews with more than a dozen high-performance board chairs, CEOs, and directors, including Siebel Systems founder Tom Siebel, legendary real estate investor Sam Zell, former Harlem Globetrotters owner Mannie Jackson, GM board chairman and former Cummins chairman and CEO Tim Solso, and volunteer (University of Illinois, University of Michigan) and corporate (Hershey, Bob Evans) director Mary Kay Haben. All speak with unusual candor on what it takes for boards and directors to excel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leaders from both private and public institutions provide a 360-degree view of the challenges and opportunities facing higher education—and offer a manifesto for restoring relevance and respect. Where is the value in higher education? How can higher education restore its relevance and trust with students and parents? Are there really any meaningful differences between public and private higher education? This volume probes those questions and more, exploring the myriad issues that have led many people to question whether higher education is worth the sacrifices it requires of parents and students. Drawing on the experience and expertise of a wide variety of highly renowned academics, respected government officials, and well-grounded individuals from the private sector, this thought-provoking book offers readers simple but powerful ways to evaluate whether prospective colleges and universities merit the very substantial investment of time, abilities, and financial resources they necessitate. Readers will learn what to look for in a college or university and what questions to ask in selecting an institution of higher education. They will also learn how parents, students, academicians, and other stakeholders can advocate for changes to benefit both higher education and the constituency it serves.

Book excerpt: This book is about the coronavirus and the pandemic it spawned, and what this outbreak means for future pandemics. It analyses the official response and sees where improvements can be made, for example, the World Health Organization waited till March to designate the coronavirus a pandemic and a full year before confirming its airborne transmission. The book looks at the specific nature of the virus, its origins and how it was transmitted, why it was so deadly to predisposed individuals, how it compares to previous pandemics, what measures were taken mitigate the disease and how to protect ourselves against it in future. The book also looks into the wider implications of the pandemic and its causes, for example, how climate change and biodiversity are coming into direct conflict with ever expanding needs of population growth and urban sprawl has conspired to bring us into ever closer contact with these viruses, for example, Nipah virus outbreak from the deforestation of the Indonesian Rain Forest, and Ebola from settlement expansion in the Congo. Lastly the book looks at the wider nature of viruses and their historical significance to the tree-of-life of the planet, and their relationship to our evolution. This book is a timely search into the nature of viruses and how they will affect us going forward, and what measures we can take to protect ourselves and mitigate the dangers from future outbreaks by integrating our industrial society into an ecological friendly setting, thereby accommodating these viruses.
