Book excerpt: Happy is our sacrament of water, in that, by washing away the sins of our early blindness, we are set free and admitted into eternal life! A treatise on this matter will not be superfluous; instructing not only such as are just becoming formed (in the faith), but them who, content with having simply believed, without full examination of the grounds of the traditions, carry (in mind), through ignorance, an untried though probable faith. The consequence is, that a viper of the Cainite heresy, lately conversant in this quarter, has carried away a great number with her most venomous doctrine, making it her first aim to destroy baptism. Which is quite in accordance with nature; for vipers and asps and basilisks themselves generally do affect arid and waterless places. But we, little fishes, after the example of our Jesus Christ, are born in water, nor have we safety in any other way than by permanently abiding in water; so that most monstrous creature, who had no right to teach even sound doctrine, knew full well how to kill the little fishes, by taking them away from the water!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The doctrine of Hermogenes has this taint of novelty. He is, in short, a man living in the world at the present time; by his very nature a heretic, and turbulent withal, who mistakes loquacity for eloquence, and supposes impudence to be firmness, and judges it to be the duty of a good conscience to speak ill of individuals. Moreover, he despises God's law in his painting, maintaining repeated marriages, alleges the law of God in defense of lust, and yet despises it in respect of his art. He falsifies by a twofold process-with his cautery and his pen. He is a thorough adulterer, both doctrinally and carnally, since he is rank indeed with the contagion of your marriage hacks, and has also failed in cleaving to the rule of faith as much as the apostle's own Hermogenes. However, never mind the man, when it is his doctrine which I question. He does not appear to acknowledge any other Christ as Lord, though he holds Him in a different way; but by this difference in his faith he really makes Him another being, -nay, he takes from Him everything which is God, since he will not have it that He made all things of nothing. For, turning away from Christians to the philosophers, from the Church to the Academy and the Porch, he learned there from the Stoics how to place Matter (on the same level) with the Lord, just as if it too had existed ever both unborn and unmade, having no beginning at all nor end, out of which, according to him, the Lord afterwards created all things.

Download or read book Tertullian and the Church written by David Rankin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1995-08-17 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Was Tertullian of Cathage a schismatic? How did he view the church and its bishops? How did he understand the exercise of authority within the church? In this study David Rankin sets the writings of Tertullian in the context of the early third century church and the developments it was undergoing in relation to both its structures and its self-understanding. He then discusses Tertullian's own theology of the church, his imagery and his perception of church office and ministry. Tertullian maintained throughout his career a high view of the church, and this in part constituted the motivation for his vitriolic attacks on the church's hierarchy after he had joined the New Prophecy movement. His contribution to the development of the church has often been misunderstood, and this thorough exploration provides a timely reassessment of its nature and importance.

Book excerpt: The following work is the second book of a larger whole by Tertullian, which deals with the subject of modesty in female dress. The idea presented is one that is indisputably Christian in nature, but the application of that idea in the mind of the earliest believers in Christ may seem very foreign to the modern reader. However, one must consider the nearness of the apostolic teaching to those presented here and wonder, did this teaching migrate more in the first 150 years, or the next nearly 2000 years?Upon reading the comments of others about it in the present day, some have found Tertullian's explanation hard to understand, others have called it ascetic, or outright legalism. I, for one, profoundly disagree with these assessments. When the apostle Paul says, “women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self - control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, but with what is proper for women who profess godliness - - with good works” (1 Tim 2:9 - 10), what else is meant except that it is right for a woman to do exactly as stated? Are we living now in a day when obeying a commandment is considered legalism? Yet the logic of Tertullian is sharp and astute, simply providing the explanation of the doctrine, and its reasoning behind it. Rather than a case for legalism, Tertullian uses the issue as an apt means to show the motives and conditions of the heart.“A tree is known by its fruit” (Matt. 12:33), said the Master. Should not a modest woman dress modestly? Should a woman who is not vain not revel in vanity? And yet in many churches, the women of God dress no differently, with no less vanity or frivolity than those that do not know God. Some may want to show how “blessed” they are with their finery, still others want to show “excellence” in all they do so they come in their Sunday Best. Though I understand such logic, it still defies the repeated Scriptural command, as well as the unified view of the early church, the former of which ought to be our uncompromising guide in all manners of life. While simply dressing with conscience is no means of salvation on its own, it ought to adorn those whose hearts have been made tender through the conviction and sanctifying power of the Holy Spirit. What is being presented is not a 'work,' but the fruit of a changed life. This topic, probably considered minor by many, is unique in its ability to expose the tension between faith and works that so many seem to struggle with. However, the Bible is clear, works on their own, or as a means to impress God, or earn His love, are entirely without value. However, works are the natural and inevitable product of a living and vibrant faith. The one produces the other. Likewise, dressing modestly gains nothing for one who is already separated from God – it does not bring them one inch closer – but for one who has been bought with a price, it ought to be their natural desire to be pleasing to their Master, not begrudgingly, but as an act of love and thankfulness.Walking with Christ is not a “fake it until you make it” endeavor. One does not want to be as the pharisees, who outwardly were as “whited sepulchers, but inside, full of dead men's bones” (Matt. 23:27). Looking the part outwardly is just another deception if it is not first found inwardly. In the same manner though, let what is found inside be manifest on the outside.May the Lord use this work of gravity and pointed insight in a day where its message is much needed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a critical evaluation of the doctrine of the Trinity, tracing its development and investigating the intellectual, philosophical and theological background that shaped this influential doctrine of Christianity. Despite the centrality of Trinitarian thought to Christianity and its importance as one of the fundamental tenets that differentiates Christianity from Judaism and Islam, the doctrine is not fully formulated in the canon of Christian scriptural texts. Instead, it evolved through the conflation of selective pieces of scripture with the philosophical and religious ideas of ancient Hellenistic milieu. Marian Hillar analyzes the development of Trinitarian thought during the formative years of Christianity from its roots in ancient Greek philosophical concepts and religious thinking in the Mediterranean region. He identifies several important sources of Trinitarian thought heretofore largely ignored by scholars, including the Greek middle-Platonic philosophical writings of Numenius and Egyptian metaphysical writings and monuments representing divinity as a triune entity.

Book Tertullian Origen and Cassian on Prayer

Download or read book Tertullian Origen and Cassian on Prayer written by Quintus Tertullian and published by . This book was released on 2010-12 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quintus Tertullian (c. 160-c. 220) is distinguished by being the first major Christian thinker to write in the Latin language. According to Eusebius, he was raised in Carthage, the son of a Roman centurion. Following his conversion to the faith, he became an impassioned defender of the rights of Christians. Origen Adamantius (c. 185-254) taught in Alexandria, reviving the catechetical school of Alexandria in which Clement of Alexandria had taught. His translations, commentaries, and theological works mark him as one of the finest minds of early Christianity. John Cassian (c. 360-435), born in Europe, first joined a monastery in Palestine and then traveled to Egypt to learn from the Desert Fathers. After his return to Europe, he founded a monastery in southern France. His writings would eventually influence St. Benedict, who recommended Cassian's texts to his monks. All three writers in this collection offer reflections on the Lord's Prayer, together with practical advice for prayer. This common ground provides a basis for comparisons, along with a rich picture of Christian spirituality in the ancient world. At the same time, the authors address questions about prayer that are still relevant today.

Book Development of Christian Doctrine

Download or read book Development of Christian Doctrine written by Jaroslav Pelikan and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1969-01-11 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of change has assumed great prominence in much of the current ferment in theology, and many of the issues in question can best be interpreted as relating to the validity and limits of doctrinal development. The questions cannot be faced constructively, however, until the development of doctrine has been clearly charted, a historical as well as a theological assignment. In this unique introductory survey—more modest in scope but more scholarly in method than Cardinal Newman’s great programmatic essay of 1845—Mr. Pelikan presents three case histories of the particular doctrines that have crucial points of division among Christians. His cogent analyses of Cyprian on Original Sin, Athanasius on the Virgin Mary, and Hilary on the Holy Spirit demonstrate the interaction between the sacramental life of the Church and the intellectual work of the theologian that consistently marked the development of doctrine by the early Fathers. Thus they clarify some central aspects of the continuing theological and ecumenical debates. Mr. Pelikan, Titus Street Professor of Ecclesiastical History at Yale University, is the author of many books and articles, including a forthcoming full-scale history of the development of doctrine.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quintus Septimius Florens Tertullianus, commonly referred to as Tertullian (c. 160 - c. 220 AD), was raised in Carthage. He was thought to be the son of a Roman centurion, a trained lawyer, and an ordained priest. These assertions rely on the accounts of Eusebius of Caesarea, Church History, and St. Jerome's De viris illustribus (On famous men). Tertullian is the first Christian author to produce an extensive corpus of Latin Christian literature. He also was a notable early Christian apologist and a polemicist against heresy. Tertullian has been called "the father of Latin Christianity"and "the founder of Western theology." Though conservative, he did originate and advance new theology to the early Church. He is perhaps most famous for being the oldest extant Latin writer to use the term Trinity (Latin trinitas),and giving the oldest extant formal exposition of a Trinitarian theology.[Other Latin formulations that first appear in his work are "three Persons, one Substance" as the Latin "tres Personae, una Substantia" . He wrote his trinitarian formula after becoming a Montanist; his ideas were at first rejected as heresy by the church at large, but later accepted as Christian orthodoxyScant reliable evidence exists to inform us about Tertullian's life. Most history about him comes from passing references in his own writings.
