Download or read book Joseph Chamberlain written by Travis L. Crosby and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2011-03-30 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joseph Chamberlain was a dynamic orator, notable reformer and superb parliamentary tactician of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In his early political career Chamberlain was a radically minded Liberal Party member and a supporter of political reform, yet after the Liberal Split, his allegiance changed dramatically when his Liberal Unionist Party entered into alliance with the Conservatives. As Colonial Secretary in Salisbury's government, he was a prime instigator of the Boer War and an important negotiator in the attempts to build an Anglo-German alliance. Ultimately disenchanted with the Conservative leadership of Salisbury and Balfour, he played an integral role in the Unionist Split over the issue of Tariff Reform which ultimately led to Balfour's downfall. Travis Crosby here sheds light on an often-overlooked, but exceptionally influential politician. He argues that Chamberlain was driven primarily by a personal need for power and control - characteristics that went beyond political loyalties. Nevertheless, his accomplishments as chief spokesman for electoral and social reform, and his achievements as Colonial Secretary, were genuine and lasting. This book sheds new light on an influential character who played an important role in the development of British politics.

Book excerpt: Winston Churchill described Joseph Chamberlain as 'the man who made the weather' for twenty years in British politics between the 1880s and the 1900s. This volume contains contributions on every aspect of Chamberlain's career, including international and cultural perspectives hitherto ignored by his many biographers. It breaks his career into three aspects: his career as an international statesman, defender of British interests and champion of imperial federation; his role as a national leader, opposing Gladstone's crusade for Irish home rule by forming an alliance with the Conservatives, campaigning for social reform and finally advocating a protectionist economic policy to promote British business; and the aspect for which he is still celebrated in his adopted city, as the provider of sanitation, gas lighting, clean water and cultural achievement for Birmingham – a model of civic regeneration that still inspires modern politicians such as Michael Heseltine, Tristram Hunt and David Willetts.

Book Imperialism and Social Classes

Download or read book Imperialism and Social Classes written by Joseph A. Schumpeter and published by Ludwig von Mises Institute. This book was released on 1972 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joseph Schumpeter was not a member of the Austrian School, but he was an enormously creative classical liberal, and this 1919 book shows him at his best. He presents a theory of how states become empires and applies his insight to explaining many historical episodes. His account of the foreign policy of Imperial Rome reads like a critique of the US today. The second essay examines class mobility and political dynamics within a capitalistic society. Overall, a very important contribution to the literature of political economy.

Book Joseph Chamberlain

  • Author : Peter Fraser
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 1967
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 384 pages

Download or read book Joseph Chamberlain written by Peter Fraser and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No name in British politics has been more often denounced in recent times than that of Chamberlain. Mr. Fraser believes that Joseph Chamberlain, the founder of the Birmingham dynasty, has been sufficiently cleared of the grosser calumnies of his detractors. He has therefore used an entirely new approach to his subject, which should do much to bring him into true perspective. Believing that his policies can only be interpreted when viewed against the distinct intellectual background of his times, the author has made use of a wealth of private papers, only recently made available for publication, in order to illuminate the great political struggles of Chamberlain's stormy career in the light of the immediate reasoning of the protagonists themselves. -- Taken from book jacket flap.

Book The Imperial Experience

Download or read book The Imperial Experience written by C.C. Eldridge and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 1996-10-02 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines attitudes towards empire and the creation and perpetuation of a British world-view during the years 1834-1924. Besides focusing on the usual Victorian and Edwardian novelists and poets, surveys of popular culture and anti-empire views are also included. By adopting a longer chronological context, the high level of continuity in beliefs and actions throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries is highlighted. As a result, the period is viewed as a dramatic episode in a much longer story.

The print series, edited by David C. Douglas, is a magisterial survey of British history, covering the years 500 to 1914 and including around 5,500 primary sources, all selected by leading historians Editors. It has over the years become an indispensable resource for generations of students, researchers and lecturers. EHD is now available in its entirety online. Bringing EHD into the digital age has been a long and complex process. To provide you with first-rate, intelligent searchability, Routledge have teamed up with the Institute of Historical Research (one of the research institutes that make up the School of Advanced Study, University of London http://www.history.ac.uk) to produce EHD Online. The IHR's team of experts have fully indexed the documents, using an exhaustive historical thesaurus developed by the Royal Historical Society for its Bibliography of British and Irish History. The sources include treaties, statutes, declarations, government and cabinet proceedings, military dispatches, orders, acts, sermons, newspaper articles, pamphlets, personal and official letters, diaries and more. Each section of documents and many of the documents themselves are accompanied by editorial commentary. The sources cover a wide spectrum of topics, from political and constitutional issues to social, economic, religious as well as cultural history."--[Résumé de l'éditeur].
