Book excerpt: What makes Darjeeling tea, Pashmina shawl, Monsooned Malabar Arabica coffee and Chanderi saree special? Why is it that some goods derive their uniqueness through their inherent linkage to a place? In a pioneering study, this book explores this intriguing question in the Indian context across 199 registered goods with geographical indications, linked with their place of origin. It argues that the origin of these goods is attributed to a distinctive ecology that brews in a particular place. The attributes of their origin further endorse their unique geographical indications through legal channels. Drawing from a variety of disciplines including geography, history, sociology, handicrafts, paintings, and textiles, the author also examines the Geographical Indications Act of 1999, and shows how it has created a scope to identify, register and protect those goods, be they natural, agricultural, or manufactured. The work presents a new perspective on the indigenous diversities and offers an original understanding of the geography and history of India. Lucid and accessible, with several illustrative maps, this book will be useful to scholars and researchers in the social sciences, environmental studies, development studies, law, trade and history.

Book A Local History of Global Capital

Download or read book A Local History of Global Capital written by Tariq Omar Ali and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-05-15 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before the advent of synthetic fibers and cargo containers, jute sacks were the preferred packaging material of global trade, transporting the world's grain, cotton, sugar, tobacco, coffee, wool, guano, and bacon. Jute was the second-most widely consumed fiber in the world, after cotton. While the sack circulated globally, the plant was cultivated almost exclusively by peasant smallholders in a small corner of the world: the Bengal delta. This book examines how jute fibers entangled the delta's peasantry in the rhythms and vicissitudes of global capital. Taking readers from the nineteenth-century high noon of the British Raj to the early years of post-partition Pakistan in the mid-twentieth century, Tariq Omar Ali traces how the global connections wrought by jute transformed every facet of peasant life: practices of work, leisure, domesticity, and sociality; ideas and discourses of justice, ethics, piety, and religiosity; and political commitments and actions. Ali examines how peasant life was structured and restructured with oscillations in global commodity markets, as the nineteenth-century period of peasant consumerism and prosperity gave way to debt and poverty in the twentieth century. A Local History of Global Capital traces how jute bound the Bengal delta's peasantry to turbulent global capital, and how global commodity markets shaped everyday peasant life and determined the difference between prosperity and poverty, survival and starvation.

Book Lost Opportunities

Download or read book Lost Opportunities written by S. P. Sinha (Brigadier.) and published by Lancer Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Northeast India has been beset with insurgencies for more than fifty years. The Nagas rebelled in the early 1950s, and since then, insurgency in some form or the other has spread to all the states of the northeast, popularly known as the Seven Sisters. This book takes a critical look at the many insurgencies in this strategic region and reviews their genesis, motivations, and characteristics. Why have these persisted despite interventions by the state and civil society? Over the years, the insurgencies have developed external linkages, which have only complicated matters. The book also critically examines the government's response and traces the development of counter-insurgency strategies, from finding a military solution to winning the hearts and minds of the populace. It is a fascinating but sad story of missed opportunities.

Book excerpt: With the liberation of Goa, Daman and Diu from the Portuguese, the people of these territories entered once again into the mainstream of Indian society. Goa now has the dual task of breaking from the bleak past and of participating in the process of nation-building and economic development. Professor R.N. Saksena attempts in this book some aspects of the problem of emotional and national integration of the Goans. The study was sponsored by RPC, Planning Commission. It is based on the analysis of considerable secondary data and of the responses obtained from a sample of 1200 persons drawn from Old Goa and New Conquests. Professor Saksena examines the questions related to language, economic reforms, political participation, and merger. In doing so he makes use of history, aggregate data, and people’s responses to a battery of attitude questions. It emerges from his analysis that while Konkani was recommended as the state language in preference to Portuguese, a majority favoured Hindi as the national language. As medium of instruction, both Marathi and Konkani have received greater support than English. A favourable response to governmental programmes of economic reform, high rate of political participation, and a majority support for Hindi as national language are indicative of Goa’s commitment to secular and democratic ideals of Indian polity. While accepting the new status within the Indian Union, Goans are keen to retain their identity as a separate state and forge ahead on the path of development. The book affirms that Goans have entered into the mainstream.
