Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Imperial Conference, Vol. 2 of 2: A History and Study Belated wisdom, learning from the event, may easily suggest that Mr. Chamberlain made a fatal mistake in deciding to rely upon the conversion of the Unionist Party to his policy, instead of at once setting about the creation of a new political party, which by this time might have become a paramount force. In general it can be stated now with confidence that the victory of Tariff Reform has been delayed by a popular distrust of the Unionist Party rather than by any abiding dislike of Mr. Chamberlain's policy, which by nature is congenial to British instincts. But in one respect Mr. Chamberlain was handicapped by circumstances which could not be ignored or evaded. In 1903 the people of Britain were mostly Free Traders; not indeed by conviction - few of them ever having been concerned to examine the matter - but by tradition, which counts for almost as much. The protagonist of Preference appealed to. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Imperial Conference of 1911 From Within The first chapter of this book containing, as it mainly does, short personal sketches of several of those members of the present British Cabinet who took part in the last Imperial Conference, is chiefly intended for Colonial readers, to whom I have hoped to convey some definite impressions of the personality of men whom they have never seen, but of whose acts and utterances they read so much. My explanation and criticism of the methods of the Conference, and of the work it did, will be found in the second and third chapters. In the fourth chapter, which, it will be seen, comprises the major portion of the book, I have dealt somewhat fully with the proposal New Zealand made at the Conference for a Representative Imperial Council, and with the attitude of the present British Government towards that proposal. Book Forging a British World of Trade

Download or read book Forging a British World of Trade written by David Thackeray and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-31 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brexit is likely to lead to the largest shift in Britain's economic orientation in living memory. Some have argued that leaving the EU will enable Britain to revive markets in Commonwealth countries with which it has long-standing historical ties. Their opponents maintain that such claims are based on forms of imperial nostalgia which ignore the often uncomfortable historical trade relations between Britain and these countries, as well as the UK's historical role as a global, rather than chiefly imperial, economy. Forging a British World of Trade explores how efforts to promote a 'British World' system, centred on promoting trade between Britain and the Dominions, grew and declined in influence between the 1880s and 1970s. At the beginning of the twentieth century many people from London, to Sydney, Auckland, and Toronto considered themselves to belong to culturally British nations. British politicians and business leaders invested significant resources in promoting trade with Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and South Africa out of a perception that these were great markets of the future. However, ideas about promoting trade between 'British' peoples were racially exclusive. From the 1920s onwards, colonized and decolonizing populations questioned and challenged the basis of British World networks, making use of alternative forms of international collaboration promoted firstly by the League of Nations, and then by the United Nations. Schemes for imperial collaboration amongst ethnically 'British' peoples were hollowed out by the actions of a variety of political and business leaders across Asia and Africa who reshaped the functions and identity of the Commonwealth.
