Book excerpt: The primary grades have historically focused the majority of reading instruction on phonics, word recognition, and fluency. This study concentrated effort on instructing primary-aged students how to become active readers in order to improve their reading comprehension. Visualization was the specific strategy used throughout this six week study conducted with twenty-two students in a rural school district setting. Data collection involved both qualitative and quantitative data. The students showed an increase in test scores as well as enthusiasm and engagement during reading time. The study suggests the appropriateness of instructing primary students in comprehension strategies.

Book The Effects of Embedded Questions on the Reading Comprehension of Second Grade Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders ADS

Download or read book The Effects of Embedded Questions on the Reading Comprehension of Second Grade Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders ADS written by Lindsay Sessor and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The ability to comprehend what one has read is a critical skill not only for academic achievement but also for daily independent functioning. This study examines the effectiveness of embedded questions, for three elementary students with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) in order to improve reading comprehension performance. An alternating treatments design was employed in order to examine the effects of oral embedded questions, written embedded questions, and no embedded questions on reading comprehension assessed by a 7-item posttest consisting of wh- questions (e.g., who, what, where, how, etc) following the presentation of an appropriate leveled reading passage . Findings indicated that neither oral nor written embedded questions did not consistently improve reading comprehension for any of the participants. Repeated reading and feedback were implemented for two of the three participants due to variability of performance. However, results show that there may be some evidence supporting the use of repeated reading and feedback to improve comprehension. Limitations and implications for future research are also discussed.

This book was released on 2013 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This case study explores the impact of visualization and drama-based techniques on the reading comprehension of a fourth-grade student with a cognitive disability. Existing literature has indicated that reading comprehension is an area of struggle for many students and that visualizing and using drama can be highly effective in improving understanding of a text. Eighteen interventions were designed to work on three strategies, using a graphic organizer to document sensory information, drawing a scene from a story, and finally acting out a scene using props over the course of 6 weeks. This case study found that visualization and drama-based strategies are highly effective in improving reading comprehension and other areas of reading for students with cognitive disabilities improving recalling and fluency skills.

Book excerpt: Imagery and Text: A Dual Coding Theory of Reading and Writing presents, for the first time, a unified theory of both reading and writing that derives from and is completely consistent with the Dual Coding Theory of cognition, one of the most influential and empirically sound theories of cognition ever developed. This is the first book to take a systematic theoretical approach to all of the central issues of literacy, including decoding, comprehension, and memory in reading; and planning, drafting, and reviewing in writing. Additionally, theoretical accounts are provided for such profound and elusive literacy concepts as meaning, engagement, inspiration, and persona. Dual Coding Theory is unique in theorizing how both verbal and nonverbal cognition are woven throughout all aspects of literacy. An outstanding advancement in understanding literacy, Imagery and Text: A Dual Coding Theory of Reading and Writing: * Explains the major aspects of both reading and writing from an empirically well-established cognitive theory that embraces both language and mental imagery, emphasizing the powerful role of nonlinguistic knowledge and mental imagery in literacy; * Offers a human alternative to current computer-based theories of cognition and literacy derived from artificial intelligence, treating literacy as an essentially human activity that includes imagery and affect; * Provides moment-by-moment accounts of both the reading process and the writing process and comparisons with other theories; and * Presents an extensive review of educational research on the application of dual coding theory.

Book Colour Coding for Learners with Autism

Download or read book Colour Coding for Learners with Autism written by Adele Devine and published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. This book was released on 2014-04-21 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children on the autism spectrum are often highly visual learners, making colour a powerful and motivating learning tool. This book explains how colour coding helps young people with autism to generalise lessons already learnt. For example, assigning the colour aqua to all personal care activities or the colour purple to timetabling and transitions establishes clear, visual categories. This allows children to draw on learnt experiences, which creates a sense of order, reduces anxiety, and can aid communication, understanding emotions, organisation, coping with change and diversifying diet. A wealth of tried-and-tested printable resources to enable the practical application of colour coding in the classroom and at home are included on a CD-ROM. With colourful illustrations and resources, Colour Coding for Learners with Autism is an effective, must-have teaching tool for anyone involved in the education of young people with autism.

Book The Effects of Symbol Imagery Instruction Versus Visualizing verbalizing Instruction on the Reading Comprehension of Middle School English Language Learners with Specific Learning Disabilities

Download or read book The Effects of Symbol Imagery Instruction Versus Visualizing verbalizing Instruction on the Reading Comprehension of Middle School English Language Learners with Specific Learning Disabilities written by Jennifer Bickford-Rivera and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study examined the effects of two scientifically based academic reading interventions upon students who had no previous opportunity for interventions prior to qualification for special education. The Lindamood-Bell Learning Process offers two programs to intensively intervene with students having difficulty in reading. One of the programs, Seeing Stars, focuses on the development of symbol imagery in phonemic awareness. The other, Visualizing-Verbalizing, develops students' concept imagery. This study compared the effectiveness of the two programs on reading comprehension for middle school English language (EL) learners eligible for special education in the category of Specific Learning Disabilities. In this quantitative study, the independent variable was the method of instruction (i.e., symbol imagery instruction versus visualize-verbalize instruction). The dependent variable was the pre-post change of students' reading comprehension as measured by the Basic Reading Inventory, Ekwall/Shanker Reading Inventory, and the Gray Oral Reading Test (GORT). Overall, the results show reading comprehension growth for most students using either intervention. Except for three students, over the six-week instructional period, participants showed from six months to two years growth, with the mean growth over both intervention groups being nine months. Results suggest that both reading interventions can have a powerful positive impact with English language learners eligible for special education. Key words: Phonemic awareness, symbol imagery, visualizing and verbalizing Strategy, scientifically based interventions.

Download or read book Reading Comprehension written by Gary Woolley and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-05-21 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading Comprehension: Assisting Children with Learning Difficulties examines the complex nature of reading comprehension. It introduces a model for classifying reading comprehension based on an expanded Simple View of Reading. Issues related to assessment, diagnosis, and remediation of reading comprehension difficulties are discussed and translated into clear recommendations to inform reading intervention design and practice. It gives an informed understanding as to why reading comprehension is difficult for some children with learning disabilities such as ADHD, autism, language difficulties and dyslexia. From leading literacy research, the book develops a deeper understanding of thinking processes that facilitate comprehension at the word, discourse, and metacognitive levels. Children will benefit from the introduction of evidence-based methods for teaching reading comprehension using structured multiple-strategy frameworks.
