Book excerpt: The primary grades have historically focused the majority of reading instruction on phonics, word recognition, and fluency. This study concentrated effort on instructing primary-aged students how to become active readers in order to improve their reading comprehension. Visualization was the specific strategy used throughout this six week study conducted with twenty-two students in a rural school district setting. Data collection involved both qualitative and quantitative data. The students showed an increase in test scores as well as enthusiasm and engagement during reading time. The study suggests the appropriateness of instructing primary students in comprehension strategies.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The ability to comprehend what one has read is a critical skill not only for academic achievement but also for daily independent functioning. This study examines the effectiveness of embedded questions, for three elementary students with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) in order to improve reading comprehension performance. An alternating treatments design was employed in order to examine the effects of oral embedded questions, written embedded questions, and no embedded questions on reading comprehension assessed by a 7-item posttest consisting of wh- questions (e.g., who, what, where, how, etc) following the presentation of an appropriate leveled reading passage . Findings indicated that neither oral nor written embedded questions did not consistently improve reading comprehension for any of the participants. Repeated reading and feedback were implemented for two of the three participants due to variability of performance. However, results show that there may be some evidence supporting the use of repeated reading and feedback to improve comprehension. Limitations and implications for future research are also discussed.

Existing literature has indicated that reading comprehension is an area of struggle for many students and that visualizing and using drama can be highly effective in improving understanding of a text. Eighteen interventions were designed to work on three strategies, using a graphic organizer to document sensory information, drawing a scene from a story, and finally acting out a scene using props over the course of 6 weeks. This case study found that visualization and drama-based strategies are highly effective in improving reading comprehension and other areas of reading for students with cognitive disabilities improving recalling and fluency skills.

Book excerpt: The study examined the effects of two scientifically based academic reading interventions upon students who had no previous opportunity for interventions prior to qualification for special education. The Lindamood-Bell Learning Process offers two programs to intensively intervene with students having difficulty in reading. One of the programs, Seeing Stars, focuses on the development of symbol imagery in phonemic awareness. The other, Visualizing-Verbalizing, develops students' concept imagery. This study compared the effectiveness of the two programs on reading comprehension for middle school English language (EL) learners eligible for special education in the category of Specific Learning Disabilities. In this quantitative study, the independent variable was the method of instruction (i.e., symbol imagery instruction versus visualize-verbalize instruction). The dependent variable was the pre-post change of students' reading comprehension as measured by the Basic Reading Inventory, Ekwall/Shanker Reading Inventory, and the Gray Oral Reading Test (GORT). Overall, the results show reading comprehension growth for most students using either intervention. Except for three students, over the six-week instructional period, participants showed from six months to two years growth, with the mean growth over both intervention groups being nine months. Results suggest that both reading interventions can have a powerful positive impact with English language learners eligible for special education.
