In response, air traffic control systems are being modernized to provide automated tools to overcome current-day workload limits. Highly accurate aircraft trajectory predictions are a critical element of the automated tools envisioned as part of the evolution of today's air traffic management system in the United States, known as NextGen. However, automation accuracy is limited due to the effects of external variables: "errors" such as wind forecast uncertainties. The focus of the Trajectory Prediction Uncertainty simulation at NASA Ames Research center were the effects of varied levels of accuracy on operator's tool use during a time based metering task. The simulation's environment also provided a means to examine the relationship between an operator's reliance strategy and underlying trust attitude. Operators were found to exhibit an underlying trust attitude distinct from their reliance strategies, supporting the strategic use of the Human-Automation trust scale in an air traffic control environment.

Book excerpt: Since the birth of commercial aviation, the applications and benefits of aircraft have grown immensely. This, in perfect synchrony with the average increase of purchasing power of the society, has rocketed the number of aircraft flying the skies. This increase comes at a cost, both in environmental and airspace capacity aspects. This thesis works towards the alleviation of the issues caused by the high number of flights, proposing concepts and mechanisms to safely increase the airspace capacity whilst minimising the environmental impact of aviation. This incredibly complex and neverending pursuit is omnipresent in the literature. One promising topic is the four dimensional (4D) trajectory optimisation with higher levels of automation.The research in this PhD thesis proposes an integrated framework for trajectory optimisation, trajectory prediction and parameter estimation, with which new air traffic management concepts can be assessed. This framework has the flexibility to optimise trajectories ranging from a free-flight to a very strict route structure, from a complete freedom at the vertical profile to a specific adherence to flight levels, etc. The 4D optimisation strategy results in a trajectory that complies with the scenario characteristics, which minimises a given functional objective such as the operational cost, time, fuel, etc. Furthermore, the same framework is used in a novel strategy to perform adaptive trajectory prediction (with conformance monitoring), and to estimate unknown parameters of an aircraft.To resolve this problem, an optimal control problem is formulated and converted into a non-linear programming (NLP) problem with direct collocation methods, and numerically resolved by an NLP solver. A comprehensive software architecture is presented, taking benefit from the best of two worlds to enable the flexibility and genericity of the developed optimisation framework: an object-oriented software coding language (C++) and a very powerful algebraic modelling language (GAMS).Based on this optimisation framework, the thesis produces operationally relevant results, demonstrating that the framework can cope with a variety of problems, and contributing to the ultimate goal of safely increasing airspace capacity and air traffic efficiency. Illustrative examples are presented focussed on the departure phase within a terminal manoeuvring area. First, an assessment of the efficiency of required times of arrival as a ways to increase air traffic capacity is presented, providing results on the cost in terms of fuel and time of imposing these time requirements within a TMA (which can get to surprisingly low figures), and its effectiveness for traffic separation. Second, the implementation of an aircraft separation methodology is presented, where an intruder trajectory is predicted and the ownship calculates its own optimal trajectory that deviates from it. A conformance monitoring strategy is implemented to ensure that the separation is maintained throughout the flight, acknowledging deviations, and reacting accordingly. Third, the prediction of the intruder trajectory is enhanced by the estimation of an equivalent mass using known past states. An impressive accuracy is achieved early after the beginning of the flight. Finally, the implementation of a multi-aircraft separation strategy is presented, where multiple aircraft are simultaneously optimised in the same optimisation problem, all whilst maintaining separation between them. The complexity of the alignment of aircraft coordinates for a fair comparison is tackled from a novel perspective.Conclusively, the different strategies for aircraft separation are compared, and quite surprisingly the best results for each strategy are quite similar. Indeed, the increase in operational cost that the different strategies present (when compared to the individual optimal trajectory) is negligible and alledgedly better than the current air traffic control separation paradigm.

Book excerpt: A piloted simulation experiment was conducted to document the trajectory errors associated with use of an airplane's Flight Management System (FMS) in conjunction with a ground-based ATC automation system, Center-TRACON Automation System (CTAS) in the terminal area. Three different arrival procedures were compared: current-day (vectors from ATC), modified (current-day with minor updates), and data link with FMS lateral navigation. Six active airline pilots flew simulated arrivals in a fixed-base simulator. The FMS-datalink procedure resulted in the smallest time and path distance errors, indicating that use of this procedure could reduce the CTAS arrival-time prediction error by about half over the current-day procedure. Significant sources of error contributing to the arrival-time error were crosstrack errors and early speed reduction in the last 2-4 miles before the final approach fix. Pilot comments were all very positive, indicating the FMS-datalink procedure was easy to understand and use, and the increased head-down time and workload did not detract from the benefit. Book excerpt: The Air Traffic Management (ATM) paradigm is shifting towards a scenario where Trajectory Predictors (TP) play a key role. They rely on Aircraft Performance Models (APM), mathematical models of the performance related characteristics of aircraft. The widespread use of non-coventional take-off procedures, such as the flexible thrust method, has arose the necessity of modelling them to keep fidelity in take-off trajectory predictions. This project, carried out with Boeing Research & Technology Europe (BR&TE) and upon request of EUROCONROL, arises in response to the current lack in the APM market of a validated methodology to model reduced thrust operations. Its goal is to propose a complete and validated model to compute reduced thrust using Assumed Temperature (AT). The proposed methodology is composed by a model of AT and a thrust model properly validated for flexible thrust computations. To accomplish this goal, a new specification of the AT model that is being developed by BR&TE has been implemented, based upon a set of improvements suggested by EUROCONTROL. In order to determine a valid thrust model for flexible thrust computations, EUROCONTROL'S Base of Aricraft Data (BADA) and Aircraft Noise Performance (ANP) APMs have been validated. These validations have been carried out with different official Boeing's performance software: the Standard Take-off Analysis Software (STAS) and the Boeing Climbout Program (BCOP). As a result of the study different order polynomials that model the AT as a function of the take-off conditions have been produced. In addition, it has been concluded that ANP contains a valid thrust model for flexible thrust calculations, whereas the current version of BADA is not valid to compute thrust during the take-off phase. A first application of this method has been put into effect by developing a prototype of a Take-off Trajectory Predictor (TTP) that implements the flexible thrust model. This prototype is intended to be integrated in Boeing's trajectory computation infrastructure in the future as a take-off and landing module and needs to be improved, validated with Boeing's performance software and integrated as future work.

Book excerpt: The growth in traffic increased the pressure on the environmental sustainability of air transport. In this context, many research effort has been devoted to minimise the environmental impact in the different phases of flight. Continuous descent operations, ideally performed with the engines at idle from the cruise altitude to right before landing, have shown to reduce fuel, noise nuisance and gaseous emissions if compared to conventional descents. However, this type of operations suffer from a well known drawback: the loss of predictability from the air traffic control point of view in terms of overfly times at the different waypoints of the route. Due to this loss of predictability, air traffic controllers require large separation buffers, thus reducing the capacity of the airport. Previous works investigating this issue showed that the ability to meet a controlled time of arrival at a metering fix could enable continuous descent operations while simultaneously maintaining airport throughput. In this context, the planning and guidance functions of state-of-the-art flight management systems need to be modernised. On-board trajectory planners capable to generate an optimal trajectory plan satisfying time constraints introduced during the flight are seldom, mainly because the real-time optimisation of aircraft trajectories is still elusive. Furthermore, the time scale and spatial resolution of the wind forecasts used by these trajectory planners are far from being adequate to generate accurate flight time predictions. Finally, there exist guidance strategies capable to accurately comply with time constraints enforced at a certain fix in the trajectory plan, yet they are not specifically designed to minimise the environmental impact. This PhD thesis aims at investigating fast optimisation techniques to enable real-time updates of the optimal trajectory plan subject to time constraints during the descent; wind networking concepts to generate more accurate and up-to-date wind forecasts and, consequently, time predictions; and more robust an efficient guidance strategies to reduce the environmental impact at the maximum extent while complying with the time constraints of the trajectory plan. First, the feasible time window at a metering fix that could be achieved during a descent requiring neither thrust nor speed brakes usage is quantified as a function of the aircraft states (altitude, distance to the metering fix and airspeed), aiming to assess the feasibility of guidance strategies that take advantage of time and energy management concepts. Then, the performance of four of these guidance strategies is compared in terms of environmental impact mitigation and ability to satisfy operational constraints. Results from the comparison reveal that model predictive control, a strategy based on a frequent re-calculation of the optimal trajectory plan during the execution of the descent, is the most robust in terms of energy and time deviation at the metering fix, providing at the same time excellent environmental impact mitigation figures. However, the execution time required to solve a rigorous trajectory optimisation problem at each re-calculation instant remains a critical limitation for practical applications. In order to address this issue, a variant of the model predictive control strategy that allows for fast updates of the optimal trajectory plan based on parametric sensitivities is proposed, which shows analogous results yet halving the time needed to update the optimal trajectory plan. Finally, the potential benefits of using wind observations broadcast by nearby aircraft to reconstruct the wind profile downstream right before updating the optimal trajectory plan when using model predictive control is also investigated. Promising results show that the combination of model predictive control with wind networking concepts could enable optimal descents without degrading the capacity of the airport.

ATC is a high stakes environment where complex automation is being introduced while the human operator has the legal responsibility. With increasing demands on productivity in various industries (as also in ATC), automation is introduced for efficiency, maintaining safety, and to keep the workload of the human operator within acceptable limits. However, previous research has shown that automation may cause negative effects on the human operator and performance, such as forcing the operator out of the control loop, which might lead to problems or confusion. Previous research suggests a need for strengthening human-automation collaboration where automation is seen as a team member to keep the operator in the loop. In order to achieve such teamwork, the design of the automation needs to be human-centred, i.e. that the automation is designed for the underlying need of the operator. The aim of this dissertation is to explore teamwork in ATC from several angles to understand how the air traffic controllers are working in current ATC environments and how automation could be designed to support human-automation teamwork. The included studies rely on interviews, simulations, and questionnaires, all with operational air traffic controllers as participants. The results indicate that for both human-human teamwork and human-automation teamwork, teamwork factors such as adaptability and mutual performance monitoring (knowing what the other team members are doing) are important for the work performance in current ATC environments, where mutual performance monitoring is especially important during stressful situations. When designing automation, lessons learned from human-human teamwork should be considered. The work within the scope of this dissertation identifies and concerns two human-automation teamwork aspects: boundary awareness and implicit communication. These are proposed to support the operator’s knowledge about the automation and the communication flow between the operator and the automation. Boundary awareness is the operator’s knowledge of the automation’s abilities, its boundaries (what it can or cannot manage), and about consequences if it would go outside of these boundaries. Implicit communication is the unspoken or implied small cues that the operator and the automation can use to communicate with each other. It is proposed that implicit communication can be based on the work patterns of the operator. The knowledge gained through the work in this dissertation can be used as a foundation for further research and design of automation regarding operator knowledge about the automation boundaries and the communication within the team. Denna avhandling utforskar teamwork mellan människa och automation inom flygtrafikledning. Flygtrafikledning är en högriskmiljö där komplex automation introduceras samtidigt som den mänskliga operatören har det juridiska ansvaret. Med ökade krav på produktivitet inom olika industrier (och även inom flygtrafikledning) så introduceras automation för effektiviteten, för att bibehålla säkerheten och för att hålla arbetsbelastningen för den mänskliga operatören inom acceptabla gränser. Tidigare forskning har däremot visat att automationen kan orsaka negativa effekter på den mänskliga operatören och på prestationen, som till exempel att tvinga ut operatören utanför kontrolloopen vilket leder till problem och förvirring. Tidigare forskning föreslår ett starkare samarbete mellan människa och automation där automationen är sedd som en teammedlem för att behålla operatören i loopen. För att uppnå ett sådant samarbete behöver automation vara människo-centrerad, att automation med andra ord är designad för operatörens underliggande behov. Syftet med denna avhandling är att utforska teamwork från olika vinklar inom flygtrafikledning för att förstå hur flygledare jobbar i nuvarande flygtrafikledningsmiljöer och för att förstå hur automation skulle kunna designas för att stödja teamwork mellan människa och automation. Studierna som denna avhandling bygger på har använt sig av intervjuer, simuleringar och enkäter, alla med operativa flygtrafikledare som deltagare. Resultatet tyder på att för både människa-människa teamwork och människa-automations teamwork så är teamwork faktorer så som flexibilitet och ömsesidig övervakning av teammedlemmarnas prestationer viktiga där övervakning av teammedlemmarnas prestationer är speciellt viktigt under stressiga situationer. När man designar automation bör man ta lärdom från teamwork mellan människor. Vidare så identifierar och behandlar arbetet inom denna avhandling två aspekter gällande teamwork mellan människa och automation: gränsmedvetenhet och implicit kommunikation. Dessa aspekter är föreslagna vi att stötta operatörens kunskap om automationen och kommunikationsflödet mellan operatören och automationen. Gränsmedvetenhet är operatörens kunskap om automationens förmågor, dess gränser och dess konsekvenser när automation går utanför dessa gränser. Implicit kommunikation är de outtalade eller implicita ledtrådar som operatören och automationen kan använda för att kommunicera med varandra. Det är föreslaget att implicit kommunikation kan baseras på arbetsmönster från operatören eller från prediktioner från automationen. Kunskapen från denna avhandling kan användas som ett underlagför vidare forskning och design av automation gällande operatörers kunskap om automationens gränser och kommunikationen inom teamet.
