Book excerpt: This single-case study compared the effects of a typical practice baseline phase to those of a treatment phase. Seven students with learning disabilities (LD) in Grades 4 and 5 participated in the two-school-site study. Each student had basic word-reading proficiency and a distinct deficit in comprehension. Baseline lessons consisted of text reading with corrective feedback, a text-based summary with corrective feedback, and a daily quiz. In treatment, students read text with corrective feedback, used a graphic organizer to study and teach the content to the instructor, and completed a daily quiz. The baseline and treatment lessons were influenced by direct, systematic, and explicit instruction. Analysis indicates that an experimental effect was present for all students when the daily quiz results for baseline and treatment phases are compared. Percentage of non-overlapping data (PND) results were 100% for five students, which is characterized as a highly effective treatment according to single-case standards. Two students had minimal overlap between baseline and treatment, but their scores indicate that the treatment was effective at improving informational text learning. On a cumulative pre/post social studies test, students at School A improved from 26% to 56%, and at School B, students scored 28% on pretest and 81% on posttest. Results indicate that treatment components that were previously effective for students with LD in secondary school are promising for enhancing informational text learning for students in upper elementary school. A social validity questionnaire indicated that students perceived graphic organizers as an efficacious practice for improving learning potential.

Research has shown an increase in integrating content areas such as social studies and science with literacy instruction. The purpose of this action research study aims to examine instructional practices that can be used to assist with main idea comprehension. I specifically looked if a graphic organizer helps improve main idea comprehension of social studies texts and if providing a choice between graphic organizer, traditional or digital, to students who receive special education services enhances their ability to determine the main idea of a text. I worked with a group of six students and provided instruction on how to use both a traditional and digital graphic organizer. Half of the six students received special education services. The students used each of the organizers to help identify the main idea of five texts on westward expansion. Additionally, the students completed Lesson Reflection Student Interviews and Post Student Interviews. Findings demonstrated that it was not clear whether the traditional or digital graphic organizer helped more than the other, but the findings do show that with explicit instruction on the use of a graphic organizer and the skill of main idea, their comprehension does increase. Additionally, when given the choice all six students chose to use the digital graphic organizer. The study also examined if providing a choice to students with special education services increased their ability to determine the main idea of the text. When given the choice, the three students chose the digital graphic organizer and all were successful. The results indicate that students may benefit from main idea instruction and the use of a graphic organizer, but the benefits of using a specific type of graphic organizer may differ depending on the student.

Book excerpt: In an urban Midwestern school district, six students with special needs participated in a six-week study which evaluated the effects of using think-alouds and graphic organizers to improve their inferencing abilities and overall reading comprehension. Prior to the research, these six students were given two formal assessments. These assessments measured students' inferencing abilities along with their ability to comprehend both implicit and explicit questions about the text. Research began with students observing as the teacher modeled the use of think-alouds while reading text. Students then gradually began to participate in the think-aloud process and eventually were able to use think-alouds with graphic organizers as they read various texts with a partner. Throughout the research, students were given four different informal quizzes to measure progress. At the end of the study, students were given the same assessments as those prior to the study, however, they were asked to read different passages. The results showed that all students made progress in the assessment in which they were to answer implicit and explicit questions. However, one student did not make progress in the assessment that measured his ability to make inferences in the text. The purpose of this study was to document the relationship between using a graphic organizer and increasing reading comprehension. The study employed a single-subject multiple baseline design across participants to evaluate if the use of a graphic organizer impacted the correctness of answering wh-questions for grade-level social studies content. Participants included four eighth grade students in an urban public school who had been diagnosed with ASD. Results supported research by showing an increase in comprehension skills with the use of a graphic organizer.
