In the introductory part, the paper clearly describes the concept of punishment. The behaviorism and social cultural theory perspectives to punishment are also discussed in this paper. The reformation, retribution, deterrence, attribution and social control theories of punishment are also identified and comprehensively explained. On the other hand, the paper points out the arguments put forward by those who support and oppose the use of punishment in both homes and schools. The important tips in using punishment, the impacts of punishment on student learning as well as various alternatives to corporal punishment are also examined in this paper. The paper concludes that, corporal punishment should be eliminated because it does not enhance positive student learning instead it brings a lot of negative consequences to both teachers and students.

It explores the attitudes of parents, teachers, and educational leaders about corporal punishment, in the context of existing government policies, laws, and regulations, using interviews, questionnaires and observation. Corporal punishment is widely and frequently used by both parents and teachers as a way of maintaining discipline, with most regarding it favourably as a means of behavioural modification. Furthermore, the book shows that the use of corporal punishment in Tanzania is influenced by cultural norms and religious beliefs, teacher qualifications and parents’ levels of education, past experiences of corporal punishment, and related beliefs about the practice. Crucially, there has not yet been a societal-level legal framework established to protect children from the harms involved.

As a result of school corporal punishment, nearly 200,000 children are paddled in schools each year. Most Americans are unaware of this fact or the physical injuries sustained by countless school children who are hit with objects by school personnel in the name of discipline. Therefore, Corporal Punishment in U.S. Public Schools begins by summarizing the legal basis for school corporal punishment and trends in Americans’ attitudes about it. It then presents trends in the use of school corporal punishment in the United States over time to establish its past and current prevalence. It then discusses what is known about the effects of school corporal punishment on children, though with so little research on this topic, much of the relevant literature is focused on parents’ use of corporal punishment with their children. It also provides results from a policy analysis that examines the effect of state-level school corporal punishment bans on trends in juvenile crime. The main purpose of the study is to find out the different in the attitude of secondary school teachers and students towards corporal punishment. For this study the investigator has taken 100 secondary school teachers and 100 secondary school students from two schools by using simple random technique. For correction of data the investigator has used two scales (one is for teachers and another one is for students) constructed and standardized by himself. For analysis and interpretation of the data used t-test .The main findings of the study show that both teachers and students have unfavorable attitude towards corporal punishment.

As he watched the lesson, he became increasingly uncomfortable. Almost every principle of effective teaching that he had studied for more than 20 years was being violated in that classroom. Yet it was a typical class. The teacher showed how to solve the day's problems, then gave the students a worksheet to do. Some children began to work readily while others shifted uncomfortably in their chairs, or raised their hands for help. The teacher went from desk to desk, giving help and feedback. Skinner knew what was needed. Each student should be given a problem tailored precisely to his or her skill level, not to the class average, and every answer needed to be assessed immediately to determine the next step. The task was clearly impossible for one teacher. That afternoon, Skinner set to work on a teaching machine. Today's computers have made the mechanical machine obsolete, but the principles of how to design instruction in steps that lead from a basic level to competent performance are as valid today as they were in the 20th century. This book brings together Skinner's writings on education during the years he was most involved in improving education.

Book excerpt: Corporal punishment of children is widely accepted and often legally practised in many countries, reflecting a seeming contrast between the rights and status of adults and of children. More countries are now banning corporal punishment in schools, as advocated by the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child in its regular reviews of countries' compliance with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989), the most widely ratified human rights Convention. With difficulty, Tanzania is gradually moving towards the banning of corporal punishment of children in schools. This thesis explores the experiences of discipline and punishment in two urban primary schools in Oar es Salaam, Tanzania. Research methods include ethnographic observations, group sessions and interviews with children, teachers and parents. A critical review of social research methodologies reveals gaps in existing approaches and shows how dialectical critical realism can offer deeper understanding. The analysis aims to understand the ontology of pain, the morality of the corporal punishment of children in relation to human rights. The thesis analyses accounts of childhood and punishment, and the nature of changes and differences in reality that reside in the bodies in pain, in conjunction with reason-emotion and power. Particular concerns are: how critical realist ontology and epistemology can inform understanding of the body in pain; how children's and adults' experiences of pain are given different meanings; and how critical realism helps to justify the possibility of universal human rights intended to protect children from corporal punishment.

Earlier studies had looked at this transitional stage from the schools’ point of view, in the light of institutional aims and objectives. Originally published in 1984, this richly detailed and readable study looks at it from the pupils’ point of view: it illustrates their perceptions of the transfer, their anxieties and their experiences. The book is the result of a research project, in which children transferring from a typical middle school to a typical comprehensive in a Midlands town were observed over a period of eighteen months. The authors reveal various ways in which children adjust to a large, more complex school organisation, to new forms of discipline and authority, and new demands in school work. They emphasise the significance of teenage culture during this period, and identify an important area of interplay between school culture and sub-culture. They pay special attention to gender identities, and the ways in which these affect pupils’ responses to different subjects in the curriculum. Finally, they consider the theoretical and policy implications of their survey, and make positive recommendations for improving school and classroom practice at both primary and secondary level.
