Contrary to expectations, students from minority backgrounds were more likely to report perceiving that they belonged at their university than White students. In Chapter 5, I further explain how the results of the present study allow us to better understand the various ways in which student retention can be promoted.

The developmental process of belonging is interwoven with the social identity development of diverse college students. Moreover, belonging is influenced by the campus environment, relationships, and involvement opportunities as well as a need to master the student role and achieve academic success. Although the construct of sense of belonging is complex and multilayered, a consistent theme across the chapters in this book is that the relationship between sense of belonging and intersectionality of identity cannot be ignored, and must be integrated into any approach to fostering belonging.Over the last 10 years, colleges and universities have started grappling with the notion that their approaches to maintaining and increasing student retention, persistence, and graduation rates were no longer working. As focus shifted to uncovering barriers to student success while concurrently recognizing student success as more than solely academic factors, the term “student sense of belonging” gained traction in both academic and co-curricular settings. The editors noticed the lack of a consistent definition, or an overarching theoretical approach, as well as a struggle to connect disparate research. A compendium of research, applications, and approaches to sense of belonging did not exist, so they brought this book into being to serve as a single point of reference in an emerging and promising field of study.

Book excerpt: This study examines the impact of community service on undergraduate students' intention to graduate. Previous research demonstrates that participation in community service not only assists students in understanding learning outcomes, but also facilitates social and academic integration into the university campus environment. This study illuminates the significant environmental factors of the institution and the various characteristics of students who participated in community service experiences that influenced the students' decision to graduate. The conceptual framework was drawn from Astin's (1983 Input-Environment-Outcome model. The primary data used in this dissertation is from the Multi-Intuitional Study of Leadership at a Doctoral Research institution in the Midwest. The findings provide evidence that students who participated in community service state they intend to graduate from the instiution at slightly higher rates than other students. The main conclusions drawn from this study are participation in community service has positive implications on not only juniors' and seniors' decision to likely graduate, but also first-year students. In addition, community service experiences enhance the faculty and peer interaction, which provides a positive campus environment, a factor also related to a student's intention to graduate. This dissertation recommends that colleges and universities promote the integration of community service experiences into the curriculum to provide a multi-dimensional approach to academic and social integration that encourages the students' likelihood of graduating.

This quantitative study examined how some factors (i.e., academic and social integration, goal and institutional commitment) contribute to a student's intent to persist academically. For the study, a guiding theoretical framework was developed based on Tinto's (1975) theory of student departure and Ajzen's (1991) theory of planned behavior. Utilizing two quantitative, self-reporting survey instruments administered simultaneously, a convenience sample (N = 405) of undergraduate students representing two data collection sites, a regional comprehensive state university and a primarily two-year state college, within the southeast region of the United States, provided data during the Fall 2016 semester.
