Book excerpt: The rapid economic development and growth of the People's Republic of China has accelerated the economic partnership and integration among China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, giving rise to a new Greater China Economy. Since signing the Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement (CEPA) with Hong Kong in 2003, the Chinese central government has been steadily expanding the scope of economic cooperation through a succession of additional and supplementary arrangements. The bilateral economic partnership between China and Hong Kong will only continue to grow further in the coming years as the Chinese government is favorably inclined toward endowing Hong Kong with special trade privileges and status. Moreover, the growing economic partnership between China and Taiwan, spearheaded by the signing and effectuation of the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (EC-FA) between the two countries in the June and September of 2010, respectively, will exert an increasing influence on neighboring countries in Northeast Asia. It is thus high time that we carefully examined and analyzed the implications of the increasing attempts at economic integration in Greater China Economy, especially for the Korean government's trade policy vis-à-vis China, Taiwan and Hong Kong.

A seven-region, seven-sector computable general equilibrium model for world production and trade is developed for this purpose. The simulation results demonstrate that the three Chinese economies would benefit greatly from further integration by means of liberalizing trade policies. The opportunity cost of isolating the United States from East Asia is high for both the US and the three Chinese economies, suggesting that an economically integrated CEA is in the long-term strategic interest of the United States.

Book excerpt: Although China's economy has grown very rapidly in recent decades, there are still very large differences between the economy of mainland China and the economies of Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. For example, per capita income in Hong Kong is many, many times higher than per capita income in mainland China. This book considers the degree to which economic convergence between mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan has occurred, and the prospects for increased convergence in the future. It considers economic integration between China and its two Special Administrative Regions (SARS), emphasising the large volume of capital flows and exports, especially from Hong Kong into China, and showing that the economies are highly integrated, despites their differences. It examines income convergence, and changes in productivity, using the same measures for both China and the two SARS, unlike most existing studies. It explores how economic reforms have been crucial to increasing convergence so far, and will continue to be in the future, and concludes by discussing the implications for policy of encouraging increased convergence.

Since the late 1970s, these three societies have experienced increasing economic integration; however, studies aimed at analyzing and explaining this integration have often overlooked the very important role social institutions have played in the shaping of this process. To fill this gap, this book adopts a systematic institutional approach designed to examine the different patterns of institutions in the three countries and to discuss how such social institutions as the economy, gender, social networks, and the Chinese diaspora have exerted a profound impact on all three societies. The chapters, taken together, argue that different patterns of institutional configuration have led to divergent paths of development, and that this divergence will have significant implications on the prospects for Chinese national reunification in the twenty-first century. The Introductory chapter provides a historical discussion on the origins and the transformation of the Chinese triangle during the second half of the twentieth century.
