Book The Impact of Career Academies on Success Rates of Male Students of Color

Download or read book The Impact of Career Academies on Success Rates of Male Students of Color written by Kelly Anne Walter and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The educational system in the United States (U.S.) is not as competitive as it is in other industrialized nations around the world with regard to the quality or quantity of graduates produced (OECD, 2016). This discrepancy is considered to be a gap between the skill level of workers needed and high school graduates in the U.S. The unprepared workers in this country are also considered to be a burden on the economy. Minority students are especially vulnerable to dropping out of school or failing to achieve their full academic potential, therefore highlighting equity concerns in the design and implementation of the current K-12 public education system. One potential solution for this disconnect is the development of career academies, or schools within schools, in U.S. high schools. This solution could provide students with more individualized, career-focused education. Brick Road High School is one such high school that is attempting to use a career-focused school within a school to address these many concerns. Brick Road High School has both a high poverty and high transient population with a low graduation rate. Research shows that career focused schools have had positive effects in similar populations. This research project uses an action research process. Through a number of qualitative and quantitative data sources three research questions were analyzed and produced positive results for career academies' impact on Black and Hispanic males' academic achievement.

Book Field of Dreams

Download or read book Field of Dreams written by Traci Danielle Davis and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many elementary and secondary teachers across the United States have shared and heard stories about their African American male students overwhelmingly dreaming of futures filled with the fame and fortune offered by careers in professional athletics and entertainment. While these are honorable careers that students understandably find attractive, some teachers are routinely perplexed by the overwhelming number of young men who profess an interest and the apparent disengagement these particular goals seem to create between the young men and the larger curriculum of school. Perhaps this would not be of such great concern if the academic achievement data for African American male students was not so dire. The national graduation rate of African American male students has been persistently lower than European American male students or their African American female counterparts. This trend can be seen at the state and national level. In their 2010 report, "Diplomas Count 2010: Graduation by the Numbers", Education Weekly reported that the 2007 national graduation rate was 69%. The national graduation rate for African American students was 54% compared to 77% for European American students. The Schott Foundation (2010) reports more detailed information about black male students. In their Equity Index they show that in the state of Ohio where this study was conducted the graduation rate for African American males is 49% compared to 79% for European American male students. This study explores whether African American males are aspiring to careers in sports and entertainment at a higher rate than their European American counterparts and whether those career aspirations are related to their engagement in school. All freshmen males at two urban high school in a mid-sized Midwestern city were asked to complete a questionnaire about career aspirations. There were 137 freshmen at both high schools who completed the questionnaire. While the results of the study were mixed, there was partial support for the hypothesis that African American male students aspired in greater proportions to careers in sports and entertainment. There was no support for the hypothesis of a relationship of career aspirations with school engagement.

Download or read book What Success Looks Like written by Marck Abraham and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-07-14 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black males have the lowest graduation rates of any population in the country, graduating from high school at the rate of just 59%. They are suspended and referred to special education classes at rates three times higher than any other population. They make up just 6% of the US population yet account for nearly a third of the American prison population. The graduation gap between White and Black males is currently 21% and growing. Research has shown that costly federal, state, and local programs have failed to solve this crisis. This book details the 10-step method I developed and deployed in the Buffalo (New York) high school of which I was principal, which has raised the four-year graduation rate for Black males to 93% and the five-year rate to 90%. My program has been deployed throughout New York State and I am now advising schools nationally, helping them to deploy proven strategies that will guarantee the academic success of Black males. This is a one-of-a-kind book with powerful strategies secondary and middle school principals can use to transform their entire school. The strategies in this book are what every successful principal needs to run a high performing school. This book answers the age-old question: “Can principals truly make a difference and turn their school around?” The answer is yes, they can! This book will show them how.

Through rigorous empirical and theoretical engagement, chapters identify culturally responsive strategies for supporting students as they navigate formal and informal educational opportunities and overcome intersectional barriers to success. In particular, chapters highlight how these approaches can be nurtured through teacher education, effective educational leadership, and engagement across the wider community. Book Student Success and Geography

Download or read book Student Success and Geography written by LaMarcus D. Howard and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to analyze the relationship between academic and nonacademic determinants of academic achievement and persistence and to identify how university geographic location influences the likelihood of Black male persistence. Quantitative data was drawn from the 2012/14 Beginning Postsecondary Students (BPS) Longitudinal Study (BPS: 12/14) conducted by the U.S. Department of Education National Center for Educational Statistics (NCES)to explore third-year academic achievement and persistence for Black males. This study identified two research questions, guided by the theoretical frameworks of Tinto’s student institutional departure model and Astin’s Input-Environment-Outputmodel to assess Black male decisions to stay or leave college. Descriptive statistics were used to calculate the means and percentages for all independent and dependent variables included in this analysis. Additionally, a multiple regression was used to predict the relationship between academic and non-academic determinants of academic achievement for Black males. Furthermore, a binomial logistic regression was used to predict the probability that university geographic location influences the likelihood of Black male persistence. The findings from this study indicated that when controlling for academic achievement (third-year), high school GPA had a positive effect on Black male third-year persistence, while financial aid (federal and private student loans) had a negative effect on Black male GPA their third year of college. Additionally, this study indicated that geographic location did not influence the likelihood of third-year persistence. In fact, the findings in this study demonstrated that having a job on campus during the first year of college positively influenced Black male third-year persistence.

Book The Impact of Student Engagement on African American Male Students Experiences at Community Colleges Leading Towards Educational Attainment

Download or read book The Impact of Student Engagement on African American Male Students Experiences at Community Colleges Leading Towards Educational Attainment written by Kyle Turman and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although African Americans continue to prove a desire for education, African American male enrollment and completion rates in higher education are substantially lower than other ethnic groups (Palmer & Maramba, 2011). This research intends to establish whether or not student involvement in educationally purposeful experiences among African American men leads to educational advancement in academic and non-academic domains. This study will evaluate differences in student engagement level based on the following variables: academic classification, self-reported grades, opinions about the college, and the number of hours students work within a week. Additionally, this research offers strategies and activities that encourage African American male persistence at community colleges. In review of the literature on Men of Color (MOC) in postsecondary education, more needs to be known about African Americans and how their involvement in various domains of college life impact persistence (Harris & Wood, 2013). Therefore, more in-depth studies need to examine the hindering factors of African American males attending community colleges' educational attainment. Thus, this study found that the levels of engagement of African American males in practical collegiate experiences in community colleges and the extent of their involvement lead to certain educational gains.

Book The Impact of Structural Supports on the Success of Students of Color in the K 16 Educational System

Download or read book The Impact of Structural Supports on the Success of Students of Color in the K 16 Educational System written by Sherry K. Holmes and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collective dissertation contains the efforts of two practitioners in the field of education who possess a shared vision for designing student experiences with the mission of preparing all students for success in secondary and post-secondary education. The researchers believed that by creating structural supports for students in underserved populations, these same students will increase their educational attainment and access to long-term career opportunities. With successful completion of postsecondary education and with increased career opportunities, students can improve their lives, their families’ lives and the lives of members of their community. Many students struggled on their educational journeys from elementary, middle, high school, and throughout college. Those most affected were derived from communities that were traditionally marginalized by the American education system, including many African-American students living in poverty and first-generation college students. The researchers believed that attention should be given to building supports that address the social, academic, and financial needs of students which are necessary for students to achieve academic mastery and post-secondary educational attainment. Without strategies to support students in building new skills, nurturing their talents, and maneuvering life’s challenges, many were unable to reach these goals. The researchers sought to find solutions to inequities experienced by underrepresented groups in the educational system by investigating the impact of interventions at two key, transition times in students’ educational experiences. The first study examined the transition to middle school with a focus on mathematics, and the second study addressed the transition to a four-year university, with attention paid to technology and efforts of increasing community cohesion. The proposed studies will explore barriers faced by students from low-income backgrounds within educational settings. The studies are uniquely connected because they will examine barriers faced by marginalized groups in education and will offer solutions to remove these barriers. This co-authored dissertation offered a unifying framework in which academic and social support practices were closely associated with an increase in academic achievement and educational attainment. Although each study within the dissertation was anchored in its own axiom of the continuum, that was the continuum of educational equity in the kindergarten through high school sector. Though the points of interest represented a diverse cluster of perspectives, experiences, and communities, a single thread connected both studies: Each study investigates the impact of Structural Supports on the Success of Students of Color in the K-16 Educational System. By implementing and examining targeted Structural Supports, the researchers found these efforts to have a significant, positive impact on outcomes at both the middle school and post-secondary level. Through the studies, researchers saw an increase in sense of agency, self-efficacy, advocacy, and grit amongst marginalized students.
