Book The Impact of a Social Emotional Learning Program on Middle School Student Behaviors and Perceptions of School Climate

Download or read book The Impact of a Social Emotional Learning Program on Middle School Student Behaviors and Perceptions of School Climate written by LaDonna Braswell and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study aimed to analyze the impact a social-emotional learning program had on middle school behavior and stakeholder perception. An SEL program was implemented at a middle school as an intervention program to strengthen self-awareness, self-management, responsible decision-making, social awareness, and relationship-building. SEL programs provide coping strategies to all students, especially those that have experienced trauma. The participants in this study were sixth, seventh, and eighth-grade students from an inner-city middle school in Tennessee. The participants completed a pretest before implementing Second Step's social-emotional learning program. The treatment school implemented the SEL program weekly for ten weeks. The researcher compared the pretest and posttest scores using the Tennessee State Climate Survey for students and staff to analyze the results.

Book Social Emotional Learning in Middle School

Download or read book Social Emotional Learning in Middle School written by Jeffrey A. Rosen and published by RTI Press. This book was released on 2022-07-14 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This article focuses attention on a critical need for more evidence-based social emotional learning (SEL) programs for middle school students. First, we explore the definition of SEL, pointing out how it has evolved as our world has changed. We review key SEL domains and skills and describe universal school-based SEL programming as one approach to fostering students’ SEL competencies. We highlight the ongoing need for evidence-based middle school SEL programs by demonstrating how few programs meet the rigorous What Works Clearinghouse (WWC), Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL), and Blueprints standards for evidence. We extend our summary of these programs by noting that even when positive effects have been demonstrated, these effects were often observed in a single domain, such as substance use, or outnumbered by null effects, which undermines efforts to understand program effectiveness. We conclude by considering the unique developmental needs of early adolescents and providing recommendations for the development or refinement of SEL programs that target middle school students

Book Longitudinal Effects of School Climate on Middle school Students Academic Social emotional and Behavioral Outcomes

Download or read book Longitudinal Effects of School Climate on Middle school Students Academic Social emotional and Behavioral Outcomes written by Jennifer L. Engelland-Schultz and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Millions of youth are at risk for low academic achievement, school dropout, risky behavior, bullying, and mental health concerns, especially those living in rural areas. Protective factors can reduce the likelihood of children and adolescents experiencing these negative outcomes. Research shows that positive school climate is a powerful protective factor for youth. The present study investigated the longitudinal relations between middle school students' school climate perceptions and their academic, social-emotional, and behavioral development over two years. Specifically, 510 students in grades 5-9 from six rural schools rated their support and influence at school as well as their internalizing problems, personal adjustment, and risky behavior. Students' academic performance was progress monitored using reading and math curriculum-based measures. Data were examined using Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM). Results revealed significant relations between students' perceived school climate and their social-emotional, behavioral, and mathematics outcomes over time. Further, school climate was a predictor of students' future involvement in risky behavior. There was a slight negative trend in students' perceived school climate as well as increases in their social-emotional problems and risky behavior, which suggests the need to implement evidence-based school climate improvement strategies aligned to students' developmental levels. Findings indicate the importance of incorporating school climate assessment and improvement strategies in school practices and policies to enhance student outcomes and school contexts. Limitations and future directions for research are discussed based on results from the present study and the school climate literature. Overall, school climate significantly influences outcomes for youth.

Book Social and Emotional Learning in Out Of School Time

Download or read book Social and Emotional Learning in Out Of School Time written by Elizabeth Devaney and published by IAP. This book was released on 2018-09-01 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume focuses on social and emotional learning (SEL) from a variety of perspectives. The goal of the volume is to offer a clear framing of SEL in relation to other related out-of-school time concepts and initiatives. SEL has gained popularity as a concept in recent years and there remains confusion as well as great interest in the meaning and implementation of SEL in OST. Policymakers, researchers, and practitioners are pursuing work related to SEL in OST and this volume offers an opportunity to share that work by: • Defining and explaining SEL in a variety of out of school contexts and highlighting opportunities for integration and alignment with other fields (e.g., formal education) • Clarifying the language and framework confusion and honoring the field’s foundation in thinking about social and emotional development through high quality youth development practice • Sharing information about current trends and new developments and how that work is shaping the field across the developmental continuum • Making the research to practice connection by including in each chapter foundational research on the topic, evidence of effective efforts, and practical implications • Offering recommendations for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers related to SEL in OST settings ENDORSEMENTS "The social and emotional development of our nation's youth is a common, essential concern of those working in school and out of school. This volume will be the catalyst for long overdue conversation, collaboration, and synergy. It is essential reading for practitioners, researchers, and policy makers in both contexts who are concerned with preparing children for the tests of life, and not a life of tests." ~ Maurice J. Elias, Ph.D., Rutgers University, Co-director, Academy for Social-Emotional Learning in Schools and After School Settings "Having spent all of my adult life working with, and advocating for, high-quality youth programming, I understand the critical role out-of-school-time (OST) programs play in the social and emotional development of young people. As the Executive Director of the New York State Network for Youth Success, I am thrilled to see such a comprehensive view of current best practices and research on social-emotional learning (SEL) in OST programs. It is exciting and encouraging to see so much documented progress with SEL in OST condensed into one comprehensive book that furthers understanding of both research-informed practices and systems building around policy. This book, edited by two leading researchers in the field, Elizabeth Devaney and Deborah Moroney, should be required reading for any practitioners, policy makers, and educators in the field. Both the editors' and contributors' emphasis on making SEL an "intentional practice" is the exact conversation we all should be having right now." ~ Kelly Malone Sturgis, Executive Director, New York State Network for Youth Success "Social Emotional Learning and Out-Of-School-Time: Foundations and Futures is an extremely important and timely publication. The scope and depth of this work makes it a must read for any serious out-of-school-time or K-12 educator. In 2014 California identified social emotional learning as the most promising bridge to bring coherence between expanded learning programs and the school day. (A Vision for Expanded Learning in California – Strategic Plan 2014-2016) I have found this to be the exact case. All across California, school day and out-of-school-time professionals are having deep and authentic conversations about youth centered collaborative efforts. We also know that providing social emotional development opportunities is a corner stone for any high quality out-of-school-time program. I plan to share this publication widely with K-12 educators, policy makers, parents and so many others." ~ Michael Funk, Director, Expanded Learning Division, California Department of Education Book reviews: Journal of Youth Development: Book Review—Social and Emotional Learning in Out-of-School-Time: Foundations and Futures Youth Today: Outstanding Insights About SEL in OST in Major Book

Book Aligning Social Emotional and 21st Century Learning in the Classroom Emerging Research and Opportunities

Download or read book Aligning Social Emotional and 21st Century Learning in the Classroom Emerging Research and Opportunities written by Pincham, Linda B. and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2021-06-25 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Establishing a student-centered classroom environment where learning puts students’ interests first is essential for middle school students to learn and thrive. Student success does not simply rely on instruction; it relies on external factors such as school and classroom climate, positive relationships with their teachers and other adults, and a strong sense of belonging with their peers. The young adolescent learner is at a turning point where the need for love, belonging, and acceptance is heightened. Research studies indicate that large percentages of students lack social-emotional competence and believe their teachers do not care about them. Social-emotional learning skills are vital for young adolescents, as are 21st century skills and competencies to prepare them for an information- and technology-driven world. Aligning Social-Emotional and 21st Century Learning in the Classroom: Emerging Research and Opportunities shows teachers practical ways to combine the skills that young adolescents need (social-emotional) and the 21st century skills that they learn to create a culture of success in their middle school classrooms. This book also provides examples of education technologies that teachers can use to promote 21st century learning in their classroom. Highlighting a wide range of topics such as communication skills, critical thinking, social media, and emotional intelligence, this book is crucial for teachers, school administrators, instructional designers, K-12 educators, curriculum developers, academicians, researchers, and students.

Book Students with Emotional and Behavioral Disorder

Download or read book Students with Emotional and Behavioral Disorder written by Isabel Mitchem and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current research has shown that social and emotional learning (SEL) programs improve the school climate, school culture, and the overall academic success of students. It is imperative that administrators collaborate with their staff to find effective programs that address the needs of every student; this includes both their academic needs, as well as their social and emotional needs. This research study examined teacher and administrative insights of social and emotional learning, and the impact of such a program in today's schools. The questions guiding this research study were: How would a social and emotional learning program, when implemented with fidelity, affect students who qualify for special education services under emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD)? and What are the effects of a placement in a self-contained classroom on students with emotional and behavioral disorders? A mixed methods approach using a survey and semi-structured interviews relating to SEL allowed the researcher to gather data on staff perceptions about SEL programs, and the effectiveness of such a program on the success of all students. The data also allowed the researcher to examine the educational setting of students with EBD, and what these students need be successful. The researcher found that, while teachers believe social and emotional learning is vital to student success, implementation with fidelity does not occur at the site in which the study took place. This inconsistency in teaching social and emotional skills can drastically impede the effectiveness of such a program, and a recommendation would be to implement a social and emotional learning program with the understanding that the entire school site must implement with fidelity. The information gathered in this study will add to current research on the topic of social and emotional learning. Key Words: social and emotional learning (SEL), emotional and behavioral disorder (EBD), fidelity, general education setting, self-contained setting, interventions

Book Middle School Principals Perspective on the Impact of the Social Emotional Programs in Their Respective Schools

Download or read book Middle School Principals Perspective on the Impact of the Social Emotional Programs in Their Respective Schools written by LaWrence Burroughs and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Principals' ideas and attitudes about social emotional learning (SEL) can impact the success or failure of the implementation of school-based social emotional learning interventions. The student population in schools today have become more diverse and engaging students in learning can be challenging when their social emotional needs are not met. It is now the responsibility of schools to provide students with the social and emotional support needed to be successful in school. The purpose of the phenomenological qualitative study was to examine middle school principals' perspectives on the implementation and impact of social emotional programs and interventions in their respective schools. The earliest SEL studies looked at the immediate impact of SEL programs. More recently, researchers have looked at the long-term effects of SEL programs (student academic success and preparing students to be successful citizens in a global society). Findings from this study may provide school leaders with data that will assist in their decision-making process as it relates to the implementation of a social emotional learning program and its impact on students' social emotional competencies and academic achievement. The target population chosen for this study was middle school principals. These participants were located in the Northeastern Region of the United States. The instrumentation used for the study was a one-on-one interview protocol with each principal. The interview protocol contained four sections 1) collection of biographical data 2) clarification of the interview protocol and confidentiality of the process 3) clarification of the purpose of the study 4) description of how the collected data will be used. The collected data that emanated from the recorded interview responses were transcribed using TEMI. Before the research began, IRB approval was received. Then a letter was sent to potential participants via email explaining the purpose of the study and providing a consent form for those agreeing to participate in the study. The interviews were conducted using Zoom or a Google Meet virtual platform and were audio recorded. One finding indicated all of the participants felt the need to meet the mental health needs of their students through the implementation of social emotional support for students. Additionally most respondents found students benefited from the SEL program demonstrating improved behavior, attitudes, SEL skills, and academics. Additionally, all participants created a proactive approach to SEL support by implementing school-wide programs. An additional finding found all of the participants use various forms of school data to support their decisionmaking about the implemented program. Lastly, one additional finding found participants created teams to participate in the decision-making process for the implemented program. The researcher concluded that school leaders have a desire to provide students with the skills and strategies in social emotional competence to be successful in school. These leaders create a climate of shared-leadership, share responsibility, and decision-making by creating planning teams that meet regularly to make decisions about the various aspects of the implementation of their SEL program using school data to support these decisions. Furthermore, recommendations for policy, practice and future study are presented
